Book excerpt: This book, which is based on many true events, is suspenseful, morbid, heartbreaking, and occasionally comical. From the first chapter where she loses her virginity in a devastating way that she brought on herself completely, to wanting nothing more than to run from her fears after being mentally violated by a sex-craved man whore. When she finally gets away from it all and moves to college, she goes into a deep depression realizing that she was sexually assaulted, perhaps even raped in a way the first time she had sex. Paranoia creeping up slowly, but dangerously into her sane state of mind has her on edge. And then, one lonely night walking past the campus parking garage, an event occurs that entwines her life with a family that has been shredded by the same man that will destroy her existence. Part two starts several years after part one, and the main character becomes her own detective when everyone who keeps working on her case is disappearing or committing suicide. The endangerments she gets forced into become real when she has to defeat her own inner turmoil to save a stranger who means more to her than her own life.

Book excerpt: Author Chan Mei Yuet's life began in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but when her parents separate, Yuet and her mother return to the little town of Muar. Due to the increasing pressure of a new, unhealthy baby and the shame of giving birth out of wedlock, Yuet is sent to live with her grandmother. In an attempt to escape the pain of being unloved and unwanted by her family, Yuet begins traveling throughout Europe. Yuet's life improves significantly when she meets a young French man named Jean-Pierre. Despite their communication problems and cultural differences, their relationship blossoms. The couple is soon talking marriage and sharing a flat in Cagnes-Sur-Mer. The turmoil in Yuet's life is compounded further by her future in-laws' constant and malicious intrusions and the insistence that she abort her baby or face deportation. However, the birth of Christel begins to fill the empty void created by Yuet's dreadful childhood and current circumstances and allows the wounds of her adolescence to begin healing. She now has a new focus in life: the joy of motherhood. Sweet Innocence chronicles the life of globe-trotting author Chan Mei Yuet, who shares her emotional story--from a life filled with bitterness to one filled with joy.

Download or read book Tastes We Live By written by Marco Bagli and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taste is considered one of the lowest sensory modalities, and the most difficult to express in language. Recently, an increasing body of research in perception language and in Food Studies has been sparkling new interest and new perspectives on the importance of this sense. Merging anthropology, evolutionary physiology and philosophy, this book investigates the language of Taste in English, and its relationship with our embodied minds. In the first part of the book, the author explores the semantic dimensions of Taste terms with a usage-based approach. With the application of experimental protocols, Bagli enquires their possible organization in a radial network and calculates the Salience index of gustatory terms in both American and British English. The second part of the book is an overview of the metaphorical extensions that motivate the polysemy of Taste terms, with the aid of corpus analysis methods and various texts. This book is the first to review systematically and in a usage-based perspective the role of the sensory domain of Taste in English, showing a more complicated picture and suggesting that its under-representation and difficulty of encoding does not correspond to lack of importance.
