Three species, Asplenium markusbeckeri Eb.Fisch. & Lobin, A. ramicola Eb.Fisch. & Lobin, and A. uschiae Eb.Fisch. & Lobin are described as new to science. The new species are illustrated and their affinities are discussed. A key to all Aspleniaceae recorded from Rwanda is provided, and representative specimens from Rwanda are cited. The phytogeography of the Aspleniaceae of Rwanda is discussed. Two lectotypes are designated for Asplenium mildbraedii and A. trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens. Three species previously recorded for Rwanda (Asplenium goetzei, A. kassneri, A. lademannianum) are excluded from the flora. Book excerpt: In addition to being an important component of the floras of Africa, Arabia and Madagascar, aloes are widely cultivated by hobbyists in Europe, the Americas, Australasia, Africa, India and other parts of the world. Aloe vera is one of the most important cultivated medicinal plants. Consequently they are of considerable importance in the horticultural trade and for their commercial value. Aloes: The definitive guide is a comprehensive account of all known aloes. For the first time since the publication of G.W. Reynolds' two books over 40 years ago, all currently accepted Aloe taxa are brought together, with descriptions, illustrations, reference toprotologues, location of types, distribution, habitat, and brief notes on diagnostic features and relationships. Dichotomous keys lead to identification of all taxa arranged in 10 groups based on habit and size, from small to large. An extensive, illustrated chapter on the history of discovery, especially in tropical Africa, adds interest. The text includes a pictorial glossary, bibliography, and index with synonyms.A must-have reference for succulent plant enthusiasts, hobbyists, nurserymen, CITES agencies, research workers and libraries, and botanists.

Fully updated text (including additional species entries) and distribution maps, numerous new photographs and a new 87-page section of full-tree photographs makes this well-loved guide even more indispensable in the field. Southern Africa has a rich variety of tree species, with an estimated 2 100 indigenous species and more than 100 naturalised aliens. Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa describes and illustrates more than 1 000 of these, focusing on trees that are the most common and most likely to be encountered. Species are logically arranged in 43 groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem features, and each account is illustrated by full-colour photographs of the plant’s diagnostic parts. The text also touches on the practical uses of the plants.

Book excerpt: The fifth edition Flora of the Sydney Region is the definitive technical guide to the identification of wild plants in one of the world's botanical heartlands. The Flora covers an area of coastal New South Wales stretching from Newcastle to Nowra and west to Lithgow. This comprehensive treatment contains diagnostic keys and descriptions that make it possible for the reader to identify any of the 3,000 indigenous or naturalised plant species found in this botanically diverse region. The identification keys efficiently guide the reader through those plant characteristics necessary to arrive at the correct scientific name. The identification process is further aided by a glossary and an extensive index of scientific and common plant names. Species descriptions include habitat details and flowering times. An instructive introduction provides support for the novice botanist. When first published in 1963, Flora of the Sydney Region was the only complete regional Flora in Australia. This fully revised edition of the Flora incorporates the wealth of botanical research which has taken place since the publication of the fourth edition in 1994. As a trusty field guide and authoritative desktop reference, it will be a constant companion to environmental consultants, amateur and professional botanists, ecologists, bushwalkers, bush regenerators and teaching institutions.
