This book discusses the features of the time-dependent solution of the Kramer–Chandrasekhar equation. Organized into 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the deexcitation process of a highly excited nucleus by means of its decay into two fragments. This text then presents a microscopic description to extract the characteristics features of the collective dynamics of the fission process at low energy. Other chapters consider nuclear fission as a transport process over the fission barrier. This book discusses as well the microscopic foundations of the phenomenological collective models. The final chapter deals with the composition of the baryons and mesons in terms of gluons and quarks. This book is a valuable resource for nuclear and high energy physicists. Experimentalists, theoreticians, and research workers will also find this book useful.

On the one hand, we desire to learn about the properties of nuclear matter under abnormal conditions, in this energy domain, predominately low densities. This purpose runs abreast of the second, which is the study of the relevant reaction mechanisms. The two objectives are inexorably linked because our experimental laboratory for studying nuclear matter properties is a dynamic one. We are forced to ask how nuclear matter properties, such as phase transitions, are reflected in the dynamics of the reactions. It may be that irrefutable information about nuclear matter will not be extracted from the reaction work. Nevertheless, we are compelled to undertake this effort not only because it is the only game in town and as yet we do not know that information cannot be extracted, but also because of our second objective. The process leads to an understanding of the reaction mechanism themselves and therefore to the response characteristics of finite, perhaps non-equilibrium, strongly interacting systems. Our program has been: To study energy, mass, and angular momentum deposition by studying incomplete fusion reactions. To gain confidence that we understand how highly excited systems decompose by studying all emissions from the highly excited systems. To push these kinds of studies into the intermediate energy domain, with excitation function studies. And attempt to learn about the dynamics of the decays using particle-particle correlations. In the last effort, we have decided to focus on simple systems, where we believe, definitive statements are possible. These avenues of research share a common theme, large complex fragment production.

This work has two foci: the properties of nuclear matter under abnormal conditions, in this energy domain, predominately low densities and the study of the relevant reaction mechanisms. The process leads to an understanding of the reaction mechanism themselves and therefore to the response characteristics of finite, perhaps non-equilibrium, strongly interacting systems. The last effort focuses on simple systems, where definitive statements are possible. These avenues of research share a common theme, large complex fragment production. It is this feature, more than any other, which distinguishes the intermediate energy domain.

This work has two foci. First, the authors desired to learn about the properties of both nuclei and nuclear matter under abnormal conditions. Their efforts towards this end run abreast of those for their second focus which is the study of the relevant reaction mechanisms. The two objectives are inexorably linked because their experimental laboratory for studying nuclear properties is a dynamic one. Their task is to answer the questions of how nuclear and nuclear matter properties are reflected in the dynamics of the reactions. The second objective also has great intrinsic value in that they can anticipate improving upon their understanding of the reaction mechanism themselves and therefore to the response characteristics of finite, perhaps non-equilibrium, strongly interacting systems. The program has been: to study the dynamics of fusion reactions, specifically the dynamics of energy, mass, and angular momentum deposition. This work includes reactions near the Coulomb barrier, where fusion dominates the reaction cross section as well as higher energies where incomplete fusion reactions are the primary reactions. This includes the dynamics of fission, still the premier example of collective nuclear motion, as a function of excitation, spin, mass, and mass asymmetry. The authors push these kinds of studies into the intermediate energy domain, and where novel reaction scenarios are predicted. They have studied very central and peripheral collisions between very massive nuclei, and simplified projectile fragmentation reactions utilizing medium to light mass projectiles. The study of central collisions has shown us the importance of collective expansion. The study of peripheral collisions between very heavy nuclei has demonstrated the importance of dynamical production of fragments from the neck region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy-ion reactions are affected by the nuclear structure of the reactants and other dynamical processes during the collision. Theoretical studies of such reactions lead to a clearer understanding of prohibitive mechanisms to heavy-ion fusion. One application of this is superheavy element formation, where quasifission is the major competing process to the formation of a compound nucleus in this region of the nuclear chart. Microscopic approaches that use mean field approximations, such as the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory, have been increasingly used to study low energy heavy-ion reactions. In addition to reactions, nuclear structure properties can also be studied with microscopic theory. Such approaches do not require empirical knowledge of the nucleus and can be used as a predictive tool for studying structure or reactions involving exotic nuclei. In this thesis, TDHF is used to study nuclear vibrations and heavy-ion reactions at near barrier energies. The TDHF approach is applied first to a systematic study of low-lying octupole and quadrupole vibrational modes of {40-54}Ca isotopes. Then, fusion reactions are calcuated for Ca+Sn systems, using the barrier energy as the main observable. Fusion reactions are first calculated with no couplings (static HF calculations) before including all dynamics that the mean field approximation offers (TDHF calculations). The addition of dynamics often results in a lower fusion barrier compared to the static barrier, with the exception of systems involving the neutron rich {52,54}Ca projectiles. The difference in fusion barriers between the two sets of calculations are explored by considering couplings to vibrational states and transfer channels. To separate the effects of individual couplings, the coupled-channels approach is used with the HF calculations of the vibrational states as inputs. Such couplings account for most of the lowering of the static barrier. For the most neutron rich systems, coupling to vibrational states does not account for the dynamical barrier increase. Transfer channels, in particular proton pickup, are explored within TDHF and may play a role in this increased barrier energy. Following from fusion reactions, the factors and dynamics that may hinder fusion in heavier systems are studied in the reactions 48Ca, 50Ti, 52Cr, 54Fe, 56,64Ni, 58Zn+208Pb at energies ranging from 0% to 30% above the static HF barrier. Although most of these systems fuse at energies within this range, some systems reseparate for which emission of nucleons was apparent at scission point. The contact times were in most cases less than 10 zs and the attempt at $N/Z$ equilibration of these systems happen on fast time scales (1-2 zs). Larger amounts of mass transfer occur in systems with longer neck times and fewer magic numbers such as 34S+232Th and Cr+Pt systems that were also calculated for comparison. Further studies are required to better understand the role of shell effects as well as nucleon emission in quasifission reactions, and subsequently reactions leading to superheavy element formation.

DCM is used to study the decay of excited (hot and rotating) compound systems formed in low energy heavy ion reactions, including the deformations and orientations degrees of freedom for reactants/products. To study the ground state decays, the exotic cluster radioactivity, we have used the Pre-formed Cluster-decay Model (PCM), which also includes the deformation and orientation effects of daughter and cluster nuclei. We have studied the possible decay modes of various nuclear systems. The reaction dynamics of hot and rotating light as well as heavier compound systems at low energies have been studied extensively. It is relevant to mention here that the experimental studies have started analyzing the role of orientation degrees of freedom for deformed nuclei in the measured fusion-fission cross-sections, though the use/identification of the actually polarized nuclei is still to be realized. Such studies will help explore the yet unknown landscapes in order to approach towards the island of stability' and to extend the periodic table further.

Book excerpt: Combining elastic and inelastic processes with transfer reactions, this two-part volume explores how these events affect heavy ion collisions. Special attention is given to processes involving the transfer of two nucleons, which are specific for probing pairing correlations in nuclei. This novel treatment provides, together with the description of surface vibration and rotations, a unified picture of heavy ion reactions in terms of the elementary modes of nuclear excitation. Heavy Ion Reactions is essential reading for beginning graduate students as well as experienced researchers.
