Book excerpt: This document reports the progress the authors have made in support of their proposal to generate well-characterized, well-ordered organic surfaces and to impinge upon the array of oriented organic molecules a well-collimated beam of radical atoms at a well-defined angle of incidence. Using the intensity of helium atom diffraction from the organic surface as a measure of the number of unreacted molecules at the surface, the authors will measure the rate of the reaction. They will then vary the angle of incidence of the reactive atom beam and repeat the measurement. In this manner they plan to map out the reactivity of the molecules on the surface as a function of the angle of incidence of the reactive moiety. To carry out this experiment requires that two fields of research be brought together: (1) molecular beam technology and (2) the science/art of growing well-ordered organic surfaces. The first half of this report describes recent helium diffraction results from molecular beam deposited organic monolayers (structural layer characterization work). The second half reports progress in constructing and characterizing the reactive atom (oxygen) beam source.

Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials play a vital role in almost all aspects of science and technology in the 21st century. The materials include nanoparticles, nanofilms, biological membranes etc. whose physicochemical properties are size-dependent. Thin films have wide range of applications in various branches of science. One of the efficient methods to form miniaturized structures for device applications is to fabricate nanostructured films on different substrates. Surfactant assembly on metallic and non-metallic surfaces based on self assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett technique offers a unique way to form thin films at molecular levels. The process of formation of unimolecular assemblies gives the flexibility of tuning the properties of underlying substrates for various applications including wetting characteristics, lubrication, passivation, mimicking biological phenomena etc. Towards this direction, self assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold and silver surfaces have been studied comprehensively for the past two decades. The reported literature on short chain length thiol-based monolayers is however, limited since the formation using conventional methods yield poor quality monolayers. The short chain length monolayers are useful in various applications like tribology, layer-by-layer assemblies, biosensors etc. Hence, it is essential to reproducibly form SAMs of various chain lengths and understand their properties. The present study is related to the formation of SAMs of alkanethiols and diselenides on gold and silver surfaces to form ordered and well-oriented monolayers. Monolayers of varying chain lengths (CH3(CH2)nSH where n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15) have been formed on gold and silver surfaces using different methods, (1) adsorption from neat thiols; (2) adsorption under electrochemical control and (3) adsorption from alcoholic solutions of the thiols. The characteristics features of the SAMs have been followed based on three different aspects, (i) structure and.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the future, many modern materials will be increasingly based on the assembly of preformed molecular entities. Their structural characteristics and functional prop- ties will be programmed at the molecular level and their formation as a completed entity will be achieved by self-assembly processes. This in essence is a bottom-up approach and its success will require a deep understanding not only of the chemistry of intermolecular interactions and associations but also of self-assembly processes in the condensed phase. Among various interesting innovations brought about by the development of supramolecular chemistry, supramolecular synthesis is a part- ularly powerful approach for the design and generation of molecular architectures displaying both structural and functional complexity. The combination of mol- ular synthesis (which allows chemists to design and prepare extremely sophis- cated biotic and abiotic molecules through the interconnection of atoms or group of atoms by strong covalent bonds) and supramolecular synthesis (which orch- trates the association of molecules by recognition processes through the use of weak and reversible interactions) opens up endless structural and functional possibilities. Following the perceptive observation by Dunitz that "A crystal is, in a sense, the supramolecule par excellence", molecular crystals may be seen as in'nite periodic architectures resulting from the interconnection of building blocks or tectons ca- ble of self-assembling through speci'c recognising events.

Book excerpt: The past fifteen years have seen a revolution in the field of stereochemistry, with breakthrough analytical techniques in enantiomeric separation profoundly affecting drug development and use. This practical reference written by leading researchers focuses on the important roles chirality and stereoisomerism play in drug development efforts--presenting for the first time a comprehensive overview of this rapidly evolving area of pharmacological research. The book explores analytical, pharmacological, and regulatory topics in dealing with the theory and practice of stereochemistry in the pharmaceutical industry today. This exciting, broad-appeal treatment extends from the analytical viewpoint in enantiomeric separation to the regulatory issues involved in the "racemate-versus-enantiomer" debate. The authors include numerous examples and case studies, and integrate material from a wide range of studies, publications, and workshops. The introductory chapters outline the pharmacological effects of stereochemistry, cover stereochemistry in drug metabolism, and discuss problems inherent in the duality of enantiomers--chemically identical yet spatially different molecules. Contributions on the specific aspects of chirality and drug activity explore the toxicological effects of stereoselectivity, illustrate how an understanding of the stereochemical composition of certain drugs can help avoid problems, and offer tips on new clinical applications for existing drugs. A full chapter is devoted to research opportunities in the development of new chirally pure drugs. Other practical research topics range from the preparation of chirally pure compounds to the analytical determination of stereochemical composition, to applications of circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Regulatory issues concerning the development and approval of stereoisomeric drugs are discussed in the final chapters. This section offers an international perspective as well as a historical review of the ongoing debate surrounding regulatory guidelines. Impact of Stereochemistry on Drug Development and Use is an essential reference for medicinal and analytical chemists, pharmacologists, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic scientists, and personnel of regulatory agencies. It is also a useful text for graduate students in stereochemistry, and for anyone who wants to keep up with the swift pace of change in this dynamic field. IMPACT OF STEREOCHEMISTRY ON DRUG DEVELOPMENT AND USE Twenty-three expert contributions on the "stereochemical revolution" of the last fifteen years--covering analytical, pharmacological, and regulatory topics--show that "drug development can no longer occur without consideration of drug stereochemistry." "We have...come full circle and stand alongside Pasteur in amazement of nature's duality, symmetry and dissymmetry, and its chemical and pharmacological consequences."--from the Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry was at one time completely described in terms of collision theo ry, in which one molecule collided with another, sometimes producing reac tion. Then came the realization that enzymes which are highly efficient ca talysts, work by way of prior complexation, often stereospecific, which is then followed by chemical reaction. Thus, systems that exhibit "host-guest" relationships, i.e., that show complexing are being looked at an ever in creasing frequency. The cyclodextrins are the first and probably the most important example of compounds that exhibits complex formation. This is a book about the cyclodextrins. There are of course other compounds that exhibit "host-guest" relationships and thus bind other organic molecules, but so far they have not achieved the importance of the cyclodextrins. By their name it is obvious that cyclodextrins are cyclic compounds. The complexes that they form are therefore cyclic inclusion complexes. Because the complexes are cyclic in nature, complexation can be very strong, as op posed to 1t-complex, electrostatic, or apolar complexes in which complex formation is two-dimensional rather than three-dimensional. Cyclodextrins turn out to be excellent models of enzymes. This is proba bly not fortuitous because they were first sought since it was discovered that the principal binding in the enzyme chymotrypsin was a cyclic inclusion complex. Cyclodextrins can do more than form cyclic inclusion complexes, they can catalyze as well. But catalysis always occurs after complex formation.

Book excerpt: Nanocarbon chemistry and physics is a fast-developing, broad research area – the Nobel prizes in 1996 and 2010 awarded to two key discoveries in the field, and several other nanocarbon achievements of comparable importance. Owing to this rapid growth, the nanocarbon landscape fundamentally changes every few years, creating a need to survey the field on a regular basis to update the books that have become incomplete or even obsolete. As such, this book focuses on fullerenes and metallofullerenes and also on the related areas of nanotubes and graphenes. All the covered research topics provide important fundamental knowledge for the natural sciences, but also for applications in molecular electronics, superconductivity, catalysis, photovoltaics and medical diagnostics. The current nanocarbon research activities have particularly high application potential in the conversion of solar energy, future molecular memories, non-conventional materials for optoelectronics, and new treatments for civilization diseases. Offering a truly up-to-date critical survey of nanocarbon science, its concepts and highlights, it follows the concept of a handbook: it addresses key topics systematically, from historical background, methodological aspects, current important issues, and application potential, all supplied with extensive referencing. With individual chapters written by leading experts with extensive research experience, it is a comprehensive reference resource for graduate students and active researchers alike.
