Book excerpt: Computer vision is the science and technology of making machines that see. It is concerned with the theory, design and implementation of algorithms that can automatically process visual data to recognize objects, track and recover their shape and spatial layout. The International Computer Vision Summer School - ICVSS was established in 2007 to provide both an objective and clear overview and an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art research in Computer Vision. The courses are delivered by world renowned experts in the field, from both academia and industry, and cover both theoretical and practical aspects of real Computer Vision problems. The school is organized every year by University of Cambridge (Computer Vision and Robotics Group) and University of Catania (Image Processing Lab). Different topics are covered each year. A summary of the past Computer Vision Summer Schools can be found at: http://www.dmi.unict.it/icvss This edited volume contains a selection of articles covering some of the talks and tutorials held during the first two editions of the school on topics such as Recognition, Registration and Reconstruction. The chapters provide an in-depth overview of these challenging areas with key references to the existing literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest advances in photometric 3D reconstruction. It provides the reader with an overview of the state of the art in the field, and of the latest research into both the theoretical foundations of photometric 3D reconstruction and its practical application in several fields (including security, medicine, cultural heritage and archiving, and engineering). These techniques play a crucial role within such emerging technologies as 3D printing, since they permit the direct conversion of an image into a solid object. The book covers both theoretical analysis and real-world applications, highlighting the importance of deepening interdisciplinary skills, and as such will be of interest to both academic researchers and practitioners from the computer vision and mathematical 3D modeling communities, as well as engineers involved in 3D printing. No prior background is required beyond a general knowledge of classical computer vision models, numerical methods for optimization, and partial differential equations.

Photometric stereo is a practical technique for determining an object's shape and surface reflectance properties at a distance. The implementation proposes the use of three images of an object, recorded from the same viewpoint but with different illumination. The first algorithm employs the Fourier transform method to solve the minimization problem. The gradient data is obtained by incorporating photometric stereo method on image triplets. The Fourier transform of the unknown surface is then expressed as a function of the Fourier transform of the gradients. The relative depth values are then obtained by applying an inverse Fourier transform of the function. The second algorithm is based on iterative reconstruction which minimizes the cost function by gradient descent and annealing. Both these algorithms are implemented to reconstruct both real and synthetic surfaces and the results are compared. It is also shown that better reconstruction results are obtained by adopting the second algorithm in the presence of discontinuities in the image. Noise sensitivity of the frequency-domain method is also evaluated. An experimental setup to obtain real world images is also presented.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This report describes a method for recovering three- dimensional shape of an object from two or more two-dimensional color images of the object. The illumination geometry is different in each image, hence the method is called color photometric stereo. At each visible point on the surface, each image imposes a constraint on the possible surface orientations, and if the constraints are sufficiently strong, the orientation can be determined. Given the orientation at many points of the surface, the three-dimensional shape of the object can be determined. Previously, little work has been done in the use of color for photometric stereo. Only for dielectric materials has this combination been used. The main contribution of this report is to extend the use to other types of materials such as composite materials and metals. The approach used to derive the surface orientation from a color is numerical, therefore the reflection model does not have to be analytically invertible. The reflection models that can be used with color photometric stereo are for example the Lambertian, Phong, and Torrance-Sparrow models. The advantage of using color images rather than grey-scale images is two-fold: At each pixel, there are more constraints on the possible orientation, and hence fewer images of the same object are necessary to recover the shape. Also, the noise-sensitivity will be less (assuming that random noise in the three color components will be independent). The method has been tested on both artificial and real images of composite surfaces."

Book excerpt: Understanding how the shape of a three dimensional object may be recovered from shading in a two-dimensional image of the object is one of the most important - and still unresolved - problems in machine vision. Although this important subfield is now in its second decade, this book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of shape from shading. It brings together all of the seminal papers on the subject, shows how recent work relates to more traditional approaches, and provides a comprehensive annotated bibliography. The book's 17 chapters cover: Surface Descriptions from Stereo and Shading. Shape and Source from Shading. The Eikonal Equation: some Results Applicable to Computer Vision. A Method for Enforcing Integrability in Shape from Shading Algorithms. Obtaining Shape from Shading Information. The Variational Approach to Shape from Shading. Calculating the Reflectance Map. Numerical Shape from Shading and Occluding Boundaries. Photometric Invariants Related to Solid Shape. Improved Methods of Estimating Shape from Shading Using the Light Source Coordinate System. A Provably Convergent Algorithm for Shape from Shading. Recovering Three Dimensional Shape from a Single Image of Curved Objects. Perception of Solid Shape from Shading. Local Shading Analysis Pentland. Radarclinometry for the Venus Radar Mapper. Photometric Method for Determining Surface Orientation from Multiple Images. Berthold K. P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 edition of the European Conference on Computer Vision was held in Heraklion, Crete. The call for papers attracted an absolute record of 1,174 submissions. We describe here the selection of the accepted papers: ? Thirty-eight area chairs were selected coming from Europe (18), USA and Canada (16), and Asia (4). Their selection was based on the following criteria: (1) Researchers who had served at least two times as Area Chairs within the past two years at major vision conferences were excluded; (2) Researchers who served as Area Chairs at the 2010 Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition were also excluded (exception: ECCV 2012 Program Chairs); (3) Minimization of overlap introduced by Area Chairs being former student and advisors; (4) 20% of the Area Chairs had never served before in a major conference; (5) The Area Chair selection process made all possible efforts to achieve a reasonable geographic distribution between countries, thematic areas and trends in computer vision. ? Each Area Chair was assigned by the Program Chairs between 28–32 papers. Based on paper content, the Area Chair recommended up to seven potential reviewers per paper. Such assignment was made using all reviewers in the database including the conflicting ones. The Program Chairs manually entered the missing conflict domains of approximately 300 reviewers. Based on the recommendation of the Area Chairs, three reviewers were selected per paper (with at least one being of the top three suggestions), with 99.
