This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bulk yttrium oxysulfide phosphors were prepared using the polysulfide flux method. The morphology and structure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray powdered diffraction. Visible emissions occurring near 530 and 550 nm and 660 - 670 nm consistent with the 2H11/2, 4S3/2 --> 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 --> 4I15/2 transitions, respectively, were observed under 808, 980, and 1560 nm excitation. The upconverting mechanisms excited at 808, 980, and 1560 nm have been investigated in detail. The power dependent behavior of the upconverted emission intensities for singly doped erbium phosphors excited at 808 and 980 nm indicated a two-photon excitation process. Likewise, the ytterbium and erbium co-doped phosphors excited at 980 nm also indicated a two-photon excitation process. Doping with 10% erbium showed the most intense emissions under 808 and 1560 nm excitation. Yttrium oxysulfide co-doped with 15% ytterbium and 3% erbium showed the most intense emissions under 980 nm excitation. Upon 1560 nm excitation, the intensity of the red emission band was significantly enhanced by co-doping erbium with ytterbium. Concentration quenching became apparent when either the concentration of erbium or ytterbium reached 20%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolph Mossbauer discovered the phenomenon of recoil-free nuclear resonance fluorescence in 1957-58 and the first indications of hyperfine interactions in a chemical compound were obtained by Kistner and Sunyar in 1960. From these beginnings the technique of Mossbauer spectroscopy rapidly emerged and the astonishing versatility of this new technique soon led to its extensive application to a wide variety of chemical and solid-state problems. This book reviews the results obtained by Mossbauer spectroscopy during the past ten years in the belief that this will provide a firm basis for the continued development and application of the technique to new problems in the future. It has been our aim to write a unified and consistent treatment which firstly presents the basic principles underlying the phenomena involved, then outlines the experimental techniques used, and finally summarises the wealth of experimental and theoretical results which have been obtained. We have tried to give some feeling for the physical basis of the Mossbauer effect with out extensive use of mathematical formalism, and some appreciation of the experimental methods employed without embarking on a detailed discussion of electronics and instrumentation. However, full references to the original literature are provided and particular points can readily be pursued in more detail if required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins by giving a summary of sonochemistry and explains how a chemical reaction can be induced by the interaction of sound waves and gas bubbles in liquids. The work outlines how primary and secondary radicals combined with the physical effects generated during acoustic cavitation are active in the ultrasonic synthesis of a variety of functional materials. The brief covers hot topics that include ultrasonic synthesis of various functional materials covering the following broad areas: acoustic cavitation and sonochemistry, synthesis of functional polymers and their applications, synthesis of functional inorganic materials and their applications, improving functionality of food/dairy systems, synthesis of functional biomaterials and their applications, synthesis of graphene based catalytic materials. Theory is kept to a minimum. The book is aimed at individuals at universities and will also interest those in industry. It is suitable for all levels.

This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, inedible lignocellulosic biomasses have attracted significant attention for being abundant resources that are not in competition with agricultural land or food production and, therefore, can be used as starting renewable material for the production of a wide variety of platform chemicals. The three main components of lignocellulosic biomasses are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, complex biopolymers that can be converted into a pool of platform molecules including sugars, polyols, alchols, ketons, ethers, acids and aromatics. Various technologies have been explored for their one-pot conversion into chemicals, fuels and materials. However, in order to develop new catalytic processes for the selective production of desired products, a complete understanding of the molecular aspects of the basic chemistry and reactivity of biomass derived molecules is still crucial. This Special Issue reports on recent progress and advances in the catalytic valorization of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin model molecules promoted by novel heterogeneous systems for the production of energy, fuels and chemicals.
