Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Occupational Health is a concise, complete introduction to a vital-but often neglected-area in the field of health sciences. Work-related illnesses and injuries are critical concerns for every country and at every stage of economic development and an important determinant of health and financial security for working adults and their families. As a comprehensive textbook designed for students, professionals in public health, and occupational health practitioners who are working across international boundaries, this book will provide the reader with solid foundational knowledge of occupational health through the lens of economic development. Perfect for use as both a stand-alone text or as supplementary reading, this book addresses worker protection and the management of occupational health from rich industrialized countries to developing societies. The first section of the book concentrates on broad approaches and frameworks for the investigation and management of health in the workplace. The second section addresses important hazards. The third section addresses specific industry sectors, management challenges, and policies at the global level. Each chapter links occupational health to economic development concepts and future trends. The contributed chapters are authored by international experts in the field, enriched by boxed case studies and supportive concrete examples. This work sets a new standard for education in occupational health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizenship is not a spectator sport; it is all about engagement. From Slavery to Citizenship is part of a bigger picture - a development process which will enable us to gain more control over our own lives and to participate in decisions about the future direction of society and the organisations we are involved in. This book is unusual in suggesting that slavery is not a remote historical phenomenon, but a fundamental component of our present. People have been slaves in the past and some people are enslaved today. The subject of slavery is highly charged with emotion. From Slavery to Citizenship seeks to facilitate dialogue and to bridge gaps. This is not easy as people have been speaking different languages and working from diverse sets of assumptions. A first step is to listen and to learn from differences. In this book, a single author's voice brings together contributions from major public figures and respected thinkers. Within a rich tapestry of perspectives, there is no single line of argument, or one overall conclusion. There are contributions from Africa, North and South America, Western and Eastern Europe and Asia, and from discourses in work organisation, occupational health, psychiatry and human rights, as well as education. After reading the book, you are unlikely to conclude that all of the contributors have agreed, but you will find that they give you a starting point from which to reflect and begin discussion, as well as the tools to engage in active citizenship.

Book excerpt: This report is based on a survey of 32 Member States by the WHO Regional Office for Europe that began in 1983 and was completed in 1985. Information was collected from the countries' replies and from recent publications describing occupational health services in 21 countries. The survey clearly indicated the need to develop statistical and recording systems for these services in countries. Further, occupational health services in Europe are difficult to characterize as an entity because they vary remarkably widely between and within countries. Although occupational health services are better developed in the European Region than elsewhere, about 100 million workers in the Region still do their jobs with no services at all and another 100 million are covered by services that barely meet the ILO and WHO standards. In particular, some groups are seriously underserved.

Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Health at Work is an engaging re-assessment of workplace health, with particular emphasis on the neglected issues of the social context of the working environment and the impact on individuals of their workplaces. In looking at the historical context of the subject and at the concepts of health and illness, a selective series of thoughts emerge linking history, organizational development and health improvement. This text is comprehensive and unique in its multi-disciplinary analysis. It explores workplace health from its theoretical foundations and draws together the themes of occupational medicine, health and safety, workplace health development and occupational health.
