Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal chalcogenides is a large family of functional materials with rich physical and chemical properties depending on their compositions, dimensions and phases. They have a broad range of applications in electronics, optoelectronics and energy conversion/ storage. The possibility to prepare these materials into low-dimensional nanostructures may allow the access to novel properties that are absent in their bulk counterparts. Such a development, however, requires a reliable approach to controllably synthesize chalcogenides into nanostructures. Here, we primarily employ a horizontal tube furnace reactor to grow such chalcogenide nanomaterials. These nanostructures serve as a material platform to expand the applications of this family of materials towards new areas. We first describe the opportunity to study topological insulator electronic properties in several chalcogenide materials. Topological insulators are narrow-gap semiconductors with metallic electronic states that are always present at their surfaces. The unique property associated with such surface carrier is that the spin direction is determined by its moving direction. The unusual spin texture gives rise to many unusual physical properties. Several chalcogenides are identified as topological insulators based on theoretical calculations and spectroscopic measurements. However, there are many challenges to make use of their exotic properties in electrical measurements. We propose topological insulator nanostructures, with large surface-to-volume ratio, enhance the surface properties in electron transport process. Our systematic transport measurements reveal the signature of the surface carriers on nanostructures of these chalcogenides. Combined with detailed structural and compositional analyses, our studies addressed some material challenges to probe and access the surface electronic properties on these chalcogenide topological insulators. Some chalcogenide nanomaterials also serve as attractive electrocatalysts for water splitting. With the interest to use hydrogen as a sustainable and carbon-free energy carrier, it is attractive to explore and optimize catalyst materials suitable for electrochemical water reduction. Certain layered dichalcogenides, such as MoS2 and WS2, are chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with the promise to replace noble metal catalysts like Pt. Previous studies have identified the edges of the molecular layers are catalytically active, which opens up a rational pathway to boost the activity by increasing the exposed edge sites. We developed a synthesis technique to produce edge-rich thin films and nanostructures. The structural engineering and further chemical doping process allow us to access novel MoS2 catalyst with high activity for HER. In addition, we also identified a new group of first-row transition metal dichalcogenides (ME2, M = Fe, Co, Ni ; E = S, Se) catalytically active towards HER. These catalysts exhibit excellent activity and stablilty that expand the family of non-precious HER catalysts.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the design and synthesis of novel one-dimensional colloidal chalcogenide hetero-nanostructures for enhancing solar energy conversion applications. Semiconducting nanomaterials are particular attractive for energy conversion due to the quantum confinement effects dictating their unique optical and electronic properties. Steering the photo-induced charge-flow based on unique bandgap alignment in semiconductor heterojunctions is critical for photo-electric/chemical conversion. The author presents the controllable preparation strategies to synthesize 1D chalcogenide hetero-nanostructures with various fine structures, further been used as excellent template materials for preparing other novel and complex hybrid architectures through a series of chemical transformations. The heterogeneous growth mechanisms of novel hetero-nanostructures is studied for developing a facile and general method to prepare more novel heterostructures. The band gap structure simulations, detailed charge carrier behaviour and unique solar energy conversion properties of the prepared hybrid nanostructures are deeply investigated. This work would open a new door to rationally designing hybrid systems for photo-induced applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chalcogenides are ubiquitous in academia and industry. We focus on chalcogenides for phase-change memory and topological insulators. Phase change memory (PCM) utilizes the resistivity contrast between the crystalline and amorphous phases of certain chalcogenides to store information. Industry is making progress in PCM, which could someday compete with flash memory due to its superior scalability, fast switching and high endurance. In contrast, the field of topological insulators is very young. Topological insulators, bulk insulators with conductive surface states, have attracted great attention since their discovery five years ago. They have exotic properties and are exciting for both fundamental studies and potential applications. Our studies of chalcogenide nanomaterials for PCM and topological insulators provided new insights into these fascinating materials. We developed a method to switch PCM cells inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM), allowing direct correlation of electrical behavior with structural changes. Using this technique, we found that the electrical behavior of Ge2Sb2Te3 lateral phase-change cells depends strongly on the highly variable microstructure of the amorphous domain. In search of new PCM materials, we developed the VLS synthesis of GeTe and Sb2Te3 phase-change nanowires. In situ TEM observation of these nanowires revealed a new switching mechanism via the opening and closing of voids. We also synthesized single-crystalline topological insulator nanoribbons, whose large surface to bulk conduction ratio increases the relative contribution of the surface states. We successfully measured Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the nanoribbons, thereby observing one of the first electrical signatures of the topological states in this material system.

Book excerpt: Nanomaterials via Single-Source Precursors: Synthesis, Processing and Applications presents recent results and overviews of synthesis, processing, characterization and applications of advanced materials for energy, electronics, biomedicine, sensors and aerospace. A variety of processing methods (vapor, liquid and solid-state) are covered, along with materials, including metals, oxides, semiconductor, sulfides, selenides, nitrides, and carbon-based materials. Production of quantum dots, nanoparticles, thin films and composites are described by a collection of international experts. Given the ability to customize the phase, morphology, and properties of target materials, this "rational approach to synthesis and processing is a disruptive technology for electronic, energy, structural and biomedical (nano)materials and devices. The use of single-source chemical precursors for materials processing technology allows for intimate elemental mixing and hence production of complex materials at temperatures well below traditional physical methods and those involving direct combination of elements. The use of lower temperatures enables thin-film deposition on lightweight polymer substrates and reduces damage to complex devices structures such as used in power, electronics and sensors. - Discusses new approaches to synthesis or single-source precursors (SSPs) and the concept of rational design of materials - Includes materials processing of SSPs in the design of new materials and novel devices - Provides comprehensive coverage of the subject (materials science and chemistry) as related to SSPs and the range of potential applications

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a growing interest in the application of chalcogenide nanoparticles (NPs), e.g. Se, Te, CdSe and CdTe NPs, in various industrial sectors including energy, petroleum refining and in the field of biology and medicine. Moreover, due to the high toxicity of chalcogen oxyanions, their release into the environment is of great concern. Thus, emphasis was given in this study on the development of a novel microbial synthesis process of chalcogenide NPs by combining biological treatment of Se/Te containing wastewaters with biorecovery in the form of Se NPs, Te NPs and CdSe NPs. Enrichment of Se-oxyanion reducing microorganisms was carried out to simultaneously remove selenite (Se(IV)) and cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewaters by combining bioremediation of toxic Se-rich wastewater with the biorecovery of Se as CdSe NPs. The results showed compositional changes in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix of the anaerobic granular sludge upon exposure to Cd(II) and Se(IV) and identified the roles of EPS fractions in the biogenesis of CdSe NPs. Besides, it was found that the EPS on the surface of the biogenic Se NPs play a major role in lowering the bioavailability and toxicity of biogenic Se(0) compared to chemogenic Se(0) NPs. An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was used for the first time to continuously remove tellurite from wastewater and recover biogenic Te(0).
