Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Lyndon H. Hart III, Pub. 1983, Reprinted 2016, 182 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-325-9. Surry County was created in 1652 from James City County. Due to the lost of court records of many surrounding counties, such as Charles City, Dinwiddle, James City, and Prince George, the records of Surry county take on a more profound importance because of the early movement across county lines and the James River. This book contains not only wills of individuals, but also guardians and administrators bonds; bastardy, apprentice, trustees, sheriffs and treasurers bonds, and inventories of estates. The names of approximately 7,000 persons are found in these legal records of this important county.

Gunsmiths were found nearly everywhere: in port towns along the coast, in settled inland areas, and - probably the busiest ones - on the frontier. As with most craftsmen, many of these men remain obscure. They left little trace and the records reveal their names only incidentally. With the revolutionary war, gunsmiths of unusual ability appeared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of how colour intersected with polity, society and economy in the nineteenth century South. Although legal historians have explored how early Americans legally defined and contested race, that literature has overlooked or downplayed the middle ground occupied by a sizeable mixed-race population of antebellum free people. These were the 'talented tenth' long before W.E.B. Dubois coined the term.

Download or read book Family Bonds written by Ted Maris-Wolf and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1854 and 1864, more than a hundred free African Americans in Virginia proposed to enslave themselves and, in some cases, their children. Ted Maris-Wolf explains this phenomenon as a response to state legislation that forced free African Americans to make a terrible choice: leave enslaved loved ones behind for freedom elsewhere or seek a way to remain in their communities, even by renouncing legal freedom. Maris-Wolf paints an intimate portrait of these people whose lives, liberty, and use of Virginia law offer new understandings of race and place in the upper South. Maris-Wolf shows how free African Americans quietly challenged prevailing notions of racial restriction and exclusion, weaving themselves into the social and economic fabric of their neighborhoods and claiming, through unconventional or counterintuitive means, certain basic rights of residency and family. Employing records from nearly every Virginia county, he pieces together the remarkable lives of Watkins Love, Jane Payne, and other African Americans who made themselves essential parts of their communities and, in some cases, gave up their legal freedom in order to maintain family and community ties.
