Book Synopsis Freshwater Dinoflagellates of North America by : Susan Carty
Download or read book Freshwater Dinoflagellates of North America written by Susan Carty and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dinoflagellates are common unicellular organisms found in all types of aquatic ecosystems and are important contributors to freshwater ecosystems as significant primary producers of biomass. Despite increasing interest in the biology of living and fossil dinoflagellates, there has been no compilation of dinoflagellate species found in North America since 1934, and no keys to species. In Freshwater Dinoflagellates of North America, Susan Carty provides a much-needed taxonomic guide covering Canada, the United States, Mexico, all of Central America, the Caribbean, and Greenland. Features of the book include:• identification of dinoflagellate species, • distribution maps of species, • ecological and morphological keys to genera, • key to species within genus, • lists of references by location, • glossary, and • an extensive illustration program.Following an introductory section on the biology, morphology, and ecology of freshwater dinoflagellates, the species are presented in a field guide format with distribution maps, written descriptions emphasizing notable features, line drawings, and black-and-white and color micrographs.

Book Synopsis Endosymbiotic Organelle Acquisition by : Steven D. Schwartzbach
Download or read book Endosymbiotic Organelle Acquisition written by Steven D. Schwartzbach and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This volume provides in depth reviews of the protein targeting translocation processes, gene transfer processes and genome reduction processes in the host and in the endosymbiont which were likely utilized during the evolution of an endosymbiont into mitochondria, mitochondria related organelles, simple and complex chloroplasts. These reviews cover both the current understanding of the host processes as well as the evolutionary outcomes used by these organelles for protein targeting and translocation. Reviews of the current knowledge of these topics are plentiful but scattered throughout the bacterial, parasite, plant and animal literature; here, reviews of current knowledge with evolutionary outcomes and future perspectives, written by leading researchers in their respective areas, are united into one comprehensive volume, essential for students and scientists interested in or working on subcellular protein localization, protein targeting signals, translocation of proteins across and insertion into membranes, nucleic acid transfer between genomes, genome reduction and evolution of mitochondria and chloroplast.
Book Synopsis Algal Toxins: Nature, Occurrence, Effect and Detection by : Valtere Evangelista
Download or read book Algal Toxins: Nature, Occurrence, Effect and Detection written by Valtere Evangelista and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensor Systems for Biological Threads: The Algal Toxins Case”, held in Pisa, Italy in October, 2007. The Institute was sponsored and funded by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It is my pleasant duty to thank this institution. This ASI offered updated information on how far the research on algal toxins has gone in the exploration of structures, biosynthesis and regulation of toxins, and the development of technology for bio-monitoring these c- pounds. Algae can form heavy growths in ponds, lakes, reservoirs and sl- moving rivers throughout the world; algae can house toxins which are - ually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Hundreds of toxins have been identified so far. Detection methods, including rapid screening, have been developed to help us learning more about them, especially to find out which toxins are a real threat for people and what conditions encourage their production and accumulation. Early detection of algal toxins is an - portant aspect for public safety and natural environment, and significant efforts are underway to develop effective and reliable tools that can be used for this purpose.

Book Synopsis Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa, Bd. 6 - Freshwater Flora of Central Europe, Vol. 6: Dinophyceae by : Øjvind Moestrup
Download or read book Süßwasserflora von Mitteleuropa, Bd. 6 - Freshwater Flora of Central Europe, Vol. 6: Dinophyceae written by Øjvind Moestrup and published by Springer Spektrum. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the freshwater dinoflagellates of the world and comprises 350 species. It serves as a reference work for identifying freshwater dinoflagellates by providing keys, detailed descriptions, and illustrations for all described species. The illustrations are based on old and classic descriptions and drawings that were combined with more recent figures. The introductory chapters comprise the history of dinoflagellate research, cell structure, ecology (by K. Rengefors and A. Kremp) and cell culturing (by G. Hansen). Taxonomic studies of dinoflagellates began at the time of early light microscopists, and modern studies have shown that long-held views on the taxonomy are often unsatisfactory. Two new orders, Amphidiniales and Tovelliales, three new families, Amphidiniaceae, Gyrodiniaceae and Sphaerodiniaceae, and two new genera, Matvienkoella and Speroidium, are proposed. Seven new species and one new variety are described. Four new names and 80 new combinations are established.
