Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnets of iron, cobalt and iron-cobalt particles were made with different matrix materials. Magnets pressed from a gel of magnetic particles and mercury were used to evaluate the progress of the various phases of the process. These magnets are commonly referred to as ''mercury matrix'' magnets. In order to eliminate the mercury these magnets were distilled at high temperatures under a vacuum. This resulted in the production of porous blocks of fine particles which were either vacuum impregnated with resins or crushed, mixed with binder and repressed. Lead was added to the heat treated gel before pressing. These magnets were distilled, crushed and repressed. Magnets were made by superficially oxidizing submicron particles of iron-cobalt. Gross structure in fine particle magnets was revealed by electron micrographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manganese-aluminum alloys with 68-73% Mn were developed for permanent magnet material. Best magnetic properties were obtained in 71% Mn alloys. Maximum energy product was 4.0 x 10 to the 6th power GOe, reached by homogenization, controlled quenching, reducing area 86% by swaging in jackets, and annealing. Process parameters were studied to fine the optima for the brittle alloy. Deformation of the alloy produces a preferred magnetic axis and raises coercive force. Swaging was best, but deforming by turning cast bars into chips on a lathe gave the best ''particle'' magnets and was easiest. A review of the crystal and magnetic structures leads to the deduction that dislocation lines involve Mn atoms arranged antiferromagnetically which subdivide larger ferromagnetic regions. The magnetic saturation is not reached in practical magnetizing field. The magnetic induction decreases with increasing temperatures to Curie point.

Book excerpt: Methods of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are increasingly applied in engineering sciences. The book summarizes research in the field of chemical and process engineering performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Fundamentals of the methods are exposed for readers with an engineering background. Applications cover the fields of mechanical process engineering (filtration, solid-liquid separation, powder mixing, rheometry), chemical process engineering (trickle-bed reactor, ceramic sponges), bioprocess engineering (biofilm growth), and food process engineering (microwave heating, emulsions). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as well as low-field NMR are covered with notes on hardware. Emphasis is placed on quantitative data analysis and image processing.

Book excerpt: Interest in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is continuously increasing worldwide, especially with the increased use of renewable energy and the electrification of transports. This book contains the successful submissions of fifteen papers to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of “Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines”. The focus is on permanent magnet synchronous machines and the electrical systems they are connected to. The presented work represents a wide range of areas. Studies of control systems, both for permanent magnet synchronous machines and for brushless DC motors, are presented and experimentally verified. Design studies of generators for wind power, wave power and hydro power are presented. Finite element method simulations and analytical design methods are used. The presented studies represent several of the different research fields on permanent magnet machines and electric drives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the physics, instrumentation and analytical methods of secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) in relation to solid surfaces. It describes modern models of secondary ion formation and the factors influencing sensitivity of measurements and the range of applications. All the main parts of SIMS instruments are discussed in detail. Emphasising practical applications the book also considers the methods and analytical procedures for constitutional analysis of solids --- including metals, semiconductors, organic and biological samples. Methods of depth profiling, spatially multidimensional analysis and study of processes at the surface, such as adsorption, catalysis and oxidation, are given along with the application of SIMS in combination with other methods of surface analysis.
