Book excerpt: Finding a promising material and constructing a new method to have both high energy and power are key issues for future energy storage systems. This dissertation addresses three different materials systems to resolve those issues. Pseudocapacitive materials such as RuO2 and MnO2 display high capacitance but Nb2O5, displays a different charge storage mechanism, one highly dependent on its crystal phase rather than its surface area. Various sol-gel techniques were used to synthesize the different phases of Nb2O5 and electrochemical testing was used to study their charge storage with some phases displaying comparable charge storage to MnO2. To overcome the electrical limitations of using an insulating material, the core-shell structure (Nb2O5/C) was also examined and the method could be generalized to improve other pseudocapacitors. Besides electronic conductivity, the diffusion of the electrolyte ions through the shell material is a critical factor for fast charging/discharging in the core-shell structure. This dissertation also involves another topic, a reconfigurable electrode, that displays both high energy and power density. By constructing a reconfigurable electrode which has different electrical properties (metallic or insulating state) depending on the amount of intercalated `guest' ions into `host' material, it can be used as a battery or electrochemical capacitor material in the insulating or metallic state respectively. Metal oxide bronzes having metal-insulator transition were investigated in this study.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performances of current electrical energy storage systems (both batteries and electrochemical capacitors) are not capable of meeting the ever-increasing demands of emerging technologies. This is because batteries often suffer from slow power delivery, limited life-time, and long charging time whereas electrochemical capacitors suffer from low energy density. While extensive efforts have been made to the development of novel electrode materials, progress has been hindered by the lack of a profound understanding on the complex charge storage mechanism. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to develop novel electrode materials which can exhibit both high energy and power density with prolonged life-time and to gain a fundamental understanding of their charge storage mechanism. \r : \r : First, nanostructured, thin, and conformal coatings of transition metal oxides have been deposited onto three-dimensional porous substrates of current collectors to form composite electrodes. The structures and compositions of the oxide coatings are further altered by a controlled annealing process and characterized by electron microscopy and spectroscopy, laboratory X-ray diffraction, gas adsorption analysis, and in-situ and ex-situ synchrotron-enabled X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy. The structural features have also been correlated with the electrochemical behavior of the transition metal oxides as an electrode in an electrochemical capacitor. It is found that the electrochemical performance of the composite electrodes depends sensitively on the composition, nanostructure, and morphology of the oxide coatings. When optimized, the electrodes displayed the highest energy and power density with excellent cycling life among all materials reported for electrochemical capacitors. Finally, new charge storage mechanisms have also been proposed for the novel electrode materials based on insights gained from in-situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials for energy storage have become increasingly important in the modern world as alternatives to petrochemical energy sources. Although technology such as lithium-ion batteries and solid oxide fuel cells are in commercial use, improvements must still be made to increase widespread adoption. To this end, nanostructured materials have emerged as potentially impactful solutions, as they can greatly improve the performance of the energy storage device. One goal of this dissertation was to fabricate nanostructured materials through solution-based processing, electrospinning, and controlled annealing for lithium-ion battery electrodes. This project resulted in the formation of porous fibers from inexpensive, nontoxic materials that can be used as high capacity electrodes. Another component of this dissertation was to deposit thin film noble metals and metal oxides via sputtering for metal-air battery cathodes. The results from these experiments indicate that nanostructured thin films could have improved catalytic activity compared to polycrystalline bulk structures, and also were lower cost due to the decrease in material used. The other major portion of this dissertation was to study the fundamental behavior of nanostructured materials for energy storage at a localized level using electrochemical strain microscopy, a technique that is still in its infancy. The measured responses using electrochemical strain microscopy tended to be difficult to interpret, as they contained many different chemical and mechanical contributions. A series of experiments were devised to distinguish among the different mechanisms, comparing differing responses from Vegard strain, ferroelectric behavior, and electrostrictive effects. Given this framework, inhomogeneous lithium iron phosphate was characterized using electrochemical strain microscopy. From these results, it was found that nanocrystalline particles had higher lithium ion diffusivity as compared to microcrystalline particles, which correlates with macroscopic electrochemical performance. Furthermore, this technique could be applied to measure local lithium ion concentration in samples at different states of charge. Electrochemical strain microscopy was also applied to study samarium doped ceria, a solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte. In this case, the measured behavior was found to be due to the motion of small polarons, supporting the space-charge model of mixed ionic and electronic conductivity in nanostructured electrolytes. Electrochemical strain microscopy was found to be a strong and versatile technique that can fundamentally characterize local behavior of ions, vacancies, electrons, and holes in an energy storage material, and can guide future research in this area.
