Book excerpt: Although most agree that Lean Six Sigma is here to stay, they also agree that learning how to sustain the results seems problematic at best and unattainable at worst. Reverting to the old way of doing things is inevitable if sustainability measures are not a part of the methodology. Currently there are no standard resource on how to be sustainable or on using statistical techniques and practices. Until now. Sustainability: Utilizing Lean Six Sigma Techniques not only examines how to use particular lean six sigma tools, but how to sustain results that make companies profitable with continuous improvement. The book demonstrates how to use the Six Sigma methodology to make process-focused decisions that will achieve the goals of sustainability and allow organizations to gain true benefits from process improvements. It covers sustainability and metrics, Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma tools, sustainability project management, sustainability modeling, sustainable manufacturing and operations, decision making, and sustainability logistics. These tools help sustain results while keeping organizations competitive regardless of economic conditions. While continuous improvement techniques look good on paper, the implementation of the techniques can become difficult and challenging to maintain. Without utilizing Lean Six Sigma tools and leading the change, companies will become less and less marketable and profitable. This book supplies a blueprint on achieving sustainable results from high-quality improvements and making organizations competitive and first in class in their marketplace.

These are just some of the methods that, overthe past five decades, have promised to transformany manufacturing firm into a lean, mean, moneymakingmachine. While each incorporates certainfundamental truths, strengths, and benefits, theyare not panaceas. Nor do they necessarily providemuch-needed insight into the science that underliesfactory performance. James Ignizio, Ph.D., an internationally recognizedperformance optimization expert, believesthat only a balanced approach will provide thesignificant and sustainable improvement requiredof firms who will survive and prosper in thetwenty-first century. In this breakthrough guide, Dr. Ignizio picks upwhere such concepts as Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturingleave off to provide you with a holistic,three-dimensional approach to mastering the artand science of manufacturing. Focusing on the three primary enemiesof factory performance—complexity, variability, and lackluster leadership—Optimizing FactoryPerformance cuts to the heart of the problem ofless-than-world-class performance and demonstrateshow those enemies manifest themselves incompanies across manufacturing sectors. Ignizioalso explores the insidious effect company politicsand flagging commitment to manufacturing performancehave on competitiveness. Emphasizing the all-important, often overlookedthird dimension of manufacturing—factoryprotocols—Ignizio describes the types of strategicand tactical changes to physical plant and operatingprocedures any company can make to achieveperformance improvements. In addition, he arms youwith powerful, original metrics for measuring andcomparing factory performance, as well as a set ofinteractive simulation models, available online atwww.mhprofessional.com/ignizio. Running throughout the book is an oftenamusing, always instructive account of the fictionalhigh-tech firm, Muddle, Inc., which helps supportthe concepts discussed in the real world of manufacturing, while reinforcing key lessons learned. Read Optimizing Factory Performance and findout how to transform your organization into the kindof fast, agile manufacturer that delivers the rightproducts to the right customers at the right time—every time.

This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights recent research on sustainable production. In today’s manufacturing industry, cleaner production has become a central goal. “Sustainable production” describes activities that pose no threat to future generations and are not pursued at their expense. In addition, sustainable production is a concept that can improve environmental performance and focuses on technical aspects that can be used to improve efficiency and productivity. Sustainable production is not limited to the manufacturing sector, but affects all production sectors including energy, environment, and material systems – all of which face significant challenges in connection with sustainability, e.g. efforts to reduce production’s impact on the environment and to manage health and safety impacts. Key means of reducing environmental pollution from manufacturing involve reducing the main resources used in production (metals used in the machining processes, fluids/oils in production, water, and energy).

Book excerpt: Optimization is considered as a decision-making process for getting the most out of available resources for the best attainable results. Many real-world problems are multi-objective or multi-attribute problems that naturally involve several competing objectives that need to be optimized simultaneously, while respecting some constraints or involving selection among feasible discrete alternatives. In this Reprint of the Special Issue, 19 research papers co-authored by 88 researchers from 14 different countries explore aspects of multi-objective or multi-attribute modeling and optimization in crisp or uncertain environments by suggesting multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) and multi-objective decision-making (MODM) approaches. The papers elaborate upon the approaches of state-of-the-art case studies in selected areas of applications related to sustainable development decision aiding in engineering and management, including construction, transportation, infrastructure development, production, and organization management.

This book was released on 2024-11-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annual report monitors and evaluates agricultural policies in 54 countries, including the 38 OECD countries, the five non‐OECD EU Member States, and 11 emerging economies. It finds that despite some modest declines in recent years, support to agriculture has remained close to recent historical highs. While changes in support have been limited, agricultural policies have been both reactive and proactive, boosting the sector’s capacity to respond to current challenges while aiming to ensure that food systems are fit for purpose as future conditions evolve. This year’s report focuses on policies fostering sustainable productivity growth in agriculture. Governments are applying a large variety of approaches to improve productivity while preserving natural resources and reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The report notes, however, that clearly defined targets related to sustainable productivity growth and measurable indicators of progress are important to ensure that policies achieve their stated objectives. The report also notes that making more effective use of producer support to promote innovation and environmental sustainability on the farm, and refocusing overall support towards targeted R&D, can better leverage public spending to deliver public goods and sustainable productivity growth. In line with the 2022 OECD Agriculture Ministerial Declaration, the report identifies a seven-point policy agenda for making agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, and for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural support and markets.
