Book excerpt: This novella-length collection of Erehwynan Idylls offers readers an indulgent and weird agglomeration of randy boys and revelations, as the embodiment of a small breeze--actually the gene-spliced child of the gods Zephyros and Ares--flirts and seduces fleshlings on a terraformed future Mars. Hal Duncan's acclaimed style is both alethic and erudite and offers a fresh telling of philosophical musings and classic Greek mythology for 21st century readers.""This densely lyrical novella combines science fiction, Greek mythology, botany, philosophy, and erotica into a resonant whole..." - Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Book 2 of The Age of Aether After years in exile on Earth, Jack Branham finally returned to Mars. Now agents of the Tharsis Company have abandoned him to die in the ruins of the ancient Martian city Odusar, while anarchists have kidnapped the beautiful Charlotte, the woman he loves. Jack must survive duels between mighty airships, attacks by Martian assassins, and the terrible dust storms that sweep across the face of the entire planet to follow their trail into the uncharted wilds of southern Mars. There, hidden inside a ring of lofty mountains, he discovers a lost civilization on the shores of the mysterious Silver Sea. In the magnificent city of Kor Vosheth, he must defeat a cabal of priests and princes to save the throne of the young queen who holds his only hope of resuming his quest--or of dooming it forever. The Age of Aether takes place in a universe where the social revolutions of the 18th Century never happened. Mighty airships fill the skies while Cavorite-hulled aetherships ply the airless voids between the planets. From the torrid jungles of Venus to the frigid deserts of Mars, the British Empire has truly become "the Empire on which the sun never sets." The crowned heads of Europe share power with the immensely wealthy chartered companies created to exploit the wealth of the Solar System, while anarchist and republican terrorists try to stir up revolution in the colonial territories. Political activists and dissidents are shipped offworld to work alongside criminal transportees in the company towns of Mars and Venus. The Empires of Mexico and Brazil dominate the Americas, while Japan is a rising force in the East, and from the deep fastness of Nix Olympica the Martian High Emperor reigns over the remnants of his slowly dying planet.

Book excerpt: HiRISE is the most powerful camera ever sent to another planet, showing us Mars in astonishing detail. Featuring an outstanding and never-before-published collection of HiRISE high-resolution color images with explanatory captions in twenty-four languages, this book offers a unique volume produced from an active NASA mission. Mars enthusiasts will appreciate these perfect snapshots of our current understanding of Mars, with soon-to-be classic pictures that have come to define our vision of the Red Planet. These images and their interpretations will be held as a yardstick for future exploration as we learn more about the surface and geologic processes of the fourth planet from the Sun. With tantalizing and artistic glimpses at actively eroding slopes, impact craters, strange polar landscapes, avalanches, and even spectacular descent pictures of probes like the Phoenix Lander and the Mars Science Laboratory, we see what researchers are seeing. Through vivid and beautiful images, this book underscores the need for such a camera on future orbiters, especially as more landing missions are planned. Mars: The Pristine Beauty of the Red Planet provides a stunning keepsake of one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments in space travel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mars is the Solar System's other wild, wet, water world. Long believed to have become cold, dead, and dry aeons ago, we now having striking new proof, not only that Mars was a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet's surface. This compelling new evidence may well boost the chances of a manned mission to Mars sooner, rather than later. The discovery is also forcing a complete rethink about the mechanisms of global planetary change. What does the drastic turn of events on Mars mean for Earth's climate system? Could life have thrived on Mars very recently, and might it survive today in short-term hibernation? Will humans soon be capable of living off the natural resources that Martian hydrogeology has naturally offered us? Will humans one day be capable of setting off the same chain of events that nature has repeatedly triggered to set off warm, wet episodes on Mars? How could Mars be terraformed into a New World? (And should we even contemplate doing so?) This book offers a visually beautiful, scientifically detailed and accurate presentation of the evidence that has forced this new revolution in Mars science. From the reviews:"Long believed to have been cold, dead and dry for eons, there is now striking new proof that not only was Mars a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet's surface. In this absorbing, beautifully illustrated book, Kargel describes the still-unfolding revolution in our knowledge about the Red Planet and how future concepts of Mars will continue to be molded by new revelations of four billion years of geology". (LUNAR AND PLANETARY INFORMATION BULLETIN)nbsp; From the reviews:" This exhaustive, effusive, and enthusiastic book conveys the excitement of frontline scientific research about as well as can be done. Kargel describes himself as a member of the "Tucson Mafia," a group of scientists in full rebellion against the "Mars Establishment" and its belief in a cold, dry Mars. His ideas are presented in meticulous detail, supported by hundreds of superb pictures, many taken by the author himself. Some--perhaps most--of his ideas are controversial and may ultimately prove to be wrong, as he himself often points out, but we have to applaud the (sometimes career-risking) courage with which he has pursued them. In spite of the large amount of rather technical information, the reader is swept along by the author's enthusiasm in conveying it and ability to integrate it into a coherent vision. The reader also learns about the process of science: the thrill of having a new idea and discussing it with others at conferences and cafes (and bars), the drudgery often involved in pursuing the idea, the perils of the formal review process for publications and grant applications, and the roles played by personality conflicts and power politics. Summing Up: Enthusiastically recommended. All levels. "nbsp;(T. Barker, CHOICE, March 2005)

Urides presents a detailed description of the Martian civilization, including their customs, technologies, and political structures. While his claims remain controversial, Urides' account offers a unique glimpse into the imaginations of early 20th century science fiction writers. Book excerpt: After a disagreement with her project leader, Gretchen Blake finds herself blackballed from the archaeology field. Around the same time, her husband declines to renew their marriage contract. Alone, with money a growing concern, she accepts a job from MarsVantage to decipher odd symbols in a remote Martian cave. If she can correctly interpret them, MarsVantage will gain access to a cavern filled with an energy source that could dramatically improve their circumstances while Gretchen could reclaim her position on Earth. Interplanetary, MarsVantage's Earth-based rival, will stop at nothing--industrial espionage, bribery, theft, and even murder--to keep Gretchen and MarsVantage from succeeding. Before ever stepping on to the Martian plain, Gretchen finds herself caught in the middle, wanting only to finish the job and return to Earth. As time goes on, she discovers something more valuable than energy--she finds intriguing alien information that could forever alter her future as well as MarsVantage's and quite possibly humanity's. Can Gretchen secure the alien technology? Will she stay on Mars, a place she finally feels like she belongs, and pursue a budding relationship with her MarsVantage project leader, Frank?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mars: Sinus Titanum; November, 1894 This book is the result of a special study of the planet made during the last Opposition, at an observatory put up for the purpose of get ting as good air as practicable, at Flagstaff, Arizona. A steady atmosphere is essential to the study of planetary detail: size of instru ment being a very secondary matter. A large instrument in poor air will not begin to show what a smaller one in good air will. When this is recognized, as it eventually will be, it will be come the fashion to put up observatories Where they may see rather than be seen. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ...of the invisible. To see indirectly what cannot be seen direct is the province of the spectroscope. The spectroscope consists of a prism or train of prisms which disperse white light into a rainbow-tinted ribbon known as the spectrum, made up of rays of diflerent wave-length from violet at one end to red at the other. Now it is a property of a gas, through which light passes, to absorb certain of the rays peculiar to itself, and so form dark lines across the spectrum at those points. Most of the lines thus observed in the solar spectrum come from gases in the photosphere of the sun, but there are certain others which arise in our own atmospheric envelope and are called telluric lines in consequence. Such are the oxygen and water-vapor bands. If now another planet, such as Mars, possessed either of these gases in its atmosphere, the light reflected from it should disclose the fact by deepening these bands. Much was hoped from the spectroscope on this point. Up to and beyond the time when the lectures were written, of which this book is the outcome, the spectroscope had not proved itself a sufficiently delicate in strument to give other than an uncertain answer on the presence or absence of water-vapor on Mars. Huggins, Vogel, Janssen, all thought to see evidence of it there; Campbell, with more accurate instruments, could find none. Nor could any be obtained under still more favorable conditions of air and instrument at Flagstaff. The reason for inconclusion, though unsuspected at the time, lay in the position of the bands in the spectrum produced by water-vapor. These begin, indeed, in the yellow, are present in the orange and light red, but are broadest and darkest in the partially visible deep red and in the invisible spectrum beyond...
