Book excerpt: “THROUGH THE EYES OF OPHELIA: A STORY OF ADDICTION”, is a true story about my addiction to crack-cocaine, and how it took me down a road of despair. My drug use started with alcohol, which led me to marijuana, which led me to cocaine, and then to crack-cocaine where I lost all control and was so addicted I was at the point of death. If you know anyone that is in the beginning stages of addiction get them help because it is only going to progress to the point of destruction. I hope you will learn from my story, and teach your children about the dangers of drugs be it soft or hard.

This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of optogenetic and pharmacogenetic tools to study the neural circuits underlying emotional valence, feeding, arousal and motivated behaviors has provided crucial insights into brain function. Expression of light sensitive proteins into specific neurons and subsequent stimulation by light (optogenetics) to control neuronal activity or expression of designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADD) in specific neuronal populations with subsequent activation or suppression of neuronal activity by an otherwise inert ligand (pharmacogenetics) provides control over defined elements of neural circuits. These novel tools have provided a more in depth understanding into several questions about brain function. These include: • Regulation of sleep-wake transition by the interaction of hypocretin neurons of lateral hypothalamus and nor adrenergic neurons of the locus coruleaus • Regulation of feeding by AGRP and POMC neurons in arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus • Place preference and positive reinforcement by activation of DA neuron of VTA • Place aversion by activation of VTA GABA and lateral habenula neurons • Opposing influences on reinforcement by activation of D1 and D2 expressing medium spiny neurons of dorsal striatum and nucleus accumbens The list still grows... From cell type specific manipulations to signaling properties in the cell (Dietz et al 2012) with unprecedented temporal resolution, these tools revolutionize the exploration of pathways/connectivity. Recent years also witnessed the extension of applying these tools from studying emotional valence and motivated behavior to reactivation of memory. c-fos based genetic approaches allowed us to integrate light sensitive opsins or DREADD receptor into specific neurons that are activated by certain learning events (for example fear) (Garner et al 2012; Liu et al 2012). In this Research Topic, we welcome researchers to contribute original research articles, review articles, methods and commentary on topics utilizing optogenetic and pharmacogenetic tools to study the neural circuits underlying emotional valence, motivation, reinforcement and memory. We believe the Research Topic will shine light on various questions we have about brain function by using novel optogenetic and pharmacogenetic tools and will hopefully inspire ongoing research to overcome the hurdles of using these tools to advance clinical applications.

Book excerpt: A woman shares the story of her descent into alcoholism, her journey to getting clean and sober, and life on the other side. The tragic death of her teenage son, Jon, forces Barb Rogers to delve into the horror that was her life to that point. Due to a home life fraught with substance and emotional abuse, she found herself bottomed out more than once, and homeless along the way. “When asked in early recovery if I knew any prayers, the one I could think of was the child’s nighttime prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep.” As I thought of it, I recalled the long nights when I simply wanted to go to sleep and never wake up.” Barb learned most of her life lessons through pain, tragedy, and addiction. This is not a glamorous story; it is real and raw. It is not about survival of the fittest, but the weak, the hopeless, the helpless, the truly addicted—not only to substances, but to drama, anger, excuses, and justifications. Barb reflects on how she reached her lowest point, just what it was, and how and why she finally reached out to a 12-step program for help. She shows the reader what it’s really like to survive, to stay clean and sober, and to find a way to the other side. Recovery was one of the most difficult things she ever did but it was “worth every effort I put out.” Barb Rogers would be the first to tell you she's not special. But her story, told well and with humor, is sure to inspire anyone to put in the work to improve their lives. Praise for If I Die before I Wake “Raw, vivid, and brutally heart-wrenching, Barb’s account of her shattered life...will undoubtedly hit home with many.”—Jennifer Storm, author of Blackout Girl and Leave the Light On “Gripping, tragic, and absolutely impossible to put down.”—Rachael Brownell, author of Mommy Doesn’t Drink Here Anymore “An inspiring story that reflects the transformative power of Twelve Step recovery. This is a particularly important book for any woman who is struggling with sobriety and feels she will never achieve it.”—Stephanie S. Covington, author of A Woman’s Way Through the Twelve Steps

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a newly enlarged edition of this eye-opening book, David T. Courtwright offers an original interpretation of a puzzling chapter in American social and medical history: the dramatic change in the pattern of opiate addiction--from respectable upper-class matrons to lower-class urban males, often with a criminal record. Challenging the prevailing view that the shift resulted from harsh new laws, Courtwright shows that the crucial role was played by the medical rather than the legal profession. Dark Paradise tells the story not only from the standpoint of legal and medical sources, but also from the perspective of addicts themselves. With the addition of a new introduction and two new chapters on heroin addiction and treatment since 1940, Courtwright has updated this compelling work of social history for the present crisis of the Drug War.

Book excerpt: Ultimately, choosing whether to sit or get off the pot is the most difficult decision to make. That is, in sum, the conundrum that Dan Brown, the central protagonist of Counselor, is forced to confront, both literally and figuratively. As the story begins, Dan, a young New York attorney, sits on the toilet in his office's sterile bathroom, only to be suddenly confronted and belittled by burly Mr. Tubman -- his brutal, antagonistic boss -- in this most private of locales. The plot unravels as this character continues to sit on the toilet after the rebuke, alone and contemplating the choices he has made. We get to know him and his story, complete with tumultuous love affairs, devastating heart break, drug addiction, betrayal and family destruction. Set partially in Manhattan and partially in fictitious suburb Garden Hills, New York, Counselor offers a gritty insight into modern day disillusionment, filled to the brim with compelling characters, edgy metaphors and vivid imagery

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dystopian science fiction classic set in a world where women have no rights, the patriarchy sends a covert female agent to take down the resistance. In the second entry of the Native Tongue trilogy, the time has come for Láadan—the secret language created to resist an oppressive patriarchy—to empower womankind worldwide. To expand the language’s reach, female linguists translate the Bible into Láadan, and a group of Roman Catholic nuns are tasked to spread the language. But when outraged priests detect their sabotage, they send a double agent to infiltrate and destroy the movement from the inside… Originally published in the 1980s, the Native Tongue trilogy is a classic dystopian tale: a testament to the power of language and women's collective action. “This angry feminist text is also an exemplary experiment in speculative fiction, deftly and implacably pursuing both a scientific hypothesis and an ideological hypothesis through all their social, moral, and emotional implications.”—Ursula K. Le Guin “Less well known than The Handmaid's Tale but just as apocalyptic in their vision…Native Tongue along with its sequel The Judas Rose . . . record female tribulations in a world where…women have no public rights at all. Elgin's heroines do, however, have one set of weapons—words of their own.”—Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar, New York Times Book Review “A pioneering feminist experiment.”—Literary Hub “A welcome reminder of the feminist legacies of science fiction…Explores the power of speech, agency, and subversion in a work that is as gripping, troubling, and meaningful today as it has ever been.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
