Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Quaternary Entomology addresses the science of fossil insects by demonstrating their immense contribution to our knowledge of the paleoenvironmental and climatological record of the past 2.6 million years. In this comprehensive survey of the field, Scott A. Elias recounts development of scholarship, reviews the fossil insect record from Quaternary deposits throughout the world, and points to rewarding areas for future research. The study of Quaternary entomology is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental changes. Most insects are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like. Describes and identifies principal characteristics of fossil insect groups of the Quaternary period Ties Quaternary insect studies to the larger field of paleoecology Offers global coverage of the subject with specific regional examples Illustrates specific methods and procedures for conducting research in Quaternary Entomology Offers unique insight into overlying trends and broader implications of Quaternary climate change based on insect life of the period

Book excerpt: This book discusses the impacts of climate change that are already being felt on every continent and provides the scientific basis for a number of modern approaches and state-of-the art methods for monitoring the environment, social behavior and human expectations concerning protection of the environment. The book approaches these issues from the perspectives of various disciplines, from physics to the social sciences, and highlights both current challenges and future prospects. On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – 12 of which involve taking action on climate change – officially came into force. To achieve sustainable development, it is and will remain crucial to harmonize three interconnected core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outflow of heat from the earth's interior, the terrestrial heat flow, and the temperature field at depth are determined by deep-seated tectonic processes. The knowledge of the re gional heat flow pattern is thus very important in geophysics and provides a useful tool for studying crustal and litho spheric structure and understanding the nature of their evo lution. In order to use the results of heat flow measurements for regional studies and/or to correlate the observed surface geothermal activity with other geophysical or geological fea tures, a map showing the surface distribution of heat flow is necessary. Since 1963, when the first comprehensive listing of all available heat flow data appeared (Lee, 1963), several at tempts have been made to up-date the list, to classify all the data and to interpret them with respect to tectonics, deep structure and to use them for constructing surface heat flow maps. The first listing was subsequently revised by Lee and Uyeda (1965); numerous new data which were published there after were included in successive catalogs compiled by Simmons and Horai (1968) and then again by Jessop et al. (1976). The map showing the surface heat flow pattern may also be of great value for practical purposes, in view of the recent world-wide search for applicable sources of geothermal energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of glacial deposits is continually increasing, not only for pure scientists, but also for applied geologists. In many parts of Europe, as well as North America, these deposits provide major sand and gravel reserves, groundwater reservoirs and the foundation on which houses, roads and bridges are built. They are thus fundamental to many environmental and engineering problems. In this volume forty six authors report on the current state of specialist research on various aspects of glacial deposits. The geographical coverage of their work — Norway, Sweden, Denmark, West Germany and the Netherlands — represents a transect from the centres of the major North European Quaternary glaciations to their margins. Among the topics covered are: drift prospecting, modern varve chronology, fine gravel analysis, internal structure of thrust moraines, stratigraphical interpretation of well-logs, echo-sounding of North Sea deposits, erratic pebbles as indicators, till fabrics, palaeontology of glacial deposits, multi-component analyses, glacial deposition on the continental shelf and the genetic interpretation of glacial landforms. In addition there are reviews of the regional stratigraphy and glacial chronology of each of the five countries represented and detailed discussion of the problems of genesis, reworking, transport and deposition of Quaternary glacial sediments. Much information is previously unpublished. The volume is intended to serve both as a text book for students and informed amateurs and as a guide for professional geoscientists. The 53 chapters are richly illustrated (409 black and white illustrations and 95 colour photos). In addition to a full and detailed index, the book contains one of the most up-to-date and complete lists of the most important literature on Quaternary problems in North-West Europe, with over 700 references, which serve as a guide for further studies.
