Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results presented in this executive summary are based on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data from invasive isolates reported to the Central Asian and European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (CAESAR) and the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net) in 2021 (data referring to 2020). Twelve countries and Kosovo reported data to CAESAR, while 29 countries, including all from the European Union (EU) and two from the European Economic Area (EEA) (Iceland and Norway), reported data to EARS-Net. While the EARS-Net and CAESAR networks use comparable methods for data collection and analysis, the results presented in this executive summary originate from distinct country/area surveillance systems. As these inherently are influenced by specific protocols and practices, caution is advised when comparing countries/ areas in terms of AMR patterns.

Book Synopsis Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance in Europe by :
Download or read book Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance in Europe written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results presented in this report are based on antimicrobial resistance data from invasive isolates reported to EARS-Net by 30 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries in 2017 (data referring to 2016), and on trend analyses of data reported by the participating countries for the period 2013 to 2016. As in previous years, the antimicrobial resistance situation in Europe displays wide variations depending on the bacterial species, antimicrobial group and geographical region. For several bacterial species-antimicrobial group combinations, a north-to-south and a west-to-east gradient is evident in Europe. In general, lower resistance percentages were reported by countries in the north while higher percentages were reported in the south and east of Europe. These differences are most likely related to variations in antimicrobial use, infection prevention and control practices, and dissimilarities in diagnostic and healthcare utilisation patterns in the countries. For E. coli, significant increases in the EU/EEA population- weighted mean percentages for third-generation cephalosporin resistance and aminoglycoside resistance, as well as for combined resistance to three key antimicrobial groups (fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins and aminoglycosides) were observed for the period 2013 to 2016. This is a continuation of the increasing trends reported by EARS-Net in previous years. By contrast, there was some indication that the overall resistance situation for K. pneumoniae was stabilising at the EU/EEA level during the same period. There were small though significant decreases in the EU/EEA population- weighted mean percentages for K. pneumoniae between 2013 and 2016 for most antimicrobial groups under regular surveillance, with the notable exception of carbapenem resistance. However, at the individual country level, the same encouraging development was not always seen, and increasing resistance percentages in K. pneumoniae were reported from several countries, mainly those with comparatively high resistance.

This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHO has launched new guidelines on use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals, recommending that farmers and the food industry stop using antibiotics routinely to promote growth and prevent disease in healthy animals. These guidelines aim to help preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics that are important for human medicine by reducing their use in animals.

Book Synopsis Antimicrobial Resistance in Developing Countries by : Aníbal de J. Sosa
Download or read book Antimicrobial Resistance in Developing Countries written by Aníbal de J. Sosa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoiding infection has always been expensive. Some human populations escaped tropical infections by migrating into cold climates but then had to procure fuel, warm clothing, durable housing, and crops from a short growing season. Waterborne infections were averted by owning your own well or supporting a community reservoir. Everyone got vaccines in rich countries, while people in others got them later if at all. Antimicrobial agents seemed at first to be an exception. They did not need to be delivered through a cold chain and to everyone, as vaccines did. They had to be given only to infected patients and often then as relatively cheap injectables or pills off a shelf for only a few days to get astonishing cures. Antimicrobials not only were better than most other innovations but also reached more of the world’s people sooner. The problem appeared later. After each new antimicrobial became widely used, genes expressing resistance to it began to emerge and spread through bacterial populations. Patients infected with bacteria expressing such resistance genes then failed treatment and remained infected or died. Growing resistance to antimicrobial agents began to take away more and more of the cures that the agents had brought.
Book Synopsis Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In May 2015, the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly adopted the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance, which reflects the global consensus that AMR poses a profound threat to human health. One of the five strategic objectives of the Global action plan is to strengthen the evidence base through enhanced global surveillance and research. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) has been developed to facilitate and encourage a standardized approach to AMR surveillance globally and in turn support the implementation of the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance. This manual addresses the early phase of implementation of GLASS, focussing on surveillance of resistance in common human bacterial pathogens. The intended readership of this publication is public health professionals and health authorities responsible for national AMR surveillance. It outlines the GLASS standards and describes the road map for implementation of the system between 2015 and 2019. Further development of GLASS will be based on the lessons learnt during this period"--Publisher's description.
