Book excerpt: "There was no way to anticipate the horrors of the holocaust that awaited us on the Dog Green sector." --Dr. Harold Baumgarten Just as it was portrayed in the major motion pictures The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan, the Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach was the smallest but most heavily defended part of Normandy Beach, only nine hundred yards long by three hundred yards wide at low tide. Considered an impregnable Atlantic wall, Omaha Beach was fortified by concrete walls, landmines, a twenty-five-foot seawall topped with mines and barbed wire, and a one-hundred-foot bluff. It was the bravery and heroism of the 116th Infantry that made subsequent landings of the Twenty-ninth Division possible. In the face of heavy fire and despite suffering the loss of eight hundred men and officers, the 116th Infantry overcame beach obstacles, took the enemy-defended positions along the beach and cliffs, pushed through the mined area under heavy fire, and continued inshore to successfully accomplish their objective. Dr. Harold Baumgarten, a multidecorated survivor, gives his eyewitness account of the first wave landing of the 116th Infantry on D-Day, June 6, 1944. As the spokesperson for soldiers who perished on the sand and bloody red waters of the Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach, Baumgarten feels it is his mission to make sure these men are never forgotten.

Book excerpt: WHAT AM I DOING HERE? by Dr. LeRoy Maleck O.D. is Book III and potentially the most moving of his life experiences. This book contains the recollections of that time in life when a 22 year old army combat infantry medic was forced to rapidly mature and change forever. The author's first person style and account clearly comes from being there. This book chronicles his entry into the army as seen by a new recruit. The true account continues through basic training, continued training and the introduction to army life and situations that seem as a satire and have humorous moments. Follow his journey with the 137th Infantry Regiment, aboard a troop ship to England. Then in early July, D Day + 28 Days, his Regiment is on Omaha Beach. Roughly 11 days later he, with his unit is engaged in something his training could not prepare him for, combat with a determined, entrenched enemy. Follow the exploits of war through the eyes of a combat infantry medic who went through, survived, and helped others survive. of some of the most brutal battles faced by the U.S. Army in World War II, Including the Northern France Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. In addition to an army combat medic's first person account of his participation in World War II, the author has included a sorry about a rather amazing four legged friend, Speed. Speed was his Uncle Bill's dog, companion, and often hunting partner. In contrast to the War chronicles you may find this amazing heartwarming and just a great sorry about a truly amazing dog.

Book excerpt: Robert G. Behee had a front-row seat to some of the most consequential battles during WWII, and he wrote it all down in his diary. He fought at "Omaha Beach," in France in the Battle of D-Day on a barge called a "Rhino." He received a Purple Heart after stepping on a mine that exploded a buried bomb, which threw him to safety. He was "rewarded" for surviving D-Day by being sent to the South Pacific to prepare for the Invasion of Japan. July 9, 1944: ACHTUNG MINEN! [German for "Attention Mines"]. At 6:00 PM today, "I heard Gabriel's horn." After they found that German in the pillbox, my friend Zel and I decided to see if we could find any more hidden pillboxes within the cliffs. After a lengthy search, the only thing of note we found was a rotten Nazi arm on the ground. We had a little trouble tracing our way down the cliff. As I stepped onto a path, there was a terrific explosion. One that was strong enough to knock us both to the ground. I knew we had set off a mine. I felt a burning sensation in my right leg. I kept my eyes closed because I was sure if I looked, I would see that my leg was blown off. I have seen the effects that mines have on people, and most of the time, they are torn apart. As I opened my eyes, I was able to see that, miraculously, I seemed to be in one piece. As I picked myself up, I saw Zel next to me with blood streaming down his face. He was crawling and trying to get to his feet. Both of us looked at each other with a dazed look. I asked him if he was hurt. He replied that he had got it in his legs. Before I could respond to Zel, the ground began to tremble. A noise, too loud for me to perceive, thundered in my ears. Then, I was shot up into the air and flung by the concussion of the blast into a trench some ten feet away. When I opened my eyes this time, I saw that Zel had been thrown into the trench with me. Both of us were both bruised and battered but very much alive!

Book excerpt: The miraculous account of the man who survived alone and adrift at sea longer than anyone in recorded history. For fourteen months, Alvarenga survived constant shark attacks. He learned to catch fish with his bare hands. He built a fish net from a pair of empty plastic bottles. Taking apart the outboard motor, he fashioned a huge fishhook. Using fish vertebrae as needles, he stitched together his own clothes. Based on dozens of hours of interviews with Alvarenga and interviews with his colleagues, search and rescue officials, the medical team that saved his life and the remote islanders who nursed him back to health, this is an epic tale of survival. Print run 75,000.

Book excerpt: "If you survive your first day, I'll promote you." So promised George Wilson's World War II commanding officer in the hedgerows of Normandy -- and it was to be a promise dramatically fulfilled. From July, 1944, to the closing days of the war, from the first penetration of the Siegfried Line to the Nazis' last desperate charge in the Battle of the Bulge, Wilson fought in the thickest of the action, helping take the small towns of northern France and Belgium building by building. Of all the men and officers who started out in Company F of the 4th Infantry Division with him, Wilson was the only one who finished. In the end, he felt not like a conqueror or a victor, but an exhausted survivor, left with nothing but his life -- and his emotions. If You Survive One of the great first-person accounts of the making of a combat veteran, in the last, most violent months of World War II.

Book excerpt: The New York Times Bestseller | Winner of the Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award Omaha Beach legend Ray Lambert's unforgettable firsthand account of D-Day “Lambert landed on [Omaha Beach] as a 23-year-old Army medic. ... As the bullets cut down his comrades, he raced repeatedly back into the sea to drag out wounded soldiers.” —New York Times Seventy-five years ago, he hit Omaha Beach with the first wave. Now D-Day legend Ray Lambert (1920-2021) delivers one of the most remarkable memoirs of our time, a tour-de-force of remembrance evoking his role as a decorated World War II medic who risked his life to save the heroes of Normandy. At five a.m. on June 6, 1944, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ray Lambert worked his way through a throng of nervous soldiers to a wind-swept deck on a troopship off the coast of Normandy, France. A familiar voice cut through the wind and rumble of the ship’s engines. “Ray!” called his brother, Bill. Ray, head of a medical team for the First Division’s famed 16th Infantry Regiment, had already won a silver star in 1943 for running through German lines to rescue trapped men, one of countless rescues he’d made in North Africa and Sicily. “This is going to be the worst yet,” Ray told his brother, who served alongside him throughout the war. “If I don’t make it,” said Bill, “take care of my family.” “I will,” said Ray. He thought about his wife and son–a boy he had yet to see. “Same for me.” The words were barely out of Ray’s mouth when a shout came from below. To the landing craft! The brothers parted. Their destinies lay ten miles away, on the bloodiest shore of Normandy, a plot of Omaha Beach ironically code named “Easy Red.” Less than five hours later, after saving dozens of lives and being wounded at least three separate times, Ray would lose consciousness in the shallow water of the beach under heavy fire. He would wake on the deck of a landing ship to find his battered brother clinging to life next to him. Every Man a Hero is the unforgettable story not only of what happened in the incredible and desperate hours on Omaha Beach, but of the bravery and courage that preceded them, throughout the Second World War—from the sands of Africa, through the treacherous mountain passes of Sicily, and beyond to the greatest military victory the world has ever known.

Book excerpt: Victims of sexual assault experience their trauma in different ways, and often one path to recovery and healing is right for one person, but not right for another. While there are some general mental health effects of sexual violence, this book outlines and describes the impact of particular types of sexual violation. Whether the survivor has experienced childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault during adulthood, marital rape, sexual harassment, sex trafficking, or sexual violence within the military, they will find aspects of her experience in these pages. Once survivors understand the ways in which they have been affected, they are introduced to various pathways to surviving sexual violence and moving forward. The chapters provide case examples and specific activities which give a fuller description of the ways survivors can make use of the particular approaches, which include mind-body practices, counseling, group therapies, self-defense training, and others. Anyone who has been a victim of sexual violence, or knows and cares about someone who has, will find relief in these pages, which offer practical approaches to finding balance and healing.

Having just received orders to be herded off to a concentration camp, Gisela will do anything to save herself and her family. In the air, RAF bomber Captain Wallace Campbell is torn between his sworn military duty to bomb an unarmed city crowded with refugees, and his growing conviction that total war is immoral. Surviving Dresden is told through the eyes of Gisela, Wallace, and a compelling cast of characters—a story of personal pain and suffering amid the hope, even as the bombs are falling, of restoring human sanity to a world torn apart. Masterfully sweeping, Surviving Dresden explores the depths of human courage in facing life and death, with human redemption triumphing. “An evocative, inventive tale of war and moral judgment. Surviving Dresden vividly brings to life one of the most controversial episodes of the Second World War.” —Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of the World War II Liberation Trilogy “An incredibly suspenseful, powerful story with a redemptive ending. Deserves a wide reading audience, even serious consideration for the big screen. Happy to offer my highest recommendation.” —Frank Price, Former Chairman and CEO, Columbia Pictures, and Former President, Universal Pictures
