Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Fishes, Mammals and Herpetofauna of the Colorado River and Adjacent Riparian Areas of the Grand Canyon National Park The senior author made six float trips down the Colorado River before engaging in a contract with the National Park Service. The first trip was taken in September 1970, starting at Lee's Ferry and terminating at Phantom Ranch. The next four float trips, August 1971, July 1972, May 1973, and August 1973, started at Lee's Ferry and ended at Temple Bar on the south shore of Mead Reservoir. The Sixth trip, May 1974, started at Lee's Ferry and terminated at Diamond Creek. Biological Specimens of the various groups were collected during these six trips and data from these Specimens are included in this report. Most of our effort was directed toward fishes and mammals during these early trips, for example 35 of the 112 fish collections and 36 of the 82 mammal collections were obtained during the six trips. The trips with the commercial river runners would have been much less productive were it not for the understanding and help given by a few boatmen. Outstanding in this regard was Patrick Conley. Seventy-five percent of those species were found nowhere else in the world. Settlement of the lower basin brought dramatic change to both the river and its native fish. Those changes began more than 120 years ago as settlers began stocking nonnative fishes. By 1930, nonnative fish had spread throughout the lower basin and replaced native communities. All resemblance of historic river conditions faded with the construction of Hoover Dam in 1935 and other large water development projects. Today, few remember what the Colorado River was really like. Seven of the nine mainstream fishes are now Federally-protected as endangered. Federal and state agencies are attempting to recover these fish. However, progress has been frustrated due to the severity of human impact. This report represents testimony, old descriptions, and photographs describing the changes that have taken place in hopes that it will provide managers, biologists, and the interested public a better appreciation of the environment that shaped these unique fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive new book replaces and substantially expands upon the landmark Fishes of Arizona, which has been the authoritative source since it was first published in 1973. Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest is a one-volume guide to native and non-native fishes of the lower Colorado River basin, downstream from the Grand Canyon, and of the northern tributaries of the Sea of Cortez in the United States and Mexico. In all, there are in-depth accounts of more than 165 species representing 30 families. The book is not limited to the fish. It provides insights into their aquatic world with information on topography, drainage relations, climate, geology, vegetational history, aquatic habitats, human-made water systems, and conservation. A section of the book is devoted to fish identification, with keys to native and non-native families as well as family keys to species. The book is illustrated with more than 120 black-and-white illustrations, 47 full-color plates of native fishes, and nearly 40 maps and figures. Many native fish species are unique to the Southwest. They possess interesting and unusual adaptations to the challenges of the region, able to survive silt-laden floods as well as extreme water temperatures and highly fluctuating water flows ranging from very low levels to flash floods. However, in spite of being well-adapted, many of the fish described here are threatened or endangered, often due to the acts of humans who have altered the natural habitat. For that reason, Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest presents a vast amount of information about the ecological relationships between the fishes it describes and their environments, paying particular attention to the ways in which human interactions have modified aquatic ecosystemsÑand to how humans might work to ensure the survival of rapidly disappearing native species.

Book excerpt: Identifying areas of scientific uncertainty is a critical step in the adaptive management process (Walters, 1986; Runge and others, 2011a). To identify key areas of scientific uncertainty regarding biological resources of importance to the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program, the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) convened Knowledge Assessment Workshops in May and July 2005. One of the products of these workshops was a set of strategic science questions that highlighted key areas of scientific uncertainty. These questions were intended to frame and guide the research and monitoring activities conducted by the GCMRC in subsequent years. Questions were developed collaboratively by scientists and managers. The questions were not all of equal importance or merit—some questions were large scale and others were small scale. Nevertheless, these questions were adopted and have guided the research and monitoring efforts conducted by the GCMRC since 2005.

Book excerpt: Amphibians and Reptiles in Colorado, Second Edition, is an up-to-date, definitive summary of the distribution, conservation status, habitat, behavior, life history, ecology, and taxonomy of all salamanders, frogs, turtles, lizards, and snakes known to inhabit Colorado. It includes a description of the Colorado landscape, color photographs of each species, detailed range maps, identification keys, and tips on how to find, study, and photograph amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the author addresses the impact of human behavior on the region's herpetofauna, as well as the impact of Colorado's amphibians and reptiles upon humans. Covering the western part of the central Great Plains, the southern Rocky Mountains, and the canyons, mesas, and plains of the upper Colorado River basin, Amphibians and Reptiles in Colorado will be a useful resource for adjacent states such as Wyoming and eastern Utah. With more than 200 color photographs to aid the reader in identification, this book is both an ideal reference work for those interested in the herpetofauna of the region and an invaluable field guide for hikers, amateur naturalists, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Mammals and Birds of the Lower Colorado Valley: With Especial Reference to the Distributional Problems Presented The obvious principle has been followed. That no generalized treat ment of a concrete subject like geographic distribution is justifiable upon any but the soundest basis of systematic analysis. Because of the close dependence of most mammals and birds upon plants the latter have an important place in any treatment of animal distribution. The set of plants secured by the Colorado River Expedi tion has been named by Professor H. M. Hall, of the University of California. Names so provided are used throughout the present paper, particularly in the discussion of associational areas. My sincere acknowledgements are hereby extended. To Professor Charles H. Gilbert, Department of Zoology, Leland Stanford Junior University, and to Professor Charles A: Kofoid, Department of Zoology, University of California, for critical suggestions concern ing general considerations; to Professor H. M. Hall, of the University of California, for critical reading of the chapter on associations; and to Messrs. Harry S. Swarth and Walter P. Taylor, fellow staff members in the California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, for help from time to time on many points of detail.
