Traumatic brain injury and hemorrhage are the most common causes of early death, whereas complications such as infections, (multi-)organ failure and “persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome” (PICS) represent relevant factors for late adverse outcomes. Pre- and intra-hospital diagnostic and therapeutic standard operating procedures have been shown to beneficially influence posttraumatic outcome. However, development of patient-specific diagnostic and therapeutic strategies remains challenging due to uncertainties regarding the assessment of the individual risk profile. Furthermore, the relevance of prevention and rehabilitation measures to avoid unfavorable long-term consequences of trauma is not fully elucidated. With this Special Issue, we wanted to reflect the current knowledge about the pathomechanisms associated with the impact of severe injury and its consequences for the further clinical course on the one hand, and to point out new insights in regard to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches on the other hand. Furthermore, interesting aspects for future directions for the care of severely injured patients are illustrated.

Book excerpt: Success in shoulder arthroplastic surgery is not necessarily dependent only on the principle of construction of a prosthetic device, nor on the way this device is implanted or fixed to the bony interface, but more so on the understanding and handling of the soft tissues surrounding the articulation. Based on their experience in basic anatomy and function, the editors of this book were able to develop a prosthetic device which can take into account individual anatomical variations in each patient, making a successful outcome of surgery much more predictable. This must-have for any shoulder surgeon not only informs on the current state-of-the-art, but also provides an understanding of what advances can be achieved with innovative thinking in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

The 56 textbooks together make up an electronically stored corpus of 1,437,474 words, which was evaluated from three points of view. were compared with the corresponding frequency band in an 18 million word corpus compiled at the University of Birmingham in the course of the work on the COBUILD dictionary. This comparison reveals clear differences between the two corpora, with the textbooks containing a much higher proportion of concrete everyday words than the COBUILD texts and a lack of many of the common abstract words need for an understanding of the language of the news media. of certain of the linguistic criteria for text typology suggested by D.Biber. With the help of these criteria, it was possible to show that the textbooks tend to be interactive and to have situated content and reported style, while the COBUILD texts seem to be edited, to have abstract content and more immediate style. in terms of the linguistic differences between British and American English. It was found that the linguistic orientation of both corpora is overwhelmingly British. described above, among them a list of the 9330 textbook lemmas with a fequency of 5 or more. Each lemma appears with its frequencies from the textbook and the COBUILD corpora and a difference coefficient indicating its relative frequency in the two corpora.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimally invasive surgery has become a common term in visceral as well as gynecologic surgery. It has almost evolved into its own surgical speciality over the past 20 years. Today, being firmly established in every subspeciality of visceral surgery, it is now no longer a distinct skillset, but a fixed part of the armamentarium of surgical options available. In every indication, the advantages of a minimally invasive approach include reduced intraoperative blood loss, less postoperative pain, and shorter rehabilitation times, as well as a marked reduction of overall and surgical postoperative morbidity. In the advent of modern oncologic treatment algorithms, these effects not only lower the immediate impact that an operation has on the patient, but also become important key steps in reducing the side-effects of surgery. Thus, they enable surgery to become a module in modern multi-disciplinary cancer treatment, which blends into multimodular treatment options at different times and prolongs and widens the possibilities available to cancer patients. In this quickly changing environment, the requirement to learn and refine not only open surgical but also different minimally invasive techniques on high levels deeply impact modern surgical training pathways. The use of modern elearning tools and new and praxis-based surgical training possibilities have been readily integrated into modern surgical education, which persists throughout the whole surgical career of modern gynecologic and visceral surgery specialists.
