Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the syntheses of 3d-4f-metal complexes starting from preformed compounds of Mn, Fe and Co, lanthanide salts and organic ligands and also the investigation of their structures and properties. 41 new polynuclear heterometallic metal complexes were synthesised in the course of this work with different interesting properties. The structures of all obtained compounds have been confirmed using X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of 22 complexes were studied, of which four show frequency dependent out-of-phase signals as expected for SMMs. The catalytic activity of calcinated {Mn4Dy6Li2} was investigated and proved effective for the oxidation of CO. It was established, that the use of precursors leads to new families of compounds. Moreover the study of isostructural compounds across the lanthanide series showed 1) that the incorporation of 4f ions introduces magnetic anisotropy and 2) DyIII is usually the best candidate for targeting 3d-4f-SMMs.

The relative energy of the 5d and 4f orbitals are very similar and sensitive to occupancy of orbitals but on the basis of stability of 4f shell which is slightly more compare to 5d shell, it was considered as f-block element. This criterion was followed by next 14 elements and electrons enter in the 4f shell until at lutetium.2The lanthanides are 15 elements in the periodic table considered as the first f-block elements, starting from lanthanum (59La) to lutetium (71Lu), which are commonly referred as “rare earth metals” along with scandium and yttrium. They are chemically represented by the symbol “Ln”.

Book excerpt: The thesis is devoted to the synthesis of homo- and heterometallic 3d-metal complexes with Schiff base ligands or derivatives of 1,2,4,5- tetrazine, together with the investigation of their structural and physico-chemical properties. This work can be divided in three parts. In the first part we have been mainly focused on the Schiff base ligands, derivatives of the salicylaldehyde and aminoalcohols. Thirteen heterometallic complexes were obtained and fully characterized. It has been shown that the synthesized compounds possess catalytic activity in the photochemical water oxidation, exhibit photoconducting properties in polymeric composites and can be used for the development of multifunctional materials of wide use. The second part describes the functionalization of Schiff base ligands by the introduction into their structure of electroactive tetrathiafulvalene and dithiolate moieties. Two new families of ligands were synthesized and characterized. The series of radicalcation salts and homo- and heterometallic dithiolene complexes together with the investigation of their physical properties have been described. The last part is devoted to the tetrazine based ligands. The main advantages of the tetrazine ring have been discussed. Two new ligands, derivative of picolylamine and their mono- and binuclear 3d-metal complexes are reported. In conclusion, perspectives of further research related to the described results were highlighted.
