She said herself, “I knew at that moment in time that nothing would be as it had been.” This event marked the after, and her whole life was now just a before. Having seen so many of her family and colleagues go through the same issues, she was shocked and saddened by people’s inability to offer sound advice or even basic support. Initially, she found this uncertainty frightening and extremely isolating; but with time and access to some very compassionate professionals, Lou Lou Rose eventually decided to make a stand and say what needed saying. She wrote this book in an attempt to give others and their families simple and sound advice to make this journey just a little bit easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of its kind, this anthology by members of the Mohawk Warrior Society uncovers a hidden history and paints a bold portrait of the spectacular experience of Kanien'kehá:ka survival and self-defense. Providing extensive documentation, context, and analysis, the book features foundational writings by prolific visual artist and polemicist Karoniaktajeh Louis Hall (1918–1993)—such as his landmark 1979 pamphlet, The Warrior's Handbook, as well as selections of his pioneering artwork. This book contains new oral history by key figures of the Rotisken'rhakéhte's revival in the 1970s, and tells the story of the Warriors’ famous flag, their armed occupation of Ganienkeh in 1974, and the role of their constitution, the Great Peace, in guiding their commitment to freedom and independence. We hear directly the story of how the Kanien'kehá:ka Longhouse became one the most militant resistance groups in North America, gaining international attention with the Oka Crisis of 1990. This auto-history of the Rotisken'rhakéhte is complemented by a Mohawk history timeline from colonization to the present, a glossary of Mohawk political philosophy, and a new map of Iroquoia in Mohawk language. At last, the Mohawk Warriors can tell their own story with their own voices, and to serve as an example and inspiration for future generations struggling against the environmental, cultural, and social devastation cast upon the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential handbook for anyone who has ever returned from a war zone, and their spouse, partner, or family members. Being back home can be as difficult, if not more so, than the time spent serving in a combat zone. It’s with this truth that Colonel Charles W. Hoge, MD, a leading advocate for eliminating the stigma of mental health care, presents Once a Warrior—Always a Warrior, a groundbreaking resource with essential new insights for anyone who has ever returned home from a war zone. In clear practical language, Dr. Hoge explores the latest knowledge in combat stress, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury), other physiological reactions to war, and their treatment options. Recognizing that warriors and family members both change during deployment, he helps them better understand each other’s experience, especially living with enduring survival skills from the combat environment that are often viewed as “symptoms” back home. The heart of this book focuses on what’s necessary to successfully navigate the transition—“LANDNAV” for the home front. Once a Warrior—Always a Warrior shows how a warrior’s knowledge and skills are vital for living at peace in an insane world.

Licensed psychologist Dr. Steve Stephens speaks man-to-man in this powerful book that will free you to become the victor God created you to be. Brave Men Bear Real Wounds Beneath your armor, you may be bloodied, beaten, or broken. Where there was once courage and confidence, you now harbor heartache and pain. Life—in all its glory—has taken its toll. But this is not the end. It is where healing starts and life begins. Dr. Steve Stephens speaks man-to-man about all kinds of wounds from the subtle burden of living with nagging regrets, to gut-wrenching blows that include: a divorce the death of a loved one a business deal gone bad betrayal by a trusted friend wounds from family members, and other devastating trials. More than encouragement and guidance, The Wounded Warrior is packed with pointed questions, scriptural teachings, and honest talk about practical solutions. It’s time to move forward…and live once again! Story Behind the Book “After speaking on The Wounded Woman , some guys asked me, ‘What about us?’ I was taken aback and asked, ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Life is hard,’ one of them said. ‘People are cruel. As guys, we get beat up, and nobody addresses our wounds. Help us deal with the pain of getting shot down.’ Over the next month, I couldn’t get this conversation out of my mind. Every day I ran into some wounded warrior: a father facing the death of his son, a husband stunned by the unfaithfulness of his wife, a brother betrayed by a brother. Finally, I recognized I had to write something to encourage us guys.”—Dr. Steve Stephens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 27, 1973, a group of roughly 300 armed Indigenous men, women, and children seized the tiny hamlet of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, at gunpoint, took hostages, barricaded themselves in the hilltop church, and raised an upside-down American flag. Taking place at the site of the infamous massacre in 1890, the highly symbolic confrontation spearheaded by the American Indian Movement (AIM) ultimately evolved into a prolonged, seventy-one-day armed standoff between law enforcement officers and modern-day Indigenous warriors. Among these warriors were Vietnam War veterans armed with Vietnam-era equipment and weaponry. By organizing in defense of the newly proclaimed Independent Oglala Nation, the AIM activists at Wounded Knee linked their nationalist quest for sovereignty and self-determination with a warrior masculinity they constructed from a mix of Indigenous cultures and contemporary cultural elements, including the Black civil rights movement, the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s, and the antiwar movement. As Matthias André Voigt shows, the takeover of Wounded Knee was only one moment among many in the complex interplay between protest activism, gender, race, and identity within AIM. While AIM is widely recognized for its militancy and nationalism, Reinventing the Warrior is the first major study to examine the gendered transformation of Indigenous men within the Red Power movement and the United States more generally. AIM activists came to regard themselves, like their ancestors before them, as warriors fighting for their people, their lands, and their rights. They sought to remasculinize their Indigenous identity in order to confront hegemonic masculinities—and, by implication, colonialism itself. By becoming “more manly,” Indigenous men challenged the disempowering nature of white supremacy. Voigt traces the story of the reinvention of Indigenous warriorhood from 1968 to the takeover of Wounded Knee in 1973 and beyond. His trailblazing work explores why and how Indigenous men refashioned themselves as modern-day warriors in their anticolonial nation-building endeavor, thereby remaking both self and society.
