This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an investigation into the synthesis, properties and application of a series of transition metal complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. There were four main areas of focus: the synthesis of alkoxy functionalised benzimidazolium salts and the assessment of their electron-donating abilities; the synthesis of transition metal complexes bearing electron-rich N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, and an investigation of their properties; an investigation into the catalytic activity of the palladium and rhodium complexes; and a preliminary study into the possibility of immobilising a palladium- NHC complex onto silica gel for use as a solid-supported heterogeneous catalyst. Various butoxy-functionalised benzimidazolium salts, including mono- (benzimidazolium) salts, bis(benzimidazolium) salts and benzimidazolium cyclophanes were prepared as precursors to electron rich NHC-metal complexes. Preparation of the (NHC)RhI(CO)2 complexes I - III and subsequent analysis by IR spectroscopy confirmed the increased electron richness of the butoxy-functionalised NHCs compared to the non-butoxy-functionalised analogues. Some of the benzimidazolium salts were used to prepare Ag(I)-NHC complexes for the purpose of transmetallation agents. Treatment of the Ag(I)-NHC complex IV with [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 yielded the dinuclear cationic Ru(II)-NHC complex V, which exhibits !2-binding of the quaternary carbons of each xylyl ring to the Ru centre. This unique complex was also converted to the hexafluorophosphate complex in excellent yields. A range of Pd(II)-NHC complexes were synthesized. The complexes possessed mono(NHC), chelating bis(NHC) (bridged on one or both sides), and mixed NHC/ancillary ligand systems, in order to assess the most favourable structural characteristics of a potential catalyst. Reaction of the bis(benzimidazolium) salt VI with Pd(OAc)2 gave two complexes, VII and VIII, which were subsequently isolated. The unusual complex VII, in which the xylyl ring is folded under the metal centre, was found to isomerise to IX over approximately twenty-six days in CDCl3. The conformations of the xylyl ring in VII and IX was confirmed using selective NOESY experiments. Two trans-o-xylyl-linked Pd(II)-NHC complexes were prepared and characterised, and represent the only fully characterised complexes of this type. During efforts to synthesize the dinitrophenyl-functionalised bis(NHC)-Pd(II) complex X under strict anhydrous and anaerobic conditions, instead, the trinuclear Abstract v palladium complex XI was isolated, where one dinitrophenyl group of each ligand has been displaced, presumably by attack from adventitious water or acetate present in the reaction mixture. Pd N N N N Br. Many of the Pd(II)-NHC complexes were tested in an extensive set of experiments designed to provide an insight into favourable structural motifs for a potential catalyst and confirm the beneficial nature of the electron donating butoxy groups. It was found that the Pd(II)-NHC complexes possessing chelating bis(NHC) ligands were the most active in the Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, possibly due to the robustness of these complexes at the temperatures necessary to promote the reactions. Gratifyingly, the complexes possessing butoxy groups were found to be more active than the non-butoxy-functionalised analogues.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was the synthesis of N,N'-diphosphanyl-functionalized NHC ligands andtheir coordination chemistry. The novel stable and rigid tridentate N,N'-diphosphanyl-imidazol-2-ylidene was synthesized and experimental and computational information on its stability weregained. It served as a unique platform for the synthesis of novel mono-, di-, tri-, penta-, hexanuclear complexes with the coinage metals (Cu, Ag and Au), exhibiting rare structural features. The mono- and dinuclear complexes with one or two dangling P-donors provided rational access to heterotrinuclear complexes. All these coinage metal complexes have short metal-metalseparations, indicating the presence of d10-d10 interactions, and display excellent luminescentproperties. Partial or complete transmetallation of the homotrinuclear Cu or Ag complexes withPd(0) precursors led to hetero-trinuclear complexes with d10-d10 interactions. In addition to itsbridging behavior, this ligand also showed its chelating behavior in Pd or Cr(III) complexes. Thelatter displayed superior performance in ethylene oligomerization than the Cr(II) complexes andgave mostly oligomers.

Book excerpt: Design of new processes that avoid the use of toxic reagents has been the focus of intense research of late. Catalysis by metals and non-metals offers diverse opportunities for the development of new organic reactions with promising range of selectivities—chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, diastereoselectivity, and enantioselectivity. Furthermore, these transformations frequently occur under mild conditions, tolerate a broad array of functional groups, and proceed with high stereoselectivity. The area of catalysis is sometimes referred to as a ‘foundational pillar’ of green chemistry. Catalytic reactions often reduce energy requirements and decrease separations because of increased selectivity; they are also capable of permitting the use of renewable feedstocks of less toxic reagents or minimizing the quantities of reagents needed. New catalytic organic synthesis methodologies have, thus, offered several possibilities for considerable improvement in the eco-compatibility of fine chemical production. Hence, these catalytic methodologies have emerged as powerful tools for the efficient and chemoselective synthesis of heterocyclic molecules. Key Features: Presents the synthesis of different five-membered heterocycles. Contains the most up-to-date information in this fast-moving field. Covers novel catalytic approaches used in the study and application of catalysts in synthetic organic reactions. Presents new methodologies for the synthesis of heterocycles.

Book excerpt: Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis is a comprehensive reference that not only synthesizes the current literature but also offers practical protocols that industrial and academic scientists can immediately put to use in their daily work. Increasing interest in green chemistry has led to the development of numerous environmentally-friendly methodologies for the synthesis of organic molecules of interest. Amongst the green methodologies drawing attention, mechanochemistry is emerging as a promising method to circumvent the use of toxic solvents and reagents as well as to increase energy efficiency. The development of synthetic strategies that require less, or the minimal, amount of energy to carry out a specific reaction with optimum productivity is of vital importance for large-scale industrial production. Experimental procedures at room temperature are the mildest reaction conditions (essentially required for many temperature-sensitive organic substrates as a key step in multi-step sequence reactions) and are the core of mechanochemical organic synthesis. This green synthetic method is now emerging in a very progressive manner and until now, there is no book that reviews the recent developments in this area. Features cutting-edge research in the field of mechanochemical organic synthesis for more sustainable reactions Integrates advances in green chemistry research into industrial applications and process development Focuses on designing techniques in organic synthesis directed toward mild reaction conditions Includes global coverage of mechanochemical synthetic protocols for the generation of organic compounds

Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years aqueous organometallic catalysis has found applications in small- scale organic synthesis in the laboratory, as well as in the industrial production of chemicals with a combined output close to one million tons per year. Aqueous/organic two-phase reactions allow easy product-catalyst separation and full catalyst recovery which mean clear benefits not only in economic but also in environmental and green chemistry contexts. Instead of putting together a series of expert reviews of specialized fields, this book attempts to give a comprehensive yet comprehensible description of the various catalytic transformations in aqueous systems as seen by an author who has been working on aqueous organometallic catalysis since its origin. Emphasis is put on the discussion of differences between related non-aqueous and aqueous processes due to the presence of water. The book will be of interest to experts and students working in catalysis, inorganic chemistry or organic synthesis, and may serve as a basis for advanced courses.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-coupling, which relies on the use of transition metals, is among the most utilized chemical means of establishing carbon-carbon or carbon-heteteroatom bonds between appropriately functionalized sp, sp2, or sp3 centres. However, most cross-coupling reactions rely on the use of palladium to synthesize valuable synthetic targets. This is problematic for the chemical industry as palladium is limited in supply and expensive. Chemists have therefore sought to replace palladium with first-row transition metals (e.g., iron, cobalt and nickel) and recent reports on cobalt and nickel catalyzed cross-coupling reactions indicate that these metals can be used in this capacity. Unfortunately, protocols developed (so far) for these metals are unsuitable for the synthesis of targets with base-sensitive functional groups as they involve strongly basic reaction conditions. Research in this thesis aims to develop both cobalt and nickel pre-formed catalysts that will display high catalytic activity in mildly basic reaction conditions. Current methodologies for cobalt and nickel cross-coupling reactions use either phosphine ligands or NHC ligands of moderate steric bulk (IMes or IPr). Recent advancements in the development of Pd-PEPPSI catalysts have demonstrated that both pre-forming the catalyst and using larger NHC ligands (IPent, IPentCl, or IHept) are required for high catalytic activity in weakly basic conditions. Thus, it was hypothesized that the development of pre-formed cobalt and nickel NHC complexes analogous to their Pd counterparts would improve reactivity in Negishi, Suzuki-Miyaura, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination cross-coupling reactions. Co(IPent)Cl2(Pyr), Co(IPentCl)Cl2(Pyr), and Co2IPr2(OAc)4 were prepared, identified by X-ray crystallography, and evaluated in preliminary Negishi cross-coupling reactions. These complexes were found to be ineffective, but Co2IPr2(OAc)4 was found to be effective for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. A base screen was performed to enable the use of weak bases, however, the reaction only worked by pre-forming the boronate with n-BuLi, rendering the reaction conditions intolerant of base-sensitive functional groups. [Ni(IPr)]2(μ-Cl)2 , Ni(IPr)Cl(allyl), and Ni(IPent)Cl(allyl) complexes were synthesized and evaluated in Buchwald-Hartwig aminations. Several bases were examined for these reactions but only sodium tert-butoxide was found to be effective. The presence of TEMPO and BHT in these transformations proved deleterious suggesting the involvement of radical intermediates. Finally, stoichiometric reactions were performed to isolate intermediates in the catalytic cycle, supporting the formation of nickel(0).

Book excerpt: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have played a dominant role in organometallic chemistry for decades and revolutionized the field of homogenous catalysis. NHCs have been thoroughly studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and have shown unique reactivity towards transition metals, chalcogens, azides and pnictogens. This thesis is aimed at utilizing the unique reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbenes to develop novel, robust catalysts to mediate organic transformations. The multi-faceted work within this thesis explores the use of NHCs as ancillary ligands on early and late transition metals as potential catalysts for olefin polymerization and ring-closing metathesis, respectively. This work also includes exploring the synthesis and coordination of ancillary ligands derived from the unique reactivity of NHCs towards azides, chalcogens and pnictinidenes. The reactivity of a novel aryl-substituted acyclic imino-N-heterocyclic carbene to early transition metals, cyclooctasulfur and Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes was explored. The reactivity of imidazol-2-imide towards Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes and the synthesis and coordination of a novel group of ligands bearing an imidazol-2-imine scaffold were also explored. Lastly, this work will include the reactivity of IMes=PPh to Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes.
