Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental policy may produce effects which go beyond the scope of the specific policy’s initial aim. Reforestation, for example, generates positive benefits not only in the shape of climate protection but also in the shape of the combat of biodiversity loss and it may also raise the attractiveness of a region for tourists. There are several examples of environmental policies, generating initially unintended co-effects. These co-effects are not always positive, of course. This book addresses the wide range of (co-)effects associated with environmental policies which may increase or decrease the attractiveness of these policies. Therefore, the book’s scope goes beyond the standard economic analyses, which regularly postulate a specific cause-and-effect chain. The complexity and wide range of benefits is investigated from different perspectives and by means of different methodologies. Among the environmental policies discussed are climate mitigation policies as well as adaptation policies. The inclusion of all relevant effects of environmental policy (and therefore not only of the primarily intended effects) tends to have a strong impact on the efficient policy design. The areas which are covered by the book will be of great interest mainly for economists (environmental economics, ecological economics), ecologists and political scientists as well as practitioners, scientists and policy makers.

Book excerpt: The management of rights-of-way by electric and telephone utilities, highway departments, gas pipeline companies, and railroads around the world is guided and constrained by policies and regulations to protect the environment. Companies that manage rights-of-way are required to comply with these regulations, and are seeking the most cost-effective management practices that, at the same time, demonstrate stewardship of the environment. Protection of biodiversity and sustainable development are especially important as national goals in many countries, and rights-of-way managers are seeking practical ways to include public participation in their operations. * Addresses environmental issues in rights-of-way planning and management * Provides a forum for information exchange among various agencies, industries, environmental consultants, and academic organizations * Presents peer-reviewed papers to help achieve a better understanding of current environmental issues involved in rights-of-way management

Book excerpt: This volume presents six new papers on environmental and energy economics and policy in the United States. Rebecca Davis, J. Scott Holladay, and Charles Sims analyze recent trends in and forecasts of coal-fired power plant retirements with and without new climate policy. Severin Borenstein and James Bushnell examine the efficiency of pricing for electricity, natural gas, and gasoline. James Archsmith, Erich Muehlegger, and David Rapson provide a prospective analysis of future pathways for electric vehicle adoption. Kenneth Gillingham considers the consequences of such pathways for the design of fuel vehicle economy standards. Frank Wolak investigates the long-term resource adequacy in wholesale electricity markets with significant intermittent renewables. Finally, Barbara Annicchiarico, Stefano Carattini, Carolyn Fischer, and Garth Heutel review the state of research on the interactions between business cycles and environmental policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International discussion of environmental management is essential not only because of the international nature of the problems concerned but also to enable workers in one country to benefit from the experience gained in another. This symposium provided an international forum at which to discuss the role of local and regional governments in environmental management. The success of future policies will depend, to a large extent, on the readiness of such local bodies to initiate, co-operate, co-ordinate and implement in this field. The book includes key papers by leading experts from Europe and the USA. Papers are grouped into three main areas: environmental requirements from various participants in the process; policy and practice; new demands on administration and management --- organisational, financial and managerial consequences. Also included are five short papers and the reports of three discussion groups.
