Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS: This book is about Design and Visual Communication for secondary school students and teachers. It is a very useful resource for primary, secondary school teachers and tertiary students, who are interested in all aspects of sustainable architecture. Designers and architects could also find it an interesting read. The software Google Sketch-up used, discussed, and illustrated in this book, is very user-friendly. The computer-aided drawing program – SketchUpMake – is freeware, which can be downloaded from the Internet. The computer program is very easy to use; very young kids, like primary school students, and secondary school students, can use it. It is a great design program and many tertiary students, as well as professional architects and designers, make use of it. The advantage is that objects and buildings can be designed in just minutes, for example, concepts and ideas. Included in the sleep-out brief is general research (inspiration board, design eras & influential architects), and design activities that include possible solutions to a sustainable architectural design brief. Extensive content is included on freehand sketches, SketchUp computer-aided drawings, elevations, site plans, diagrams, screenshots, biomimetics, assessments, and more. The assessment of the chosen building site is presented, including weather and climatic factors. Additionally, the author has included links to his YouTube videos (model/movement). These videos were specifically included to assist the solution to sustainable architectural briefs. Links to published academic work by the author, and much more, are also included. See Five House Publishing for more details. Exemplars of secondary school students work (sixteen-year-olds) from a New Zealand Secondary School are included (Design and Visual Communication). Book excerpt: Summary: In this report, the author addresses the 'leaky homes' issue from an architectural and health perspective. As an experienced Design and Visual Communication (DVC) teacher, the author looks at the water tightness of monolithic cladded walls ('hollow' walls). He extends his report and research to earth building practices (cob, straw bale, mudbricks, adobe, earth rammed, and more). The report's focus and context are New Zealand (NZ) homes. He refers to British Columbia, who has experienced the same leaky homes problem, in brief. The report researches and investigates sustainable building materials/practice and the moisture content in dwellings. The aspects investigated will mainly be on the monolithic cladding of walls. The book addresses issues like how moisture influences physical health - particularly the mold and fungi in walls. He also looks in brief at the cladding of earth building walls and the waterproofing thereof. As for social action (education - secondary school/high school student's views) - an awareness campaign initiated by students targeting builders, council members, estate agents, architects, school students, parents, and the public is touched on. Perspectives and approaches used in this book are Education for Sustainability, Environmental Education, and Sustainable Architecture. In this book, the author also shares information and images of the sustainable classroom ('The Living Room') created by a Primary Enviro-School in New Zealand in 2009. Photos of the completed classroom, with captions, are included. The sustainable classroom was planned, designed, and constructed as a collaborative school project. The students of the school were consulted and included in the process (student agency). Excellent sustainable practice is displayed in the selection of sustainable materials and the inclusion of sustainable features, and function. Aesthetics were cleverly merged within the sustainability framework to produce a beautiful building. The building materials were carefully selected to maximise the sustainable outcome of the classroom. A beautiful, functional, and very practical classroom indeed! Teachers and students interested in Sustainable Architecture, Design and Visual Communication, Earth Buildings, and Sustainable Educational Spaces will find this book interesting and very useful. Word count = 5787 Pages = 53 (size A4) including many images, and links. APA referencing is included.

Book excerpt: Introduction: In this position paper, I will look at some of the important issues regarding the theorising of knowledge, concepts of knowledge, knowledge differentiation and the New Zealand Technology Curriculum. I will explore some ideas related to situated cognition and the construction of knowledge. I will then move on and focus on some issues related to the generality of learning and the context -dependency of learning. In the fourth place, we will look at curriculum theory about developing Technology Curricula. Lastly, we will explore the implications for Technology education in New Zealand based on different global Technology Curricula perspectives. I will use my own experience as a Technology teacher (Design and Visual Communication-secondary school) to evaluate and critique curriculum matters as I interpret them. Also, after completing the paper, I ask a relevant practical question, and I endeavour to answer it by providing a typical Design and Visual Communication design brief for secondary school students (17-year-olds): "So, what could a typical design brief look like?" From a Design and Visual Communication (DVC – New Zealand Context). Background to the academic paper: APA Referencing Here follows a typical architectural design brief for 17-year old students. Situation 1: You are a famous architect and you are contracted by a specific country to design a unique sustainable Art Science Museum. The brief includes the incorporation of the country's culture, the symbolism, the technology, the art, the science, the engineering, the values and history of that particular country. Brief 1: Design a unique sustainable Art Science Museum for any country of your choice. Situation 2: You have completed your design and presentations (portfolio) of the solution of your sustainable Art Science Museum design and you are offered the opportunity to showcase your design work in one of the local museums. A room is given to you with the freedom to display your work as you wish (no limitations). The size of the room is 10 m x 10 m =100 square metre. With an entrance and exit -2 x arch openings. You have all the museum facilities and equipment at your disposal. For example, data projector, and state of the art computer with all the apps/software you want. Display frames/shelves/tables/pedestals/cabinets, etc. You also have the freedom to have your work printed, enlarged, and mounted at a local print/copy shop. It also includes the opportunity to create your own website. Search the internet for more ideas before you endeavour your planning/ design/layout of the exhibition/display. Obviously, you will start with research and then move on to freehand sketching (generate ideas, ideation, and concepts for the display). Use this opportunity to creatively link your display to the website, to showcase and market your design ideas. Brief 2: Plan and design a display of your completed design work (Art Science Museum) at a local museum. Create a simple website with menus that includes all the basic information and links to your design work. For example, your exhibition/display locally at the Waikato Museum—New Zealand. In other words, it is the overall plan which includes: Room layout, the position of detailed displays, media used, annotated freehand sketches, work drawings, 3-d model display, on-screen presentation (data projector), pamphlets, website details, and so on. See the Waikato Museum in New Zealand, for a specific local museum, if you choose the Waikato region. Word Count = 9524 Pages = 63 Some APA Referencing included

Book excerpt: Understanding Sustainable Architecture is a review of the assumptions, beliefs, goals and bodies of knowledge that underlie the endeavour to design (more) sustainable buildings and other built developments. Much of the available advice and rhetoric about sustainable architecture begins from positions where important ethical, cultural and conceptual issues are simply assumed. If sustainable architecture is to be a truly meaningful pursuit then it must be grounded in a coherent theoretical framework. This book sets out to provide that framework. Through a series of self-reflective questions for designers, the authors argue the ultimate importance of reasoned argument in ecological, social and built contexts, including clarity in the problem framing and linking this framing to demonstrably effective actions. Sustainable architecture, then, is seen as a revised conceptualisation of architecture in response to a myriad of contemporary concerns about the effects of human activity. The aim of this book is to be transformative by promoting understanding and discussion of commonly ignored assumptions behind the search for a more environmentally sustainable approach to development. It is argued that design decisions must be based on both an ethical position and a coherent understanding of the objectives and systems involved. The actions of individual designers and appropriate broader policy settings both follow from this understanding.

Book excerpt: In the 21st century, architects and engineers are being challenged to produce work that is concurrently sustainable and resilient. Buildings need to mitigate their impact on climate change by minimising their carbon footprint, while also countering the challenging new weather conditions. Globally, severe storms, extreme droughts and rising sea levels are becoming an increasingly reoccurring feature. To respond, a design process is required that seeks to integrate resiliency by building in the capacity to absorb the impacts of these disruptive events and adapt over time to further changes, while simultaneously being part of the solution to the problem itself. This issue of AD is guest-edited by the interdisciplinary team at Stevens Institute of Technology who developed the winning entry for the 2015 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition, the SU+RE House. While particular focus is paid to this student designed and built prototype home, the publication also provides a broader discussion of the value of design-build as a model for tackling the issue of integrating sustainability and resilience, and what changes are required across education, policy, practice and industry for widespread implementation. Contributors include: Bronwyn Barry, Michael Bruno, Alex Carpenter, Adam Cohen, Ann Holtzman, Ken Levenson, Brady Peters, Terri Peters, Karin Stieldorf, Alex Washburn, Claire Weisz, and Graham Wright. Featured architects: 3XN/GXN, FXFOWLE Architects, Local Office Landscape Architecture (LOLA), Lateral Office, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Snohetta, Structures Design Build, and WXY Studio.
