Book excerpt: A monumental collection by one of America's greatest authors of children's literature — and the launch of a new imprint, ReLIT, that republishes lost classics for a modern readership! Virginia Hamilton (1936-2002) was not only one of the most magnificent writers who ever lived — winning honors such as the Newbery Medal, Newbery Honor, National Book Award, and the Coretta Scott King Award for classics like The House of Dies Drear, The People Could Fly, M. C. Higgins the Great, and Her Stories — she was one of the greatest thinkers we ever had on children's literature. Born to a family of storytellers, she wove into her books and thoughts a deep concern with memory, tradition, and generational legacy, especially as they helped define the lives of African Americans from the days of slavery onward. Hamilton described her work as ''liberation literature.'' This landmark book — since fallen out of print and now lovingly restored and repackaged in this gorgeous edition — brings together her essays, speeches, and interviews into one thought-provoking, incisive, inspiring whole. Presented in a high quality flexibound binding, Liberation Literature also features a foreword by Laura Pegram, founder of Kweli; an introduction by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, the "mother of" multicultural children's literature; and a full-color frontispiece portrait of Virginia Hamilton, illustrated by Caldecott Medalists Leo & Diane Dillon. It is a must-have for anyone interested in writing, the history of African American representation, children's literature, and literature overall.

Book excerpt: Heidegger has often been reproached for his alleged neglect of practical issues, specifically his "inability" to propose or articulate an ethics or politics. This book investigates the extent to which Heidegger's thought can be read as a crucial resource for practical philosophy and the articulation of an ethos for our time. Leading scholars from around the world offer a sustained and intensive focus on Heidegger's thought of praxis, working through such motifs as freedom, the possibility of ethics, the political, responsibility, community, nihilism, technology and the contemporary ethos, among others. Ultimately, this volume reveals the practical senses of ontology, and the ontological senses of praxis by exhibiting the practicality of Being itself.

Book excerpt: The classic, partly fictional travelogue through late-nineteenth-century Europe by the great American satirist and author of Innocents Abroad. Based on true events—embellished with fictional tales and a made-up travel partner—Mark Twain’s A Tramp Abroad chronicles his meandering journey through Germany, the French and Swiss Alps, and Northern Italy. Attempting to make the trip by foot, Twain ventures down the Neckar river by raft, ascends Mont Blanc by telescope, and experiences European life with his usual penetrating wit, infectious curiosity, and timeless humor. Along the way, Twain offers his thoughts on the role of “The Portier” in European hotels, a vivid description of “Heidelberg Castle,” and his unvarnished opinion of “The Awful German Language,” as well as a few tall tales, such as “The Man Who Put Up at Gadsby’s.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three novels by the great American satirist transport readers across the ocean to Europe and back in time to Camelot and the Hundred Years’ War. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court: A supervisor at a firearms factory in Hartford, Connecticut, Hank Morgan inexplicably finds himself transported back in time to Camelot. Worse still, he is brought before the Round Table and sentenced to burn at the stake. Will Hank die at the hands of King Arthur’s knights, or can his Yankee ingenuity save him? A seminal work of time travel fiction, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is also an enduring comedic classic. A Tramp Abroad: Based on true events, Mark Twain’s travelogue through late nineteenth-century Europe is embellished with fictional tales and a made-up travel partner. Wandering mostly on foot, Twain meanders through Germany, the French and Swiss Alps, and Northern Italy. He also ventures down the Neckar river by raft, ascends Mont Blanc by telescope, and experiences European life with his usual penetrating wit, infectious curiosity, and timeless humor. Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc: Twain’s final novel—and, by his own account, his best—is an imagined memoir of Joan of Arc. Beginning with her humble childhood in the French village of Domrémy, it recounts her visions of Archangels and her taking control of the French army at the age of seventeen. From her victory over the English at Orléans and her Bloodless March to Rheims, the story progresses finally to Joan’s tragic defeat and execution by the English.

Book excerpt: CHAPTER I [The Knighted Knave of Bergen] One day it occurred to me that it had been many years since the world had been afforded the spectacle of a man adventurous enough to undertake a journey through Europe on foot. After much thought, I decided that I was a person fitted to furnish to mankind this spectacle. So I determined to do it. This was in March, 1878. I looked about me for the right sort of person to accompany me in the capacity of agent, and finally hired a Mr. Harris for this service. It was also my purpose to study art while in Europe. Mr. Harris was in sympathy with me in this. He was as much of an enthusiast in art as I was, and not less anxious to learn to paint. I desired to learn the German language; so did Harris. Toward the middle of April we sailed in the Holsatia, Captain Brandt, and had a very pleasant trip, indeed. After a brief rest at Hamburg, we made preparations for a long pedestrian trip southward in the soft spring weather, but at the last moment we changed the program, for private reasons, and took the express-train. We made a short halt at Frankfort-on-the-Main, and found it an interesting city. I would have liked to visit the birthplace of Gutenburg, but it could not be done, as no memorandum of the site of the house has been kept. So we spent an hour in the Goethe mansion instead. The city permits this house to belong to private parties, instead of gracing and dignifying herself with the honor of possessing and protecting it. Frankfort is one of the sixteen cities which have the distinction of being the place where the following incident occurred. Charlemagne, while chasing the Saxons (as he said), or being chased by them (as they said), arrived at the bank of the river at dawn, in a fog. The enemy were either before him or behind him; but in any case he wanted to get across, very badly. He would have given anything for a guide, but none was to be had. Presently he saw a deer, followed by her young, approach the water. He watched her, judging that she would seek a ford, and he was right. She waded over, and the army followed. So a great Frankish victory or defeat was gained or avoided; and in order to commemorate the episode, Charlemagne commanded a city to be built there, which he named Frankfort—the ford of the Franks. None of the other cities where this event happened were named for it. This is good evidence that Frankfort was the first place it occurred at. Frankfort has another distinction—it is the birthplace of the German alphabet; or at least of the German word for alphabet—buchstaben. They say that the first movable types were made on birch sticks—buchstabe—hence the name. Book excerpt: I'm enlightened and awed by the environment around me, which ignites my flo-etry which forms my art of writing. If God gives me the ability to play with words and create imagery why not share it with the world? I give you my poetry. It's my heart, my passion and my life. I want you to indulge in it as if you have nowhere to go. Cry as you never cried, and over think and under analyze as if you question but know the answer. The different poems and short stories that you will be reading from this book comes from past experiences, viewed situation and or things that just came to mind. I find that you will enjoy them some better than others because they touch on real life situations and play with emotions. Some of them will have you testifying while reading or shouting while dreaming. Either way it goes they are for your enjoyment.
