Book Synopsis Knots and Surfaces by : N. D. Gilbert
Download or read book Knots and Surfaces written by N. D. Gilbert and published by Oxford University Press, UK. This book was released on 1994-12-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely up-to-date, illustrated throughout, and written in an accessible style, Knots and Surfaces is an account of the mathematical theory of knots and its interaction with related fields. This is an area of intense research activity, and this text provides the advanced undergraduate with a superb introduction to this exciting field. Beginning with a simple diagrammatic approach, the book proceeds through recent advances to areas of current research. Topics including topological spaces, surfaces, the fundamental group, graphs, free groups, and group presentations combine to form a coherent and highly developed theory with which to explore and explain the accessible and intuitive problems of knots and surfaces. - ;The main theme of this book is the mathematical theory of knots and its interaction with the theory of surfaces and of group presentations. Beginning with a simple diagrammatic approach to the study of knots, reflecting the artistic and geometric appeal of interlaced forms, Knots and Surfaces takes the reader through recent advances in our understanding to areas of current research. Topics included are straightforward introductions to topological spaces, surfaces, the fundamental group, graphs, free groups, and group presentations. These topics combine into a coherent and highly developed theory to explore and explain the accessible and intuitive problems of knots and surfaces. Both as an introduction to several areas of prime importance to the development of pure mathematics today, and as an account of pure mathematics in action in an unusual context, this book presents novel challenges to students and other interested readers. -

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, which may be used as a self-contained text for a beginning course, Professor Lefschetz aims to give the reader a concrete working knowledge of the central concepts of modern combinatorial topology: complexes, homology groups, mappings in spheres, homotopy, transformations and their fixed points, manifolds and duality theorems. Each chapter ends with a group of problems. Originally published in 1949. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Synopsis Explorations in Topology by : David Gay
Download or read book Explorations in Topology written by David Gay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations in Topology, Second Edition, provides students a rich experience with low-dimensional topology (map coloring, surfaces, and knots), enhances their geometrical and topological intuition, empowers them with new approaches to solving problems, and provides them with experiences that will help them make sense of future, more formal topology courses. The book's innovative story-line style models the problem-solving process, presents the development of concepts in a natural way, and engages students in meaningful encounters with the material. The updated end-of-chapter investigations provide opportunities to work on many open-ended, non-routine problems and, through a modified "Moore method," to make conjectures from which theorems emerge. The revised end-of-chapter notes provide historical background to the chapter's ideas, introduce standard terminology, and make connections with mainstream mathematics. The final chapter of projects provides ideas for continued research. Explorations in Topology, Second Edition, enhances upper division courses and is a valuable reference for all levels of students and researchers working in topology. - Students begin to solve substantial problems from the start - Ideas unfold through the context of a storyline, and students become actively involved - The text models the problem-solving process, presents the development of concepts in a natural way, and helps the reader engage with the material
Book Synopsis Hydrogeologic and Hydrochemical Framework, South-Central Great Basin, Nevada-California by : Isaac Judah Winograd
Download or read book Hydrogeologic and Hydrochemical Framework, South-Central Great Basin, Nevada-California written by Isaac Judah Winograd and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purposes of this investigation were to: define the hydraulic character and subsurface distribution of the major aquifers and aquitards; identify and describe the principal areas of recharge to and discharge from the major aquifers; and determine the rate and the direction of ground-water movement within the major aquifers and aquitards. Of these objectives, the third was of prime importance for an evaluation of the rate of movement of various radionuclides from the vicinity of an underground nuclear detonation. The accuracy of the velocity estimates, however, rested heavily upon the other two study objectives. The Nevada Test Site occupies a small part of two ground-water basins - the Ash Meadows and the Oasis Valley-Fortymile Canyon basins. Consequently, the objectives are discussed for a region several times the size of the test site.

Book Synopsis METAL CASTING AND JOINING by : K. C. JOHN
Download or read book METAL CASTING AND JOINING written by K. C. JOHN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the undergraduate students of mechanical engineering and allied branches, this book serves as a bridge between the study of the basic processes and their application in production industries. This book covers two similar fundamental processes—foundry and welding—in a single volume. The chapters of the book are grouped in seven modules. A separate module is devoted to introduce the preliminaries of the two areas namely casting and joining processes. Miscellaneous welding and allied processes, including the modern methods and thermal cutting, conventional sand mould casting, special and modern casting methods, conventional metal joining processes and theory of solidification of metal, its metallurgy, defects in castings and casting design procedure are covered in the book. The theory of each process is explained with the help of simple line sketches which can be easily reproduced by a student at the time of examination. Enough worked out examples and problems are given for practice, especially in the design areas. At the end of each chapter, sufficient number of review questions are given as exercise.
