Book excerpt: Based on a true story, Sylvia Rose: An Australian Story spans fifty years in the lives of Sylvia Rose, her husband, Jim, and their three children. Sylvia's ambitions are thwarted when she marries Jim. Her ever increasing desire to be a "princess" and escape her pedestrian background is constantly thwarted by a series of tragic situations and events that undermine her confidence and self esteem. The more she struggles, the more she becomes entangled, until finally, tragedy strikes. Other strong characters in the novel are Sylvia's understanding mother and Jim's neurotic and reclusive mother. The author is also a quasi- character in the novel, as he uses both metafiction and authorial intrusion to comment on his own relationship to the main characters. This unusual saga is written in five sections with a changing viewpoint in sections four and five.

Book excerpt: In rhymed couplets, with magical illustrations, Sylvia Rose and the Cherry Tree spins a story of adventure, imagination, and the importance of home. This very strange tale began in May in a friendly forest on a sunny day. Skipping along a path in the wood danced Sylvia Rose, and man, she was GOOD! Laughing and leaping came Sylvia Rose, Whirling and twirling on twinkly toes. Bold, adventurous Sylvia Rose loves visiting the animals and trees of the forest. The girl and her favorite cherry tree share almost everything, including dancing and stories, but they can’t travel the world together because the tree is rooted deep in the earth. Determined to overcome this obstacle, Sylvia Rose enlists her animal friends to uproot the glorious tree, and Sylvia and the tree set off globetrotting together, taking in the wonders of the world from the Eiffel Tower to the Sydney Opera House, each sight more amazing than the last. Back home in the forest, however, the animals begin to suffer without the food and shelter of their life-sustaining cherry tree. Can the tree give up her newfound freedom and return to her role in the forest ecosystem? Fountas & Pinnell Level M

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since her suicide in 1963 at the age of 30, Sylvia Plath has become a strange icon. This book addresses why this is the case and what this tells us about the way culture picks out important writers. The author argues that without a concept of fantasy we can understand neither Plath's work nor what she has come to represent. She proposes that no writer demonstrates more forcefully than Plath the importance of inner psychic life for the wider sexual and political world. By the author of Sexuality in the Field of Vision .

Download or read book Sylvia Pankhurst written by Rachel Holmes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A wonderful book ... Holmes sublimely illuminates Sylvia's extraordinary life' The Times 'A masterpiece' Vanessa Redgrave _______________ Born into one of Britain's most famous activist families, Sylvia Pankhurst was a natural rebel. A free spirit and radical visionary, history placed her in the shadow of her famous mother, Emmeline, and elder sister, Christabel. Yet artist Sylvia Pankhurst was the most revolutionary of them all. Sylvia found her voice fighting for votes for women, imprisoned and tortured in Holloway prison more than any other suffragette. But the vote was just the beginning of her lifelong defence of human rights. She engaged with political giants, warned of fascism in Europe, championed the liberation struggles in Africa and India and became an Ethiopian patriot. Her intimate life was no less controversial. The rupture between Sylvia, Emmeline and Christabel became worldwide news, while her romantic life drew public speculation and condemnation. Rachel Holmes interweaves the personal and political in an extraordinary celebration of a life in resistance, painting a compelling portrait of one of the greatest unsung political figures of the twentieth century. 'A monument to an astonishing life' Daily Telegraph, Best Biographies of 2020 'A robust and sensitive biography' Sunday Times, History Books of the Year 'A moving, powerful biography' Guardian
