Book excerpt: Nursing Education provides a strategic guide and practical focus to curriculum planning and development. It will help all those involved in the provision of nursing education to understand the issues involved at the different stages of preparing a nursing curriculum which: - meets both professional and academic requirements; - integrates theory and practice; - enables students to achieve the skills and competencies they need for professional practice; - includes different methods of teaching and learning; - provides clear guidance for student selection and assessment. Balancing theoretical principles with practical application, and linked closely to the NMC′s 2010 standards for pre-registration nursing, Jennifer Boore and Pat Deeny illustrate clearly and accessibly how to develop tailored education programmes so that nurse educators and clinicians in practice can enable their students to provide up-to-date and appropriate patient care.

Book Synopsis Fever Hospitals and Fever Nurses by : Margaret Currie
Download or read book Fever Hospitals and Fever Nurses written by Margaret Currie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well researched book provides an interesting study of the development of fever hospitals and fever nursing, mainly in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain. It provides new insights into the development of nursing roles and nurse education and looks at the lives of key figures at that time. The text examines how this once important branch of the nursing profession emerged in the nineteenth century, only to be discarded in the second half of the following century. Drawing on the work of Goffman and Foucault, the study shows how, aided by medical advances, fever nurses transformed their custodial duties into a therapeutic role and how training schemes were implemented to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses. As standards of living improved and patient’s chances of recovery increased, many fever hospitals became redundant and fever nurses were no longer required. The wisdom of creating fever hospitals and then disbanding them is questioned in the light of changing disease patterns, international travel and the threat posed by biological warfare.

Book Synopsis The Nurse Apprentice, 1860–1977 by : Ann Bradshaw
Download or read book The Nurse Apprentice, 1860–1977 written by Ann Bradshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British apprenticeship model of nurse training, developed under Florence Nightingale’s influence from 1860 at St Thomas’s Hospital, gained national and world-wide recognition. Its end was heralded with the publication of the last national syllabus from the General Nursing Council for England and Wales in 1977. This apprenticeship model, a crucial part of the history of British health care for over a century, is the subject of this book. Primary evidence, much of it original, is gained from Parliamentary debates and reports, syllabuses, long neglected nursing textbooks, major governmental and professional reports, and the voices of nurses themselves expressed through their professional journals. Primary sources are systematically re-examined and contextually interpreted in the light of new evidence. The study in particular interprets the contemporary attitudes and moral values underpinning the apprenticeship system, especially the place of vocation. The reasons for the ending of this system, arising in part from the cultural shifts of the 1960s, are explained in relation to this historical moral context. The reader sees how the self-understanding of the profession shifts, with much tension and disagreement, as mores change. The book fills a major gap in the history of nurse training, by giving a sustained account of the apprenticeship model of nursing in context, and charting changing values away from the historic vocational tradition. Its copious use of primary sources will make this a key text for nurses, historians and policy makers.
