Book excerpt: It is the middle of the nineteenth century and Anne Rose is an independent young woman who is intent on leaving a loveless engagement behind and becoming a surgeon in England. After she purchases a ticket on a steamship to Cairo under a false name, she lies to several passengers and tells them she is heading to Egypt to join her father. But then moments later, she fibs again and tells other passengers she is meeting her professor husband. Richard Lawrence has been traveling to Cairo for the past decade to deliver expedition groups to Cairo as part of his job at a British museum. After he is introduced to Anne on the ship, he is immediately drawn to her, but suspicious of her conflicting stories about her life. As the two-week voyage begins and an unexpected medical event brings them together, their chemistry heightens when Anne reveals the real reasons why she is traveling to Cairo. Will their burgeoning feelings for each other be enough to survive their challenges and propel her down a path toward her dream? In this historical novel, a young woman with a big dream of becoming a surgeon in nineteenth century England must reconcile with her past as her path crosses with a handsome suitor.
Book Synopsis Cancer Stories by : David M. Gregory
Download or read book Cancer Stories written by David M. Gregory and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-11-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cancer Stories five people share their journeys, their stories, and the suffering they faced before their deaths. These narratives chronicle the despair, hope, and love they experienced while living and dying with cancer, giving the power of the human spirit full voice. Lessons learned are presented as "gifts" at the conclusion of each of the five narratives. This book is for people living with the disease and their caregivers. Nurses and physicians, students in any health-related discipline, as well as persons engaged in qualitative research will also find this an invaluable resource. The importance of incorporating qualitative, research-based approaches in caring for the dying emerges from the narratives. Cancer Stories points toward a more holistic research/treatment agenda, one that bridges the medical and social sciences.

Book Synopsis Singular Intimacies by : Danielle Ofri, MD
Download or read book Singular Intimacies written by Danielle Ofri, MD and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “finely gifted writer” shares “fifteen brilliantly written episodes covering the years from studenthood to the end of medical residency” (Oliver Sacks, MD, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat) Singular Intimacies is the story of becoming a doctor by immersion at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country—and perhaps the most legendary. It is both the classic inner-city hospital and a unique amalgam of history, insanity, beauty, and intellect. When Danielle Ofri enters these 250-year-old doors as a tentative medical student, she is immediately plunged into the teeming world of urban medicine: mysterious illnesses, life-and-death decisions, patients speaking any one of a dozen languages, and overworked interns devising creative strategies to cope with the feverish intensity of a big-city hospital. Yet the emphasis of Singular Intimacies is not so much on the arduous hours in medical training (which certainly exist here), but on the evolution of an instinct for healing. In a hospital without the luxury of private physicians, where patients lack resources both financial and societal, where poverty and social strife are as much a part of the pathology as any microbe, it is the medical students and interns who are thrust into the searing intimacy that is the doctor-patient relationship. In each memorable chapter, Ofri’s progress toward becoming an experienced healer introduces not just a patient in medical crisis, but a human being with an intricate and compelling history. Ofri learns to navigate the tangled vulnerabilities of doctor and patient—not to simply battle the disease.
Book Synopsis Are You Kidding Me? by : Lucy Morrison
Download or read book Are You Kidding Me? written by Lucy Morrison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book is about being diagnosed with breast cancer and all the wonderful games I got to play. It starts out with the mammogram and further testing and continues with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. I was fortunate to have a less-invasive type of cancer and didnt need the kind of chemotherapy that makes your hair fall out, but I still had problems. I am a nurse, but I was unaware of most of the processes involved in the treatment of breast cancer. I did learn a lot about diagnosis, testing, and prognosis of different types of breast cancer. I also learned a lot about being the patient and how easy it is to get lost in the shuffle. The treatment has become routine for some of the caregivers, and it is easy to get treated like a disease and not a person. I wanted to share my experience to hopefully help others be able to fight for and demand the best treatment for themselves.
Book Synopsis Schein's Common Sense Prevention and Management of Surgical Complications by : Moshe Schein,
Download or read book Schein's Common Sense Prevention and Management of Surgical Complications written by Moshe Schein, and published by tfm Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enthusiastic feedback received from readers of the international bestseller Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery (now in its 3rd edition, translated to seven languages; Springer Verlag; ISBN 9783540748205) inspired the editors to do a similar book dedicated to surgical complications: practical, non-formal, internationally relevant (in all types of practice and levels of hospitals) – and definitely not politically correct: what is considered taboo by others is not taboo for us; here we discuss everything! As in the editors’ previous book, the use of references is restricted to the absolute minimum, and citing figures and percentages is avoided as much as possible. The chapters in this book are the opinion of experts – each contributor has a vast personal knowledge and clinical experience in the field he is writing about. This book will help all surgeons (and their patients), avoid the misery of complications, and will provide advice on the management of those that are unavoidable. Complications and death are an integral component of surgery. Surgeons have to look death in the eyes, try to prevent it and vanquish it – this is what this book is all about. "Schein’s books are always terrific reads, conveying pithy observations and practical advice and doing so with wit and scholarship. This latest is surely a must for every surgeon’s bookshelf." Abraham Verghese MD, author of CUTTING FOR STONE
