Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematic drainage of forest peatland can be a catalyst for stimulating black spruce and perhaps other vegetation to grow faster. This manual is designed to be a practical guide to field personnel in systematic peatland drainage for Ontario conditions, so that drainage projects can be initiated at the management unit level. Much of the material in the manual is based on Finnish experience which has been adapted for the boreal forest by Canadian foresters. Sections of the manual cover the following topics: site selection, systematic drainage planning, line clearing, drainage ditch construction, modifying forest drainage work with site preparation, sedimentation control, and drainage costs and productivity. A sample schedule for a typical peatland drainage project is included, as well as a glossary.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of soil water level on growth, biomass accretion, and inorganic element uptake by black spruce. One-year-old containerized seedlings were grown for 3 years at three water table depths. All trees survived for the duration of the study confirming that black spruce has a certain degree of survival tolerance to high water tables. However, tree height, diameter growth, and biomass production significantly increased as the depth to water table increased. The foliar levels of N, P, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, and B increased and those of Cu and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. For ash and Ca, differences were significant but did not follow a consistent trend. In shoots, the level of N, Ca, and Mg increased and those of ash, K, Fe, Cu, B, Al, and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. The level of P was not affected by the water table. In roots, the level of N and Ca increased and the level of ash, Mn, Fe, Al, and Cu decreased with increasing depth to the water table. The level of P, Mg, and Zn was significantly different but did not follow any trend. Foliar concentration of ash, Ca, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Al, and B increased and concentration of N, P, K, and Mg decreased with the increasing foliage age. In shoots, ash, Ca, Al, Fe, and Zn increased and N, P, K, Mg, and B decreased with the increasing tree and shoot age. In roots, Fe, Mn, Na, and Al increased and N, P, and Cu decreased with the increasing tree age.S3.

Book excerpt: Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P) is the dominant forest cover type in interior Alaska and is prone to frequent, stand-replacing wildfires. Through impacts on tree recruitment, the degree of fire consumption of soil organic layers can act as an important determinant of whether black spruce forests regenerate to a forest composition similar to the prefire forest, or to a new forest composition dominated by deciduous hardwoods. Here we present a simple, rule-based framework for predicting fire-initiated changes in forest cover within Alaska's black spruce forests. Four components are presented: (1) a key to classifying potential site moisture, (2) a summary of conditions that favor black spruce self-replacement, (3) a key to predicting postfire forest recovery in recently burned stands, and (4) an appendix of photos to be used as a visual reference tool. This report should be useful to managers in designing fire management actions and predicting the effects of recent and future fires on postfire forest cover in black spruce forests of interior Alaska.

Book excerpt: Begins with a literature review on the habitat, reproduction and establishment, and stand development of black spruce. This is followed by a review of thinning as a silvicultural system, and thinning of black spruce in particular. Concludes with a report of a case study of the growth response of black spruce to various levels of thinning. The study area had been burned by wildfire and is located in the Tyrol Lake Demonstration Forest near Lake Nipigon, Ontario.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was initiated to examine alternatives to Plonski's tables and Forest Resource Inventory for growth and yield prediction by using the recently developed Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC) and the extensive database of the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Co. Ltd., which has been collecting data from permanent sample plots on their limits since the 1930s. The study addressed the needs of forest level planning by grouping the 14 operational groups of the FEC system into three or four classes of similar productivity for forest level forecasting and evaluating the usefulness of the FEC system for forest productivity studies; by constructing density class yield curves and tables based on these productivity classes; by constructing yield curves based on the percentage of black spruce in the stands within each productivity class; by developing individual-tree local volume tables for black spruce; and by developing a site treatment matrix to help identify gaps in the database in terms of operational groups and treatments.

Book excerpt: Seedlings raised under steady-state nutrient loading conditions in the nursery may out-perform conventional seedlings in early growth after out-planting. This study estimates the long-term potential of enhanced reforestation using nutrient-loaded seedlings to increase carbon sequestration using black spruce plantations in northern Ontario as a case study. The study involved mathematical stand modelling procedures. Published early-growth data of out-planted nutrient-loaded & conventional seedlings were pooled to calibrate & select the fittest model for predicting growth of maturing plantations. Tree height estimates were converted to biomass & carbon content to express post-planting response of nursery nutrient loading on future plantation productivity & carbon sequestration.
