Finally, at the end of each chapter. representative synthetic procedures are given together with relevant experimental considerations. A general table is included as an appendix. This contains substrate classes and resulting product classes, referring to the oxidative procedures in the chapters. The table provides the synthetic organic chemist with a quick overview of oxidation possibilities with metal-contain ing oxidants, enabling him to select the right method for his purpose. The editors hope that not only organic research chemists in industry and at universities, but also advanced undergraduate and graduate students in organic chemistry, will find this book a useful guide in the design, understanding, and practical performance of oxidative organic syntheses. Some papers explain the cyclopropanation of silyl enol ethers and the two-phase reactions in the chemistry of carbanions and halocarbenes as useful tools in organic synthesis. One paper investigates the "biogenetic-type" synthesis of the bicyclic penicillin-cephalosporin antibiotics from an acyclic tripeptide equivalent. Another paper explains the advantages of the two-phase system to generate trihalomethylanions and dihalocarbenes as it allows the investigator to carry out all the reactions typical for these species easily. The system also readily applies to the reactions of some carbanions with aromatic nitrocompounds. Thallium(III) nitrate (TTN) can be used as an oxidant in organic synthesis; reactions that follow it use include the oxidations and oxidative rearrangements of olefins, acetylenes, ketones and compounds containing carbon-nitrogen double bonds. Another paper presents some examples that use singlet oxygen in synthetic organic chemistry. This collection is useful for researchers, technicians, and scientists whose works involve organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and other related fields of chemistry, such as physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Indeed, greater product selectivity has an important impact on energy and resource utilization, in terms of reduced process energy requirements for product separation and purification, in terms of low-value by-products, and in terms of environmental acceptance and compatibility. Moreover, more and more chemicals, especially pharmaceuticals, have to be sold in an optically active form. The search for selectivity constitutes a tremendous challenge for the chemists. In the last two decades, homogeneous transition metal based catalysis has emerged as one of the most promising tools for obtaining selectivity. In connection with developments in this area, this book contains updated and expanded versions of most of the lectures presented at a Cornett course held in Trieste (Italy) in 1989 and sponsored by the European Community. A primary aim is to cultivate a deeper understanding of the parameters that govern the selectivities and stimulate a wider utilization of transition metal based catalysis in organic synthesis. All aspects of selectivity, chemo-, regio-, stereo- and enantioselectivity are considered and illustrated by applications in various fields or organic synthesis. The impact of catalysis in oxydation, reduction, carbonylation reactions, carbene chemistry, in Ni and Pd promoted dimerizations, oligomerizations as well as fonctionalisations is stressed, quite often with special emphasis laid on reaction mechanisms. In this aspect, the last chapter examplifies the interest of high pressure NMR and IR when investigating the nature of reaction intermediates in homogeneous reactions.
