Book excerpt: In this 2-volume edition of Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America experts in the surgical management of the nasal airway address the range of anatomic abnormalities that contribute to nasal obstruction, and describe in detail the surgical methods available for treatment of these problems. In Volume 1, expert rhinologists address sinonasal aspects of surgery for nasal obstruction. In Volume 2, experts in rhinoplasty describe surgical interventions for nasal obstruction from a facial plastic surgery perspective. Together, these two volumes should increase the otolaryngologist's armamentarium for the comprehensive surgical management of nasal airway obstruction. Many aspects of nasal airway obstruction may be mitigated by medical management alone. For instance, swelling from allergic rhinitis typically responds well to allergy treatment. In a number of cases, however, medical intervention is insufficient. When medical management fails, and anatomic abnormalities contribute significantly to nasal obstruction, surgical intervention may be indicated. Septal deviation, turbinate hypertrophy, internal and external nasal valve collapse, sinusitis, polyps, encephaloceles, and tumors are just a few of the varied sources of nasal obstruction. Equally diverse are the surgical means available to the contemporary otolaryngologist to address these anatomic abnormalities.

Book excerpt: Otorhinolaryngologists and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons who have focused their energies on functional and cosmetic septorhinoplasty do offer a unique perspective and experience of the surgical management of nasal obstruction, and this perspective is highlighted in this edition. Many of the chapters focus on complex problems related to the septum: treating the caudal septum, a discussion of complications of septal surgery including their avoidance and their management, and when to consider the open rhinoplasty approach to septal surgery. Surgical pearls for septoplasty are also considered. Functional rhinoplasty also naturally receives significant attention in this edition, with consideration of the surgical treatment of the saddle nose, treatment of nasal obstruction in the traumatized nose, treatment of the dorsal deviation, and surgical and non-surgical treatment of the nasal valve. Piriform aperture stenosis, a less common form of nasal obstruction, is also considered. A number of facial plastic surgical case studies round out this edition.

Since the quality of life for patients afflicted with this condition decreases, such patients frequently seek medical help. Further, the relationship between the upper and lower respiratory tract makes the treatment of nasal polyposis of critical importance. New research findings, as well as new technical developments, have changed the conventional medical and surgical approaches to treating nasal polyposis, the result of which has been significant advances in the management of the disease. This book, written by authors internationally recognized for their laboratory research and clinical practice, is lavishly illustrated and reader-friendly. It includes the latest information on nasal polyposis, and aims to help the reader improve the daily management of patients affected by this condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Nasal Obstruction This little work contains the substance of three Clinical Lectures delivered in connection with the Throat Department at St. George's Hospital in the year 1900. The subject is a very common and important one. Patients suffering from these conditions are constantly coming before the notice of busy practitioners, who have scant leisure for studying large and comprehensive treatises. The ignoring of nasal complaints in the past has led to a kind of surgical revival, which has engendered undue zeal and frequency in operating. The opinions promulgated in these Lectures, though differing from much of the practice of the day, are the result of personal observation and the experience of a large number of cases. Estimation of the necessity for operating is carefully discussed. Space will not permit of the full discussion of a matter which I feel is urgently in need of further surgical investigation, the diagnosis and effective treatment of sinus suppuration in association with polypi.
