This book was released on 1950 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Various methods have been employed for the determination of surface tension including capillary rise, drop weight, maximum bubble pressure, sessile drops on flat surfaces, sessile bubbles formed underneath flat surfaces, and the shape of pendent drops. Each method is subject to characteristic advantages and disadvantages. Only two of these will be discussed. The method of maximum bubble pressure allows the formation of a fresh surface for every bubble but does not permit the study of a given sample over a period of time. The sessile drop in direct contrast, allows the observation of the same sample over any period of time, but retains the same surface for the entire run. This is not considered a serious objection, since Burden has shown in the case of mercury in contact with hydrogen, that the adsorption of the monolayer of gas from the protective atmosphere takes place in the period of time required for the formation of the new surface. If this condition exists for the other molten metals in contact with hydrogen, no great benefit is to be derived from the formation of a new surface for each determination. The sessile drop was chosen for this experiment because, as has been mentioned, it is possible for this method to observe the sample over long periods and atmospheric control is relatively easy to achieve"--Introduction, leaves 2-3.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive critical survey of the microstructural characteristics of liquid metals which determine properties of viscosity, surface tension, density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, diffusion, and velocity of sound transmission. The experimental techniques used to obtain these data are also reviewed. The result is a valuable set of correlations and reference data which enable the reader to understand the basic phenomena underlying the properties of liquid metals. As such, the book will be invaluable for metallurgists and materials engineers working in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physico-Chemical Analysis of Molten Electrolytes includes selected topics on the measurement and evaluation of physico-chemical properties of molten electrolytes. It describes the features, properties, and experimental measurement of different physico-chemical properties of molten salt systems used as electrolytes for different metal production, metallic layer deposition, as a medium for reactions in molten salts. The physico-chemical properties such as phase equilibria, density (molar volume), enthalpy (calorimetry), surface tension, vapor pressure, electrical conductivity, viscosity, etc. are the most important parameters of electrolytes needed for technological use. For each property the theoretical background, experimental techniques, as well as examples of the latest knowledge and the processing of most important salt systems will be given. The aim of Physico-Chemical Analysis of Molten Electrolytes is not only to present the state of the art on different properties of molten salts systems and their measurement, but also to present the possibilities of modeling molten salt systems, to be able to forecast the properties of an electrolyte mixture from the properties of the pure components in order to avoid experimentally demanding, and in most cases also expensive measurements. This book fills a substantial gap in this field of science. Also documententing the latest research in molten salts chemistry and brings new results and new insights into the study of molten salts systems using the results of X-ray diffraction and XAFS methods, Raman spectroscopy, and NMR measurements. * This book fills a substantial gap in this field of science* Serves as a invaluable reference for all people working in the field of molten salts chemistry* Describes fundamentals of the various properties of molten electrolytes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process metallurgy provides academics with the fundamentals of the manufacturing of metallic materials, from raw materials into finished parts or products. Coverage is divided into three volumes, entitled Process Fundamentals, encompassing process fundamentals, extractive and refining processes, and metallurgical process phenomena; Processing Phenomena, encompassing ferrous processing; non-ferrous processing; and refractory, reactive and aqueous processing of metals; and Industrial Processes, encompassing process modeling and computational tools, energy optimization, environmental aspects and industrial design. The work distils 400+ years combined academic experience from the principal editor and multidisciplinary 14-member editorial advisory board, providing the 2,608-page work with a seal of quality. The volumes will function as the process counterpart to Robert Cahn and Peter Haasen’s famous reference family, Physical Metallurgy (1996)--which excluded process metallurgy from consideration and which is currently undergoing a major revision under the editorship of David Laughlin and Kazuhiro Hono (publishing 2014). Nevertheless, process and extractive metallurgy are fields within their own right, and this work will be of interest to libraries supporting courses in the process area. Synthesizes the most pertinent contemporary developments within process metallurgy so scientists have authoritative information at their fingertips Replaces existing articles and monographs with a single complete solution, saving time for busy scientists Helps metallurgists to predict changes and consequences and create or modify whatever process is deployed
