Book Synopsis Sustainable Landscape Planning by : Paul Selman
Download or read book Sustainable Landscape Planning written by Paul Selman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes as its starting point the need to examine critically the case for landscape reconnection. It looks at alleged disconnections and their supposed consequences. It explores the arguments about reconnecting the natural and human elements of whole landscapes. More broadly, it considers landscape as an arena within which science, humanities and professions can find common ground, and in which vivid social learning can occur about key social and environmental issues. It takes a dynamic view of landscape, in contrast to the popular image of timeless, traditional scenery. It accepts that even the most cherished cultural landscapes will change and, indeed, it views ‘change drivers’ as a potentially positive means of creating new connectivities between people and place. It recognises the growing interest in promoting resilience and ecosystem services across extensive landscapes - such as by creating new 'space' for water and wildlife.

Book excerpt: This reprint, originally published in 1983, draws attention to the important lines of thought that have emerged during the past several decades to offer a portrait of contemporary physical geography which have been drawn together in this text. It introduces conventional terms and topics of the subject and weaves them into a conceptual fabric that rests on three major themes, including the energy-balance concept; a model for understanding the forces and processes in the landscape; the stress-threshold concept; the relationship between the stress produced by forces such as wind and water and the resistance of the earth's materials; and the magnitude and frequency of change in the landscape. Chapter summaries are featured along with numerous illustrations.
Book Synopsis Planning and Designing Sustainable and Resilient Landscapes by : Cerasella Crăciun

This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with planning issues in landscape architecture, which start at the evaluation of the existing fabric of society, its history and memory, approached and conserved through photography, film and scenographic installations, a way in which the archetypes can be investigated, be it industrial derelict sites or already green spaces and cultural landscapes. It provides approaches to intervention, through rehabilitation and upgrade, eventually in participative manner. To such evaluation and promotion a couple of disciplines can contribute such as history of art, geography and communication science and of course (landscape) architecture. The field of landscape architecture reunites points of view from such different disciplines with a view to an active approach a contemporary intervention or conservation. The book presents case studies from several European countries (Romania, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal) mostly for large landscape in the outskirts of the cities and in the parks.

Book Synopsis Principles of Ecological Landscape Design by : Travis Beck
Download or read book Principles of Ecological Landscape Design written by Travis Beck and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is a growing demand for designed landscapes—from public parks to backyards—to be not only beautiful and functional, but also sustainable. Sustainability means more than just saving energy and resources. It requires integrating the landscapes we design with ecological systems. With Principles of Ecological Landscape Design, Travis Beck gives professionals and students the first book to translate the science of ecology into design practice. This groundbreaking work explains key ecological concepts and their application to the design and management of sustainable landscapes. It covers biogeography and plant selection, assembling plant communities, competition and coexistence, designing ecosystems, materials cycling and soil ecology, plant-animal interactions, biodiversity and stability, disturbance and succession, landscape ecology, and global change. Beck draws on real world cases where professionals have put ecological principles to use in the built landscape. The demand for this information is rising as professional associations like the American Society of Landscape Architects adopt new sustainability guidelines (SITES). But the need goes beyond certifications and rules. For constructed landscapes to perform as we need them to, we must get their underlying ecology right. Principles of Ecological Landscape Design provides the tools to do just that.

Book Synopsis Residential Landscape Sustainability by : Carl Smith
Download or read book Residential Landscape Sustainability written by Carl Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable resource for developers and designers will help to develop design solutions sympathetic to the environment and improve the sustainability of residential landscapes. The landscapes around housing have a crucial role in creating a more sustainable future with carbon-neutral homes. This book shows how to improve the sustainable profile of new residential developments through landscape planning, design and management – by conserving resources and minimising pollution, and by enhancing ecological diversity. This may be achieved without significant additional capital outlay. The residential landscape sustainability checklist gives housing developers, landscape architects, architects and planners a tool with which to assess the environmental implication of their schemes throughout the design process – from site planning to detailed design. The checklist focuses on residential housing developments but many features of the tool - including improving energy efficiency, materials selection, planting design and management - can also be applied to a wide range of different types of development, from school grounds to retail parks.
Book Synopsis Landscape Planning with Ecosystem Services by : Christina von Haaren
Download or read book Landscape Planning with Ecosystem Services written by Christina von Haaren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human well-being depends in many ways on maintaining the stock of natural resources which deliver the services from which human’s benefit. However, these resources and flows of services are increasingly threatened by unsustainable and competing land uses. Particular threats exist to those public goods whose values are not well-represented in markets or whose deterioration will only affect future generations. As market forces alone are not sufficient, effective means for local and regional planning are needed in order to safeguard scarce natural resources, coordinate land uses and create sustainable landscape structures. This book argues that a solution to such challenges in Europe can be found by merging the landscape planning tradition with ecosystem services concepts. Landscape planning has strengths in recognition of public benefits and implementation mechanisms, while the ecosystem services approach makes the connection between the status of natural assets and human well-being more explicit. It can also provide an economic perspective, focused on individual preferences and benefits, which helps validate the acceptability of environmental planning goals. Thus linking landscape planning and ecosystem services provides a two-way benefit, creating a usable science to meet the needs of local and regional decision making. The book is structured around the Driving forces-Pressures-States-Impacts-Responses framework, providing an introduction to relevant concepts, methodologies and techniques. It presents a new, ecosystem services-informed, approach to landscape planning that constitutes both a framework and toolbox for students and practitioners to address the environmental and landscape challenges of 21st century Europe.
