Book Synopsis The Frontiers of Applied Demography by : David A. Swanson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details cutting-edge methods and findings that may shape the future of applied demography. Inside, readers will discover new insights into the databases, substantive issues, and methodological approaches that can help them to improve how they use demography in decision making and planning problems in both public and private settings. The topics and perspectives are found in the book’s 23 chapters, which are organized into three major sections: (I) Demographic Information for Decision-Making: Case Studies; (II) Data: Issues and Analyses; and (III) Projection and Estimation Methods: Evaluations, Examples, and Discussions. Coverage includes chapters on migration, demographic market analysis, future courtroom needs, trends in the needs of the elderly, access to health care, longitudinal data systems, census costs, and new approaches to small area estimation and projection methods. The case studies represent a wide range of countries, including Australia, Canada, China, England, India, Japan, and the United States of America. Overall, this edited volume collects papers that were presented at different conferences, including the 8th international conference on population geographies (University of Queensland, 2015), the 2014 Applied Demography Conference (San Antonio, Texas, USA), and the annual conference of the Canadian Population Society. Applied demography touches many aspects of our lives and its practitioners continue to push methodological and empirical boundaries. This book documents the steady evolution of this field. It shows demographers, sociologists, economists, planners, marketers, and others how they can improve the quality and relevance of demographic information now and in the future.

Download or read book Population and Birth-Control written by Eden Paul and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Population and Birth-Control: A Symposium In fact, in times such as these, the social worker, the advocate of reforms, is looked upon with impatience, with annoyance; he is considered more than merely a nuisance; he is looked upon as a menace, as an abomination that should be done away with. Nevertheless, all the scant courtesy, all the contumely notwithstanding, the man who believes that he is right, who feels that he has a mission to perform must continue to do his work, must persist in his duty as he sees it; he must deliver his message, even if, under certain circum stances, the message should seem to him a voice in the wilderness. These remarks apply with particular force to the subject of birth-control. When a nation has lost or is about to lose a million of its sons, physically the best specimens of manhood, then it listens with but ill-concealed or Open and angry impatience to the suggestion of limiting the number of offspring, of controlling the production of future war material. But we, who feel that reckless breeding with its resulting overpopulation and economic and moral misery is one of the causes Of war, must not halt in our propa ganda on the contrary, we must, if possible, intensify it. Even a voice in the wilderness is sometimes heard, and unwilling listeners do, now and then, become converted. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its origin 23 years ago as a pilot test conducted in four U.S. counties, the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) has been the focus of continuous research, development, and refinement. The survey cleared critical milestones 14 years ago when it began full-scale operations, including comprehensive nationwide coverage, and 5 years later when the ACS replaced a long-form sample questionnaire in the 2010 census as a source of detailed demographic and socioeconomic information. Throughout that existence and continuing today, ACS research and testing has worked to improve the survey's conduct in the face of challenges ranging from detailed and procedural to the broad and existential. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion at the September 26â€"27, 2018, Workshop on Improving the American Community Survey (ACS), sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau. Workshop participants explored uses of administrative records and third-party data to improve ACS operations and potential for boosting respondent participation through improved communication.
