Book excerpt: In fishes, differences in egg incubation, water temperature, and substrate can have a significant impact on phenotypic development. This is particularly relevant during the first year of life when growth rate peaks and influences an individual's life history trajectory. In the present study, Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, were reared in different environments for approximately one year. In the first year, sturgeon were reared in 3 temperature regimes (with or without substrate) that mimicked hatchery conditions or river temperature profiles. In the second year, embryos were incubated in MacDonald jars or adhered to substrate and newly hatched larvae were reared in different thermal environments (16, 18 and 20°C) for two weeks during the first month post-hatch. All treatments were then transferred to a common garden set-up where tanks were fed by river water at ambient temperature and natural light cycles. Fish were deprived of food when water temperature reached 1.5°C, then food was re-introduced when water temperature exceeded 2°C, approximately 4.5 months later. Yolksac volumes, body length and mass were assessed during both years. In the first year, there were differences in yolk sac absorption between substrate treatments in the first two weeks post-hatch, and differences in larval length between temperature treatments following the overwintering. In the second year, red muscle fibre area and myonuclear counts were assessed and volitional downward swimming and forced escape responses were tested. Growth rate in the first three months of life was highest in the 20°C group of fish but converged in all treatments during winter. Growth rate in fish raised in warmer waters during early life once again exceeded cooler water treatments post-winter, suggesting growth phenotype was fixed in early life, showing little phenotypic plasticity, and was temperature dependent. Thus, increased growing temperature during early life history results in development of a fast-growing phenotype post the first winter. Overall, there was an absence of significant differences between results for muscle fibre area and myonuclear counts between incubation and temperature treatments and the presence of significant differences between time points indicating a strong evolutionary pressure to maintain plasticity in muscle structure and swimming performance.

Book excerpt: Modern North American sturgeons and paddlefish are the result of 100 million years of evolution. Once an integral part of aboriginal culture, their numbers were decimated by overfishing and habitat destruction during the past two centuries. This book details the extensive science aimed at helping these remarkable species recover from the brink of extinction, and describes the historical, biological, and ecological importance of North American sturgeon and paddlefish. The text is enhanced by photographs and detailed line drawings. This comprehensive volume will be an invaluable resource for researchers, educators, and consultants, in academic and government settings, who work to further scientific understanding of these fishes. No other single compilation has documented current information in such detail.

Significant gaps exist in understanding lake sturgeon in the system as well as the methods needed to properly monitor and assess them. My research had three main goals: (1) investigate movements and habitat use of lake sturgeon in the Lake Champlain basin, (2) develop a method to estimate lake sturgeon abundance using sonar technology, and (3) test an alternative method for aging lake sturgeon. One of the primary information gaps for lake sturgeon in Lake Champlain is an understanding of the movements and habitat use of multiple life stages. I used acoustic telemetry to describe seasonal movement patterns and distribution of adult and juvenile lake sturgeon and to quantify the spatial overlap between these life stages. We found that juvenile and adult home ranges overlapped in shallow ( 10 m) water in the summer and fall. During the winter, adults remained in shallow water and juveniles moved to deep-water ( 25 m) overwintering sites. These results identified important areas for lake sturgeon and indicated that there are seasonal differences in habitat use between life stages. I also used acoustic telemetry to describe adult lake sturgeon movement patterns during the spawning period and to investigate environmental drivers of these movements in the Winooski River. River discharge, temperature, the magnitude and direction of the change in temperature (3-day lag), and time of day were significant factors in describing upstream movements. Adult lake sturgeon displayed general movement patterns that included a single run upstream, upstream and downstream movements throughout the river, or multiple runs made up the entire length of the spawning tributary to the spawning site. An understanding of the movements during the spawning period was key in the method I developed to estimate lake sturgeon abundance. To estimate abundance of lake sturgeon spawning in the Winooski River, I used acoustic telemetry data from adult lake sturgeon to estimate observation probability of the sonar and the probability that a lake sturgeon had been seen previously during the season. Using a Bayesian integrated model, I combined these parameters with counts from a dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) to estimate abundances each year: 110 (47 -- 229 CI) in 2017, 133 (79 -- 242 CI) in 2018, and 99 (51 -- 220 CI). The results of this work represent the first estimate of abundance for spawning lake sturgeon in a Lake Champlain tributary, and will be key to tracking progress towards lake sturgeon recovery moving forward. Age data in long-lived species such as lake sturgeon can point to signs of successful recruitment and recovery. I investigated use of the second marginal pectoral fin ray as an alternative, less invasive method for estimating ages of lake sturgeon. The variability of age estimates among different readers and fin structures indicated that the second fin ray may provide some utility to age juvenile lake sturgeon but is not a viable substitute for estimating ages of adult lake sturgeon. These results provide valuable information to managers looking to gain essential age data while also decreasing the impact of handling endangered lake sturgeon.

Book excerpt: The biology of the Siberian sturgeon, Acipenser baerii Brandt 1869, has become a very attractive subject of investigation for biologists since the 1980s. This volume 1 is part of a two-volume set devoted to the species, the second of which focuses on farming. The present volume is divided into three parts: Biology and ecology, Biology and physiology of reproduction, and Ecophysiology, i.e. adaptation to the environment. The first part addresses a broad range of topics, such as: the ecology, including a new approach to species-specificity, a new insight on the mineralization of vertebral elements, two approaches to sex determination, transposable elements in the gonads, early ontogeny, olfaction and gustation, nutrition and swimming. The second part includes neurochemical and anatomical descriptions of the central nervous system and an updated version of the oogenesis, the characteristics of both sperm and spermatozoa, and a synthesis on gonadal steroids (synthesis, plasmatic levels and biological activities). In turn, the third part reveals how the physiology of the species changes depending on environmental factors such as oxygen, ammonia, and nitrite. Some fundamental consequences of ammonia are developed (sublethal and lethal levels, effects on gill epithelium and haematology, acid-base balance, on AA and adenyl nucleotides levels in plasma, brain and muscle tissue). In addition, the book includes two methodological chapters dealing with fish dorsal aortic cannulation and respiration physiology.

Book excerpt: Describes a field study designed to establish seasonal habitat use relationships for adult lake sturgeon on the Groundhog River, north-eastern Ontario. The study was conducted in 1996 and examined lake sturgeon habitat use during spring and autumn seasons, representing high and low water conditions respectively. Fish were netted in randomly chosen locations in the study area, upstream and downstream of the Camus Rapids, and were measured, weighed, marked, and released. Catch, meristic, and habitat parameter data were entered into an electronic data base and analyzed using the SYSTAT program. Results presented include sturgeon length frequency distributions, substrate and depth preferences exhibited, and stream velocity preferences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the fishes, a remarkably wide range of biological adaptations to diverse habitats has evolved. As well as living in the conventional habitats of lakes, ponds, rivers, rock pools and the open sea, fish have solved the problems of life in deserts, in the deep sea, in the cold antarctic, and in warm waters of high alkalinity or of low oxygen. Along with these adaptations, we find the most impressive specializations of morphology, physiology and behaviour. For example we can marvel at the high-speed swimming of the marlins, sailfish and warm-blooded tunas, air-breathing in catfish and lung fish, parental care in the mouth-brooding cichlids and viviparity in many sharks and toothcarps. Moreover, fish are of considerable importance to the survival of the human species in the form of nutritious, delicious and diverse food. Rational exploitation and management of our global stocks of fishes must rely upon a detailed and precise insight of their biology. The Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series aims to present timely volumes reviewing important aspects of fish biology. Most volumes will be of interest to research workers in biology, zoology, ecology and physiology but an additional aim is for the books to be accessible to a wide spectrum of non-specialist readers ranging from undergraduates and postgraduates to those with an intrerest in industrial and commercial aspects of fish and fisheries.
