Book excerpt: This country profile of Nicaragua represents 1 of a series of profiles developed for the purpose of providing a study of the health conditions of a country and their impact on socioeconomic development. Readily available data are reviewed and analyzed in order to identify the problem areas in disease patterns, delivery of care, and planning. Unfortunately, much of the data suffer from inaccuracies and contradictions, and, as a consequence, conclusions and recommendations must be considered tentative and applied cautiously. The report covers the following areas: background information, health status, special programs - maternal and child health and family planning, nutrition, environmental sanitation, immunization coverage, and disease-specific programs, organization of services, health resources, and national planning. In the conclusions and recommendations section, the point is made that the major health problems in Nicaragua are similar to those in other developing nations in the Western hemisphere. Extensive malnutrition, high prevalence rates of infection and parasitic diseases, and rapid population growth all combine to produce a low level of health in the population. Nicaraguan officials developed a National Health Plan to focus on those areas which create the most serious health problems and the organizational and resource requirements necessary to eliminate them. The proportion of government funds allocated to health has steadily increased over the past decade. However, despite these efforts, most of the major health programs lack cohesion and direction. There is a need for reassessment of the actual need for treatment services. Greater impact on the health of the Nicaraguan people might be accomplished by investments in preventive services or nontraditional treatment programs.
