The combination of new dwarfing rootstocks with high-density training systems leads to earlier production. But growers need to consider soil fertility, scion choice and training systems when choosing rootstocks. Here are some guidelines that can help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unfortunately, no one rootstock can satisfy all the requirements for consistently producing copious amounts of large, firm fruit of premium quality. Growers are strongly advised to consider carefully the effects of each specific rootstock/scion combination as a function of environmental and cultural practices when replanting an orchard (Tables 1 and 2). Selecting the proper rootstock depends not only on the management skills of the grower but also on the scion cultivar, training system and site selected for the orchard. Furthermore, it is often possible for semi-dwarfing cherry rootstocks to be highly productive. However, when these rootstocks are combined with productive scion cultivars, it can lead to an over-cropping situation. In addition, productive scion/rootstock combinations are only recommended for fertile soils. For more information about the attributes of specific cultivars, please see PNW 604, "Sweet Cherry Cultivars for the Fresh Market." Semi-dwarfing rootstocks do, however, have major economic advantages. A recent study conducted among several Oregon growers (Seavert and Long, 2007) found that growers could recover their entire cost of establishment in eight years with a high-density orchard on productive rootstocks, compared to fifteen years for a standard-density orchard on 'Mazzard' rootstock. The development of these new semi-dwarfing, precocious rootstocks has been almost as significant to the sweet cherry industry as to the apple industry several decades ago. When compared to 'Mazzard', 'Colt' and even 'Mahaleb', size-controlling rootstocks have allowed sweet cherry growers an opportunity to plant high-density, pedestrian orchards that afford high early yields, easier management and a safer and more productive working environment."--Summary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the biotechnology of all the major fruit and nut species. Since the very successful first edition of this book in 2004, there has been rapid progress for many fruit and nut species in cell culture, genomics and genetic transformation, especially for citrus and papaya. This book covers both these cutting-edge technologies and regeneration pathways, protoplast culture, in vitro mutagenesis, ploidy manipulation techniques that have been applied to a wider range of species. Three crop species, Diospyros kaki (persimmon), Punica granatum (pomegranate) and Eriobotrya japonica (loquat) are included for the first time. The chapters are organized by plant family to make it easier to make comparisons and exploitation of work with related species. Each chapter discusses the plant family and the related wild species for 38 crop species, and has colour illustrations. It is essential for scientists and post graduate students who are engaged in the improvement of fruit, nut and plantation crops.

Book excerpt: Peach is a highly valuable temperate fruit crop with significant consumer demand and nutraceutical benefits. This book provides comprehensive and up-to-date coverage on sustainable production processes for peach and nectarine. The latter is a natural mutation of peach that lacks fuzzy skin. It includes fundamental information to help reduce production risks for growers, improve fruit quality, and increase potential market returns, whilst addressing current emerging issues such as climate change and shifting global and regional production practices. This is an essential resource for students and researchers in horticulture, as well as professionals in pomology including fruit growers, consultants and extension specialists, and cold storage and transportation managers.

Book excerpt: The sweet cherry is one of the most popular of temperate fruit crops with consumers and is grown commercially in more than 40 countries of the world, in temperate, Mediterranean, subtropical and arid regions of all continents. The sour cherry is cultivated in fewer countries, mainly in Europe and the USA, and is used mainly in processed cherry products. Until recently, horticultural improvement of cherries as a commercial crop has been slow, and major production problems such as bird damage, rain-induced cracking, and bacterial diseases, have remained. However, in the last 25 years, major developments have occurred. New improved varieties of sweet cherry have been bred which have larger fruit, are more disease resistant and set fruit more reliably. Improved sour cherry varieties have also been bred and mechanised systems of harvesting introduced. New dwarfing rootstocks are now being released. This book provides a comprehensive review of all of these topics, and many more. It covers all aspects of the botany, production and uses of sweet and sour cherries, and represents a definitive reference work for students and research workers in horticulture as well as professional fruit growers.
