Download or read book Swansea University written by Sam Blaxland and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swansea University: Campus and Community in a Post-War World, 1945–2020 marks Swansea University’s centenary. It is a study of post- Second World War academic and social change in Britain and its universities, as well as an exploration of shifts in youth culture and the way in which higher education institutions have interacted with people and organisations in their regions. It covers a range of important themes and topics, including architectural developments, international scholars, the changing behaviours of students, protest and politics, and the multi-layered relationships that are formed between academics, young people and the wider communities of which they are a part. Unlike most institutional histories, it takes a ‘bottom-up’ approach and focuses on the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of people like students and non-academic staff who are normally sidelined in such accounts. As it does so, it utilises a large collection of oral history testimonies collected specifically for this book; and, throughout, it explores how formative, paradoxical and unexpected university life can be.

Book Synopsis Fight and Flight by : Georgia Burdett
Download or read book Fight and Flight written by Georgia Burdett and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no published collected criticism on Ron Berry. This is a unique selling point. Berry did not receive the critical acclaim he deserved in his lifetime. This is the first attempt to address this apparent neglect. Berry’s work is hugely relevant to the study of modern Wales, as it straddles the industrial and post-industrial period. His environmental writings and concerns were so progressive that they were perhaps wasted upon his original readership.

Book Synopsis Gender and Social Justice in Wales by : Nickie Charles
Download or read book Gender and Social Justice in Wales written by Nickie Charles and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses how policies developed by the National Assembly for Wales are affecting gender inequalities and investigates whether they are having an impact on social justice for women in Wales. In 1999 the first elections to devolved governments took place in Scotland and Wales. In Wales this resulted in 40 per cent of Assembly Members being women. In 2003 this proportion increased to 50 per cent which makes the National Assembly for Wales ‘the first legislative body with equal numbers of men and women in the world’ (“The Guardian”, 3/5/03). This new gender balance of political representatives is a significant change in the gendering of political institutions and this, together with the creation of a new tier of government, has the potential to create new opportunities for the development of social policies which address gender and other social inequalities. Focusing on distinct policy domains, this book explores gender politics in a devolved Wales. Each chapter investigates a particular aspect of social policy, exploring the way it has developed since devolution and the extent to which considerations of gender and social justice for women are central to this development. The empirical chapters which form the core of the book are situated theoretically and politically by the first chapter which discusses how gender and social justice can be theorised and explores devolution and its relation to gender politics in Wales.
