Carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays attached to solid substrates resemble a nano-carpet and have potentials in a variety of devices. In this study, the focus is to investigate the surface modification approaches of CNT carpets on flat (compressed) graphite. Wettability, or permeation of a liquid such as water into the CNT strands, may play very significant roles in many applications where a CNT-coated device may be used in aqueous environment. Short-term microwave plasma treatments were used in this project to functionalize CNT carpets for wettability. Hydrophilic/ hydrophobic behavior, measured by the contact angle of water, could be well tuned by controlling the exposure time. A simple method to reverse the changes caused by plasma is to anneal in air at a temperature of 110 °C. The CNT carpets could be cycled between hydrophobic and hydrophilic by repeated treatments of plasma and air annealing. The extent and ease of cycling depended on the morphology of the CNT carpets. We investigated the influence of surface nanostructure, morphology and surface chemistry on wettability. Nanostructure and morphology of CNT arrays was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The chemical composition of the surface was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Pure CNT carpets are superhydrophobic (contact angle > 160°) as long as they are well aligned and do not contain covalently bonded oxygen groups. Superhydrophobicity may be lost, or contact angle decreased, if either alignment of CNTs is disturbed or covalent oxygen-containing groups bind to its surface. Young’s, Wenzel’s and Cassie-Baxter regimes are three models of contact angle that are used to explain these observations. The wetting state and contact angle of hydrophobic CNT arrays were compared with the values predicted by Cassie-Baxter equation on pristine CNT carpets. The morphological parameter was obtained by measuring multiscale dimensions of CNT carpets from SEM images. The chemical parameter represented by inherent contact angle was obtained by measuring contact angle on the graphitic materials, and reviewing the literature values reported on graphite and graphene surfaces. As an example of how wettability may influence an engineering property such as water flow, CNT arrays were synthesized on carbon fiber cloth. The flow of water through this porous fabric was tested. It was seen that water flow was enhanced by CNT attachment, which may be attributed to drag reduction on super-hydrophobic surface. However, making the CNT carpets fully hydrophilic through plasma treatment seemed to further increase overall water flow rates, which may raise the possibility of capillary transport through hydrophilic nano-carpet. These effects need to be investigated more carefully in future for better understanding.

Given a particular local environment, these 'natural designs' are intrinsically multifunctional, responsive to external stimuli, biocompatible, biodegradable, energy efficient and effective. One common challenge these natural fibrillar systems have to deal with is the presence of environmental water in all its three forms (i.e., vapor, liquid or solid) surrounding their habitats. This offers intriguing design inspirations for human engineering in energy, biomedical, and environmental remediation related applications. At the core of nanoscience and nanotechnology, rationally mimicking nature offers a promising route to create multifunctional superstructures that capture organisms and biological materials' intriguing responsive and self-adjusting properties. Carbon nanomaterials (e.g., carbon quantum dots, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene) have been widely investigated as advanced high performance structural and functional materials. Due to their high specific surface area, excellent electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, carbon nanomaterials are viewed as the ideal building blocks for achieving multi-functionality in the practice of biomimicry. Dry adhesives based on vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays have shown remarkable adhesive strength (i.e., 10 times higher than that of geckos). However, little is known with regard to their wettability at the ultimate atomistic level, and how this may influence the adhesive performance and self-cleaning capabilities, despite water condensation and bridging have proven to be common phenomena at this length scale. Hence, using the CNTs and graphene as a microcosm example, this project focuses on on two critical issues: i) understanding how the nanostructures influence the properties and behavior of water nanodroplets, and ii) how water nanodroplets influence the nano mechanics of the nanostructures. The research findings have important implications in dry fibrillar adhesion, self-cleaning, water collection and purification, as well as seawater desalination applications.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the role of surface nano-structuring in fluid separation. It is hypothesized that hierarchical carbon structures consisting of aligned carbon nanotube arrays strongly adhered to the surface of porous carbon solids such as fabric and foam, can be used for separation of polar and non-polar fluids by selective wettability of one fluid and rejection of another. The vertically-aligned carbon nanotube arrays,as synthesized, possess super hydrophobicity demonstrated by high water contact angle on their surfaces. On the other hand, they are incredibly oleophilic, showing a high affinity to adsorb oil. These properties make it possible for the carbon nanotube arrays to adsorb and reject certain liquids based on their polarity selectively. By investigating the wettability of these hierarchical structures with water and variety of model oils, initially in the presence of air, and later in the presence of each other, we demonstrate that selective capillary-based devices are thermodynamically possible under different conditions. We have measured the sorption capacity of the model oils in this study, and we have shown the increase in sorption capacity by the specific surface area. We have also shown that adsorption in multiple cycles does not decrease the sorption capacity for these structures, and therefore, they have the potential to be used multiple times without losing their efficiency. Finally, we investigated the selective wettability and separation phenomena of oil-water mixtures, with and without surfactants. These studies show the capabilities and practical limitations of these porous hierarchical structures in the separation of oil from water. We suggest that porosity control of the substrates and controlling the direction of the liquid flow could be an essential part of the future studies for making these structures more effective membranes.
