Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller “I’ll be forever changed by Dr. Eger’s story…The Choice is a reminder of what courage looks like in the worst of times and that we all have the ability to pay attention to what we’ve lost, or to pay attention to what we still have.”—Oprah “Dr. Eger’s life reveals our capacity to transcend even the greatest of horrors and to use that suffering for the benefit of others. She has found true freedom and forgiveness and shows us how we can as well.” —Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate “Dr. Edith Eva Eger is my kind of hero. She survived unspeakable horrors and brutality; but rather than let her painful past destroy her, she chose to transform it into a powerful gift—one she uses to help others heal.” —Jeannette Walls, New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle Winner of the National Jewish Book Award and Christopher Award At the age of sixteen, Edith Eger was sent to Auschwitz. Hours after her parents were killed, Nazi officer Dr. Josef Mengele, forced Edie to dance for his amusement and her survival. Edie was pulled from a pile of corpses when the American troops liberated the camps in 1945. Edie spent decades struggling with flashbacks and survivor’s guilt, determined to stay silent and hide from the past. Thirty-five years after the war ended, she returned to Auschwitz and was finally able to fully heal and forgive the one person she’d been unable to forgive—herself. Edie weaves her remarkable personal journey with the moving stories of those she has helped heal. She explores how we can be imprisoned in our own minds and shows us how to find the key to freedom. The Choice is a life-changing book that will provide hope and comfort to generations of readers.

Book excerpt: My name is George Lubow, I was born in the small town of Nowogrodek; in what was once Eastern Poland, now Byelorussia. I am a retired businessman and Holocaust survivor. For more than 35 years I was in the dress business. In 1957, I opened my first dress shop in South Pasadena. A year later I opened my second dress shop in Montrose. I met a cross section of the local population. In the process of selling dresses, I listened to many of my customer's problems. In return, I told them my story. They urged me to write a book about my wartime experiences. I started writing in longhand about 25 years ago. My neighbor, Peggy Hardaker offered to type my story. She kept after me to write more. It was painful for me to bring back old memories. But, at the time many letters to the editor of the Los Angeles Times were distorting the truth about the Holocaust. I felt obligated to write this book so future generations would know and remember the horrors. The generation of survivors is passing on. Each of us has a story to tell. We must also remember that in the darkest hour there were Righteous Gentiles who risked their lives to save us. This is my story.

Book excerpt: "Epic in scope, but gentle and charming in delivery, Fred Amram's We're in America Now is a quiet chronicle of a clamorous era. Politics and war compel Amram's family to leave the only home they ever knew and embark on a personal exodus, fleeing a new pharaoh, pursuing a new promised land. They arrive in America to discover that paradise is not all milk and honey, but love, loyalty, and faith conspire to hold the family together, and the story of how they rebuild the life that was robbed them is moving, probing, and insightful." —J.C. Hallman, author of B & Me: A True Story of Literary Arousal These compelling stories form a riveting memoir that begins with the author's birth during the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany. He and his surviving family soon escape to Holland and sail to America where they encounter many challenges as immigrants in a new world. This country truly becomes a land of opportunity where one can build a new life and become more than a "Holocaust survivor." Fred Amram is a retired University of Minnesota professor of communication and creativity. He spent his early years in Hanover, Germany, where he experienced the Holocaust from its inception in 1933. He witnessed Kristallnacht and the Gestapo invading his home. He watched the British bombers from his balcony when Jews were banned from air raid shelters. The loss of uncles, aunts, a grandmother, and many more relatives has motivated him to share his experiences in hopes of ending genocide everywhere.

Book excerpt: EXCERPTS FOR WEBSITE (Survivor's Odyssey - BID # 112614)As I sit by my window, gazing out over the autumnal park, the turning leaves straining in the gusting west wind, and a suggestion of morning sun stippling a clump of trees in the near distance, my thoughts return to the view from my childhood room on Lutherstrasse, a bourgeois, cobblestone-paved street in Wittenberg lined with neatly spaced lindens. How tranquil it all seemed then. Like other early childhoods contemplated late in life, mine seems idyllic in retrospect. A cozy home, devoted parents, playmates and relatives nearby. Who could have predicted then that Wittenberg, this ancient town, the cradle of the Protestant Reformation, would soon, like the rest of Germany, be swept up in the fanaticism and hysteria of National Socialism? When did I first realize that I was not just another German child, that I was merely tolerated, later reviled, and finally cast out? How strange it seems now that it took so long for me to comprehend that what was happening to me and my fellow Jews was extraordinary. **************Finally, in November 1938, all the accumulated hatred reached critical mass. And the dry tinder was ignited by an assassin's bullet. The son of Polish Jews, enraged by his parents' deportation, shot an attaché at the German Embassy in Paris, and this provided a sufficient pretext for what came to be known as Crystal Night (Kristallnacht), the opening salvo of the Holocaust. The official story was that the assassination so outraged the German people that they could not be restrained from seeking revenge. The truth is that, in a clearly coordinated effort across the entire country, synagogues were set afire, Jewish shops looted and destroyed, and Jewish homes invaded and destroyed. A mob mentality nurtured for years had, at long last, found its focus in action. *********************In the late '40s, hitchhiking was still a viable option. I was now in civilian attire, and I knew that drivers, even those open to hitchhikers, had to decide on a dime whether to stop. Most of those who picked me up whizzed past, screeched to a halt twenty yards further on, and watched me run to catch up. Once I got into the car, they checked me out and asked a few questions before deciding whether I was a keeper. Over the succeeding months, I learned a lot about people. Because I was a stranger whom they would never see again, many shared with me confidences that they could not share with family, friends or people in their communities. They told me of their addictions, their adulteries, their sexual proclivities. It wasn't because of who I was. Out of a deep need, they would have shared these confidences with almost anyone. And at times, it was uncomfortable for me to listen. I wanted them to stop talking, but I needed the ride and kept my mouth shut. *******************Aware that I would have to work part time, I answered an ad and landed a job with the Whelan's chain of drugstores as a "soda jerker." I worked two eight-hour shifts, one on Wednesdays from four to midnight, the other on Saturdays. Since I was low man on the totem pole, my employers felt free to shift me around from store to store as vacancies occurred. Most of my colleagues were unskilled drifters who worked only long enough to save a few bucks; few were college students like me. But I was soon disabused of any idea that this gave me special status. The best I could hope for was the occasional gig at an upscale location, but I was just as likely to be sent to a hellhole like the notorious hangout for pimps and drug dealers at the corner of Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street. The pay was lousy, the tips few and far between, but what I learned about people was a valuable adjunct to what I learned in my college classes. *************************Until about 30 years later. He was by now a gr

With his direct and deceptively simple style, George Topas convinces us that we're sharing the heartfelt recollections of an old and dear friend. This story - and this decent, unassuming hero - will leave an incredible impression on all readers" - Michael Medved "The Iron Furnace will greatly contribute to the deepening memory of the Holocaust. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 9 December 1971. 8.45 p.m. Torpedoed by a Pakistani submarine, the INS Khukri sank within minutes. Along with the ship, 178 sailors and 18 officers made the supreme sacrifice. Last seen calmly puffing on his cigarette, Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, captain of the Khukri, chose to go down with his ship. This defining moment of the 1971 war between India and Pakistan is the basis of Major General Ian Cardozo's attempt to understand what happened that day and why. Major General Cardozo brings fresh insight into the hellish ordeal by including the heartfelt accounts of the survivors and of the members of their families. These accounts transform the stereotypical understanding of the incident; they also supplement it. We glimpse fear, trauma and death at first hand. In the annals of war writing, General Cardozo humanizes this cataclysmic event as never before.
