Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first on industrial relations research methods, comes at a time when the field of industrial relations is in flux and research strategy has become more complex and varied. Research that once focused on the relationship between labor and management now involves a wider range of issues. This change has raised a number of key questions about how research should be done. The contributors represent four countries and a range of fields, including economics, sociology, psychology, law, history, and industrial relations. They identify distinctive research strategies and suggest approaches that might be appropriate in the future. Among their concerns are the relative value of qualitative and quantitative methods, of using primary and secondary data, and of single versus multimethod techniques.

The editors have assembled a top-flight group of authors and the end-product is an encompassing state-of-the-art review of the industrial relations field′ - Professor Bruce E Kaufman, AYSPS, Georgia State University ′This Handbook will quickly become the standard reference in industrial relations research. It provides the most comprehensive and challenging presentation of the key theoretical debates and topics of research that will shape our field well into the 21st century. All who wish to contribute to this field will need to read this volume and then build on what these authors have to say′ - Professor Thomas A. Kochan, MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research ′This authoritative panorama of the field demonstrates the contemporary vitality, breadth and critical depth of industrial relations scholarship and research. Thirty-four stimulating essays, by an international blend of leading academics, expertly review the analytical and empirical state of play across all aspects of industrial relations enquiry. In doing so, a rich agenda for further scholarly endeavour emerges′ - Paul Marginson, University of Warwick Over the last two decades, a number of factors have converged to produce a major rethink about the field of Industrial Relations. Globalization, the decline of trade unions, the spread of high performance work systems and the emergence of a more feminized, flexible work-force have opened new avenues of inquiry. The SAGE Handbook of Industrial Relations charts these changes and analyzes them. It provides a systematic, comprehensive survey of the field. The book is organized into four interrelated sections: " Theorizing Industrial Relations " The changing institutions that shape employment practice " The processes used by governments, employers and unions " Income inequality, employee wellbeing, business performance and national comparative advantages The result is a work of unprecedented scope and unparalleled ambition. It offers a compete guide to the central debates, new developments and emerging themes in the field. It will quickly be recognized as the indispensable reference for Teachers, Students and Researchers. It is relevant to economists, lawyers, sociologists, business and management researchers and Industrial Relations specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Whalen's book identifies avenues leading to the revitalization of industrial relations as an academic discipline. The contributors, a stellar assemblage of the field's leading scholars, demonstrate there is much work to be done: the scope and intellectual content of industrial relations need to be reconsidered; academic and social institutions must be reshaped; and, new conceptual and practical issues demand attention. The authors of the present volume examine a broad range of issues. Some chapters in this book explore the conceptual boundaries and core assumptions of the field; others examine topics including industrial relations law, social capital and industrial relations institutions, changes to the field's academic curricula, the impact of the structure of academic departments on industrial relations scholarship, the state of labor and employment journals, and new approaches to the integration of teaching and community service. There is a wrap-up chapter by MIT's Thomas Kochan that ties all this together and presents additional insights on the revitalization of the field. Industrial relations scholars, labor studies, sociology and business professors as well as many practitioners will find much to recommend in this book.

How to develop an appropriate methodological choice according to the peculiarities of a research subject in in working relationships? What are the mechanisms convened to identify the studied reality in human resources management? From the top of his professional background and expertise, the author guides us here through the meanders of research in industrial relations and business administration.Indeed, graduate students should find in this book the material needed, to prepare them for the labyrinth of research (from collection to data analysis), teachers and professors will find here a renewed and adapted tool (according to the use that will be made), to familiarize their students with the essential concepts to allow them to develop their own methodological considerations. Also, general public and professionals wishing to improve their personal approach in writing and / or analyzing scientific reports will find real opportunities for personal development; because reading is largely facilitated by a synthetic style, not hesitating to give life to the words with the help of numerous illustrations. In short, in this book, students, researchers, teachers, officials, managers, academic, general public, professional and the curious will appreciate the clear presentation of the fundamentals of research, as well as the way in which the usefulness of concepts in general is established.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Decade of Industrial Relations Research, 1946-1956 In 1948, in the American Economic Association's Survey of Con temporary Economics, Lloyd Reynolds authored a 33-page chapter summarizing contributions to the state of knowledge in the field of labor economics and, to a lesser extent, industrial relations since the early thirties. It was somehow appropriate that during his term as president of the Industrial Relations Research Association that organization should have initiated a survey of the research con tributions to this field in the postwar decade. Although it was originally intended that this survey should be compressed within a single volume, it soon became apparent that if the numerous subdivisions of the field were to be treated ade quately, two volumes would be needed. This is the first volume. The second will appear at a later date, under' different editorial super vision. The only basis for the selection of the six areas here surveyed is that a considerable amount of research has been done in each. They have not been chosen for review because they are logically related, nor has any effort been made to achieve a symmetry of coverage. Thus Union Government and Union Leadership, our Chapter One, has not been balanced by a comparable chapter on business be cause not so much relevant research has been done on this topic. By the time of the second volume it is possible that a more signi ficant chapter can be written on this aspect of industrial relations.
