Book excerpt: The explosive growth of Web-related services over the Internet is bringing millions of new users online, thus fueling an enormous demand for bandwidth. Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) networks, employing wavelength routing have emerged as the dominant technology to satisfy this growing demand for bandwidth. As the amount of traffic carried has increased, any single failure can be catastrophic. Survivability becomes indispensable in such networks. Therefore, it is imperative to design networks that can quickly and efficiently recover from failures. Most research to date in survivable optical network design and operation focuses on single link failures, however, the occurrence of multiple-link failures are not uncommon in a network topology. Multi-link failure scenarios can arise out of two common situations. First, an arbitrary link may fail in the network, and before that link can be repaired, another link fails, thus creating a multi-link failure sequence. Secondly, it might happen in practice that two distinct physical links may be routed via the same common duct or physical channel. A failure at that shared physical location creates a logical multiple-link failure. Such instances where separate fiber optic links share a common failure structure is often referred to as SRLG (Shared-Risk Link Groups). In this dissertation, we study survivability paradigms for surviving multiple link failures. We study the network design and upgrade problem in WDM backbone networks and formulate it using a simulated annealing based technique. This framework provides a cost effective way of upgrading the network by identifying how much resources to budget at each stage of network evolution. This results in significant cost reductions for the network service provider. We study protection reconfiguration using two different survivability paradigms, namely sub-graph routing and shared mesh protection. Initially sub-graphs are defined taking into account link, SRLG, or node failures, and could, in the event of an unrelated or subsequent multi-link failure, incorporate the reactive form of sub-graph fault tolerance. Reactive sub-graph fault tolerance employs a recursive approach for tolerating numerous sequential overlapping failures. It can tolerate simultaneous multiple link failures by simply serializing the handling of each individual fault. Connection re-routing and network reconfiguration is one of the primary challenges in sub-graph routing methodology. We propose a constrained subgraph routing methodology, which restricts the connections to be routed using the same trunk and channel in the subgraphs, thus minimizing reconfiguration. The subgraph based routing methodology is further explored to tolerate multiple link failures, in the form of shared-risk link groups and node failures. The generalized diverse routing problem, for finding two diverse routes between a source and destination has been shown to be NP-Complete. Recent studies have also proven the NP-completeness of the SRLG diverse routing. We propose a polynomial time graph transformation algorithm for solving the diverse routing problem for certain specific SRLG's, which includes link-sets incident on a common node. The proposed graph transformation methodology for diverse routing, is also studied for shared-risk node group (SRNG) failures.

Book excerpt: The advent of fiber optic transmission systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have led to a dramatic increase in the usable bandwidth of single fiber systems. This book provides detailed coverage of survivability (dealing with the risk of losing large volumes of traffic data due to a failure of a node or a single fiber span) and traffic grooming (managing the increased complexity of smaller user requests over high capacity data pipes), both of which are key issues in modern optical networks. A framework is developed to deal with these problems in wide-area networks, where the topology used to service various high-bandwidth (but still small in relation to the capacity of the fiber) systems evolves toward making use of a general mesh. Effective solutions, exploiting complex optimization techniques, and heuristic methods are presented to keep network problems tractable. Newer networking technologies and efficient design methodologies are also described.

Book excerpt: In modern ultra-wide bandwidth, high speed and high reliable communication networks, the failure of network components including equipment (such as routers) and transmission media (such as fibers) may cause a huge volume of data loss. Therefore network survivability mechanisms, by which the disrupted traffic upon failures can be restored, are crucial in network design and deserve thorough investigation. In this thesis, we propose some survivability approaches to survive failures in MPLS and WDM optical networks. MPLS is a promising technology that enables much faster failure recovery than conventional IP rerouting in IP networks. While the traditional MPLS path-based protection scheme is capacity efficient, it is relatively slow in restoration; on the other hand, while traditional MPLS link-based scheme has fast restoration speed, its capacity efficiency is low. In this thesis, we propose a new restoration scheme called UNIFR, which can provide fast restoration as link-based scheme while achieving better capacity efficiency than link-based scheme. We present a MPLS resilience framework that supports UNIFR and give two ILP formulations to solve the spare capacity optimization problem for UNIFR-based restoration model. Simulation study shows that the capacity efficiency of UNIFR-based model is much better than that of link-based model and close to that of path-based model. In WDM optical networks, although lots of pervious works have been done in both protection and restoration survivability techniques, to our best knowledge, little study focuses on improving the dynamic restoration success ratio. To address this problem, we first identify two restoration blocking types called primary holding and mutual competition. To address primary holding, we propose a dynamic routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for connection establishment that takes the future possible failures into consideration and choose route and wavelength for the working lightpath that could lead to higher chance of successful restoration for the potential failures. To address mutual competition, we present some heuristics ideas to increase restoration success ratio. Simulation shows that our algorithms can clearly reduce the restoration blocking probability while not affecting primary blocking probability and restoration speed much.

Abstract: Optical networks with Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology provide huge bandwidth to meet the ever-increasing traffic demand of the next generation Internet. But the high-speed nature of WDM networks also makes the network more vulnerable to failures. Even a single network failure for a very short duration can result in enormous loss of data. In this thesis, we concentrate on designing a survivable WDM network. In essence, survivability concerns two important aspects, fast fault detection and localization, and fast fault recovery. We first study fast fault detection and localization in WDM optical networks. Our work is based on the notion of monitoring cycle (m-cycle). Compared with other fault detection schemes, an m-cycle based fault detection scheme provides fast fault detection and requires less number of expensive monitors. Aiming at further cutting down the implementation cost, we propose the notion of super monitor. Instead of having a dedicated monitor for each m-cycle, a single super monitor can be placed at the junction of a set of overlapped m-cycles. In this thesis, we formulate and solve the monitor placement problem. We then focus on enhancing the capacity efficiency of fast fault recovery schemes. Shared backup path protection (SBPP) schemes can provide 100% protection against any single link failure. This is achieved by establishing a pair of link-disjoint active and backup paths upon each call arrival. The bandwidth on different backup paths can be shared for protecting different calls. In this thesis, a new SBPP scheme is designed based on a two-step routing approach, where the active and backup paths are sequentially optimized with different objectives in mind. We then shift our focus to design fast protection scheme for multicast/broadcast communications. To this end, we refine the existing concept of blue/red tree. Blue/red tree is a pair of spanning trees where the connectivity between the root and any destination node is ensured upon a network failure. In particular, two efficient integer linear programs (ILPs) are formulated for finding the optimal blue/red trees. Last but not the least, we investigate the survivability in IP networks. We notice that existing efforts on IP fast reroute (IPFRR) are effective in enhancing the IP resilience. But the impact of IPFRR on the end-to-end TCP performance is ignored. Notably, path rerouting can interfere with the TCP congestion control mechanism and thus cause severe throughput degradation. To address this problem, we propose a duplicate acknowledgement (ACK) suppression scheme. The key idea is to detect whether an out-of-order packet arrival event is due to IPFRR or not. If it is due to IPFRR, duplicate ACKs triggered will be suppressed by the TCP receiver so as not to cause unnecessary slow down at the TCP sender. Book excerpt: Optical WDM networking technology is spearheading a bandwidth revolution in the networking infrastructure being developed for the next generation Internet. Rapid advances in optical components have enabled the transition from point-to-point WDM links to all-optical networking. Optical WDM Networks: Principles and Practice presents some of the most important challenges facing the optical networking community, along with some suggested solutions. Earlier textbooks in optical networking have a narrower perspective, and rapidly advancing research has created the need for fresh and current information on problems and issues in the field. The volume editors and contributing authors have endeavoured to capture a substantial subset of the key problems and known solutions to these problems. All of the chapters are original contributions from leading international researchers. The chapters address a wide variety of topics, including the state of the art in WDM technology, physical components that make up WDM fiber-optic networks, medium access protocols, wavelength routed networks, optical access networks, network management, and performance evaluation of wavelength routing networks. The chapters also survey critical points in past research and tackle more recent problems. Practitioners and network product engineers interested in current state-of-the-art information beyond textbook-type coverage, and graduate students commencing research in this area, will appreciate the concise - and pertinent - information presented herein.

Book excerpt: In a wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical network, the failure of fiber links may cause the failure of multiple optical channels, thereby leading to large data loss. Therefore the survivable WDM optical networks where the affected traffic under link failure can be restored, have been a matter of much concern. On the other hand, network operators want options that are more than just survivable, but more flexible and more efficient in the use of capacity. In this thesis, we propose our cost-effective approaches to survive link failures in WDM optical networks. Dynamic establishment of restorable connections in WDM networks is an important problem that has received much study. Existing algorithms use either path-based method or link-based method to protect a dynamic connection; the former suffers slow restoration speed while the latter requires complicated online backup path computation. We propose a new dynamic restorable connection establishment algorithm using p-cycle protection. For a given connection request, our algorithm first computes a working path and then computes a set of p-cycles to protect the links on the working path so that the connection can survive any single link failure. The key advantage of the proposed algorithm over the link-based method is that it enables faster failure restoration while requires much simpler online computation for connection establishment. Tree-based schemes offer several advantages such as scalability, failure impact restriction and distributed processing. We present a new tree-based link protection scheme to improve the hierarchical protection tree (p-tree) scheme [31] for single link failure in mesh networks, which achieves 100% restorability in an arbitrary 2-connected network. To minimize the total spare capacity for single link failure protection, an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation is provided. We also develop a fast double-link failure restoration scheme by message signaling to take advantage of the scalable and distributed processing capability of tree structure.

Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Internet infrastructure. With WDM technology, signals are carried simultaneously on mUltiple wavelengths on a single fiber. WDM provides a practical approach of resolving the mismatch between the fiber ca pacity and the peak electronic processing speed. Mesh-based WDM networks have recently attracted much research and development interest since the In ternet topology is meshed in nature, and more importantly, mesh-based WDM networks are flexible with respect to routing and survivability. This book exam ines the management and survivability issues of mesh-based WDM networks and proposes new WDM network protocols and algorithms that could make telecommunication networks more efficient. Wavelength-routing has been one of the most important technologies to em ploy WDM in backbone networks. In wavelength-routed WDM networks, optical channels, which are referred to as lightpaths, are set up between WDM terminals. Most chapters of this bock are focused on various issues related to wavelength-routed networks, namely, routing and wavelength-assignment, con trol and management, fault management, and wavelength-converter placement. This book also presents an all-optical packet-switched network architecture based on the concept of photonic slot routing. The audience for this book are network designers and planners, research and development engineers active in the field of telecommunications, and students of optical networking at the graduate or senior undergraduate levels.
