Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource is perfect for direct instruction using Science of Reading strategies! Apply and generalize syllabication strategies or just push your students to read higher level words with predictable patterns. Purpose: To provide a user-friendly resource that can be used before and/or during a lesson to drive phonics practice with encoding and decoding. Rationale: Teachers and service providers are able to quickly reference the word lists containing specific phonics skills, syllable types, number of syllables, and syllable patterns. After taking my Orton Gillingham training, I struggled to find a well-organized resource for reference when planning and during my lessons. I have used several resources but the organization was clunky and was not aligned to the scaffolding of OG beyond single syllable words. To solve this problem, Morgan Learning created a quick, user-friendly resources in the Syllable Division Word Lists (by Phonics, Type, & Pattern). This set of word lists is sorted by: phonics complexity (CVC, Digraphs, or Blends) syllable type (open, closed, magic e, vowel pair, bossy r, consonant-le) number of syllables (2 or 3), and syllable pattern (VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V, V/V).

The module addresses differences between syllables and morphemes, between "irregular" and "high frequency" words, and among six syllable types. After learning this content, teachers can approach phonics, spelling, and word study with confidence."--Page 4 of cover.

Like haiku, sijo are brief and accessible, and the witty last line winds up each poem with a surprise. The verses in this book illuminate funny, unexpected, amazing aspects of the everyday--of breakfast, thunder and lightning, houseplants, tennis, freshly laundered socks. Carefully crafted and deceptively simple, Linda Sue Park's sijo are a pleasure to read and an irresistible invitation to experiment with an unfamiliar poetic form. Istvan Banyai's irrepressibly giddy and sophisticated illustrations add a one-of-a-kind luster to a book that is truly a gem.

Book excerpt: The 300 systematic, engaging lessons in the second edition of Power Tools for Literacy are aligned with the Orton Gillingham method and the Common Core Reading Standards. Become an expert in teaching phonics in the context of syllable patterns and showing students how to analyze or chunk words into phonemes, syllables, base words, prefixes, suffixes, Latin roots, and Greek elements. Mastering and blending these phonograms and morphemes enables students to decode and spell one-syllable and polysyllabic words with ease and accuracy.A report by The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development states, "For those children who are at risk for reading failure, highly direct and systematic instruction to develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills is required." In keeping with this principle, Power Tools for Literacy follows an explicit progression of phonics skills proven successful with struggling readers, students with learning differences or dyslexia, and English learners.Designed for grades 3-12, this program lends itself to individual or group instruction. The look and feel of the lessons is appropriate for any age group; material that appears tailored to young children has been avoided.Power Tools for Literacy uses a variety of interesting activities to cover these key topics and more:Short and long vowels with consonant blends and digraphsR-controlled vowels, diphthongs, and vowel digraphsSyllable patternsRules for dividing polysyllabic wordsCompound wordsReading, spelling, and defining 50 suffixesSpelling rules for adding suffixes to base wordsVocabulary enrichment by reading, spelling, and defining 50 prefixesAccented and unaccented syllablesFree and bound morphemesLatin roots and Greek combining formsWeekly spelling lists that incorporate high frequency sight wordsThe unique aspect of Power Tools for Literacy is the use of syllable codes. Each type of syllable has a code abbreviation. Utilizing codes in conjunction with a multisensory technique reinforces the structure of previously covered concepts and builds in review to achieve automaticity. This program is only one component of an effective reading program. It should be coupled with a literature-based curriculum, accompanied by intensive vocabulary development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The syllable is a natural unit of organization in spoken language whose strongest cross-linguistic patterns are often explained in terms of a universal preference for the CV structure. Syllable patterns involving long sequences of consonants are both typologically rare and theoretically marginalized, with few approaches treating these as natural or unproblematic structures. This book is an investigation of the properties of languages with highly complex syllable patterns. The two aims are (i) to establish whether these languages share other linguistic features in common such that they constitute a distinct linguistic type, and (ii) to identify possible diachronic paths and natural mechanisms by which these patterns come about in the history of a language. These issues are investigated in a diversified sample of 100 languages, 25 of which have highly complex syllable patterns.
