Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in a new humorous romance mystery series by Denise Grover Swank. A month ago, I quit my job and finally left my commitment-phobe boyfriend, then moved back to my hometown of Cockamamie, Tennessee, to take care of my newly widowed Aunt Deidre, who has dementia. Somehow, I've stumbled my way into a murder investigation-like literally-and now I'm a suspect. Okay, so I told off the newly deceased old fart, but that doesn't mean I'm the killer. And the idiot detective? Sure, he's insanely hot, but it turns out he's the grandson of my grandmother's nemesis. I'm sure he's holding that against me. So now my life's a complicated mess. I need to clear my name, make sure my aunt doesn't wander off again, and find the killer since the Cockamamie taxpayers seem to be wasting their money on Detective Langley's salary. Oh, and I really need a job.

Book Synopsis Swank Or 'wheels' by : Ian James Badger
Download or read book Swank Or 'wheels' written by Ian James Badger and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To best utilize the capabilities of colonial horses and cope with rough terrain, novel or unconventional forms of harnessing and driving flourished in Australia. The swift and pervasive adoption of American-style vehicles from the 1850s is charted and linked to fundamental attitudinal changes within society, particularly the development of ideals of democracy and of a growing sense of Australian-ness. The clash between status and utility was finally decided in favour of utility, though this was not manifest in any new local design, but rather through the adoption and further development of an import, the American buggy. It is argued that the utilitarian approach towards personal transport influenced the early and widespread adoption of the automobile in Australia, while the particular success of American automobiles may be in part attributed to the successful assimilation of American horse-drawn vehicles and associated technologies.
Book Synopsis Chicago Rink Rats: The Roller Capital in Its Heyday by : Tom Russo
Download or read book Chicago Rink Rats: The Roller Capital in Its Heyday written by Tom Russo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1950, roller skating had emerged as the number-one participatory sport in America. Ironically, the war years launched the Golden Age of Roller Skating. Soldiers serving overseas pleaded for skates along with their usual requests for cigarettes and letters from home. Stateside, skating uplifted morale and kept war factory workers exercising. By the end of the decade, five thousand rinks operated across the country. Its epicenter: Chicago! And no one was left behind! The Blink Bats, a group of Braille Center skaters, held their own at the huge Broadway Armory rink. Meanwhile, the Swank drew South Side crowds to its knee-action floor and stocked jukebox. Eighteen celebrated rinks are now gone, but rinks that remain honor the traditions of the sport's glory years. Author Tom Russo scoured newspaper archives and interviewed skaters of the roller capital's heyday to reveal the enduring legacy of Chicago's rink rats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the keepers meet for the first time, the gate will be opened. Two little rules have kept me safe since my mother died protecting me: always trust your instincts and forget everything about the curse. But when I accidentally activate an ancient catastrophe I’ve spent my life running from, breaking the seal on the gates of hell and ripping the lost colony of Roanoke back through time and getting the attention of a vengeful god in the process, rules go out the window. I can barely keep myself alive, and now somehow, it’s my responsibility to save all of humanity? We’re screwed. My only hope is to learn everything I can—everything I should have already known—from my fellow Curse Keeper—Collin-effing-Dailey. Collin can lay on the charm when he wants to, but he’s made it clear he’s not happy I’m a novice at all of this. Unfortunately, I feel a pull to him I can’t chalk up to supernatural powers. My instincts beg me not to trust Collin, but I’m out of other options. We have seven days to save the world, and the clock starts now.
