Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Principles and Methods in Latin Syntax Two things only need to be said by way of preface to this book. In the first place, it makes no claim to the character of a systematic statement of the principles of syntax. It is a discussion of certain principles and of the methods of investigation to which these principles lead. In the second place, it deals primarily with Latin. If some of the chapters are equally applicable to the syntax of other languages, that is only because it is impossible to write of the fundamental questions of syntactical method without going beyond the phe nomena of a single language. The illustrations are all from Latin, and nearly all from Plautus, many of them being taken, as are portions of some chapters, from articles of mine in the American Journal of Philology, to which reference is made at the proper place. Book excerpt: Plautus' Latin was much admired by Cicero and represents the "Shakespearean" stage of the language, before the great wealth of idiomatic expressions was replaced by the more formalized style of the classical period. Indeed, a study of Plautine syntax will do much to elucidate the nuances of later writers. Of course, he is an author to be savored in his own right and, even in verse, he captures the all vigor and vitality of the living language as spoken by the ordinary people of Rome.Lindsay's summary of Plautine syntax is presented in handy form: colloquialisms, cases, adjective, pronoun, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection each receive systematic treatment. This is a superb resource, not only for anyone wishing to enjoy the plays of Plautus, but also for all lovers of the Latin language.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Captivi of Plautus: Edited With Introduction, Apparatus Criticus and Commentary Since the Captivi is the one play of Plautus in whose text are represented all the pre-Renaissance MSS., I have thought it worth while to re-collate the MSS. for this edition and provide a full apparatus criticus. The gleaning of the field already reaped by the authors of the larger Teubner edition has not been mis-spent labour. It has contributed not merely to the improvement of the text, especially in the matter of orthography, but to a clearer knowledge of the relationship between the MSS. of the first eight plays. The introductory pages deal mainly with Prosody and Metre, the two subjects on which information seems most required by English students of Plautus. I hope in time to edit other plays of this author and to take up one by one the remaining topics of interest, such as Plautine Accidence and Syntax, and the history of the Plautine Text in antiquity. To Professor Skutsch of Breslau University my best thanks are due for the help I have received from him in the preparation of this volume. Maccius Plautus: With Introduction and Notes In writing the commentary I have made use of all previous editions and have to acknowledge my indebtedness especially to those of Brix and Ussing. I have tried to make the notes illustrate the grammar and phraseology not merely of this play, but of Plautus as a whole, and with that object have quoted more freely than I should otherwise have done from the rest of the plays. Moreover I have attempted in the notes to call attention to as many points as possible - some of them may seem of minor importance - believing that a better knowledge of the language and more valuable habits of mind are acquired by the thorough study of one work, or even of a portion of one work, than by the hasty reading of half-a dozen. However, some idioms and words have necessitated fuller notes than are found in some of the other books of the series. The aim has been to explain archaic forms, give meanings of words employed in unusual senses, and of such as are not found in the smaller school dictionaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plays of Plautus have long been recognized as a unique mine of information about the spoken Latin of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. But detailed and up-to-date linguistic treatments of the Plautine meters and other phenomena in his plays have hitherto been lacking. This book seeks to remedy that gap by presenting a series of case-studies to glean information about the synchronic grammar of Plautine Latin, in particular the rhythmic organization of Latin speech and the effects of syntactic processes on Latin prosodic phonology. Some of the topics, such as enjambement and the aphaeresis of “est”, have never before received such treatment, while others, such as Meyer’s and Luchs’s laws, split resolutions, and iambic shortening, are provided a firmer linguistic footing, and fuller discussion of allied issues, than hitherto. Topics in Italic syntax (such as the syntactic structure of adpositional phrases and their history) and in Indo-European morphophonology (such as the prosodic status of finite verbs) are dealt with as well, as is an investigation into the effects of pragmatics on the rhythmic organization of phrases. The book will be of interest to classicists, comparative philologists, and general linguists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Original Element in Plautus "I wish," said the teacher to the student, "that you were working at an artist, and not at a hack like Plautus." The student, puzzled and discouraged, consulted other authorities as to the precise meaning of "hack," and found that it meant "a literary drudge, who is much overworked, and therefore a person habitually tired." Now, whatever other failings may be ascribed to Plautus, he certainly never shows signs of being tired; and although he is often casually set down as being nothing better than a mechanical translator from Greek into Latin, yet a perusal of his plays suggests that many of them are the work neither of a hack nor of a single artist, but of several artists, of whom Plautus was indubitably one. From the vague generalities which are found in treatises on Latin literature, it would seem that the plays of Plautus "are in the main versions or imitations of originals of the New Comedy." Therefore, in proportion to the value which we set upon both the New Comedy and Plautus, it is profitable to examine how the Roman poet treated the material at his command, and to what extent, if at all, he contributed to his work something original, something of his own personality.
