Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research provides qualitative evidence that an improved surface finish can increase the surface fatigue lives of gears. To quantify the influence of surface roughness on life, a set of AISI 9310 steel gears was provided with a near-mirror finish by superfinishing. The effects of the superfinishing on the quality of the gear tooth surfaces were determined using data from metrology, profilometry, and interferometric microscope inspections. The superfinishing reduced the roughness average by about a factor of 5. The superfinished gears were subjected to surface fatigue testing at 1.71-GPa (248-ksi) Hertz contact stress, and the data were compared with the NASA Glenn gear fatigue data base. The lives of gears with superfinished teeth were about four times greater compared with the lives of gears with ground teeth but with otherwise similar quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers very important issues, not only scientific in nature but, ultimately, for industry and the economy. Wear and deterioration of surface properties during operation is a natural and unavoidable phenomenon. However, minimizing the degree of wear is of great importance for the entire economy, as illustrated by the example of the US economy, for which the loss of natural resources as a direct cause of friction and wear exceeds 6% of the Gross National Product. This book showcases the valuable knowledge revealed from both theoretical and practical research results in the field of advanced technologies of coatings and surface modification, as well as wear and tribological characteristics of advanced materials and surface layers. Therefore, it is hoped that this book will be a valuable resource and helpful tool for scientists, engineers, and students in the field of surface engineering, materials science, and manufacturing engineering.

Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture is intended for gear metallurgists and materials specialists, manufacturing engineers, lubrication technologists, and analysts concerned with gear failures who seek a better understanding of gear performance and gear life. This volume complements other gear texts that emphasize the design, geometry, and theory of gears. The coverage begins with an overview of the various types of gears used, important gear terminology, applied stresses and strength requirements associated with gears, and lubrication and wear. This is followed by in-depth treatment of metallic (ferrous and nonferrous alloys) and plastic gear materials. Emphasis is on the properties of carburized steels, the material of choice for high-performance power transmission gearing.

Book excerpt: The Weibull distribution has been widely adopted for the statistical description and inference of fatigue data. This document provides user instructions, examples, and verification for software to analyze gear fatigue test data. The software was developed presuming the data are adequately modeled using a two-parameter Weibull distribution. The calculations are based on likelihood methods, and the approach taken is valid for data that include type I censoring. The software was verified by reproducing results published by others.

Book excerpt: Gearing technology in its modern form has a history of only 100 years. However, the earliest form of gearing can probably be traced back to fourth century B.C. Greece. This publication draws together current gear practice and integrates it with recent advances in the technology. The history of gearing is reviewed briefly in the 'Introduction.' Subsequent sections describe types of gearing and their geometry, processing, and manufacture. Both conventional and more recent methods of determining gear stress and deflections are considered. The subjects of life prediction and lubrication are additions to the literature, not having been treated before. New and more complete methods of power loss prediction as well as an optimum design of spur gear meshes are described. Conventional and new types of power transmission system are presented. Book excerpt: Shot peening has been proved to be a powerful instrument in enhancing the resistance of materials to various kinds of stress-induced damage, particularly against damage due to cyclic loading (fatigue) in air or in aggressive environments. As shot peening can be used for a wide variety of structural components irrespective of shape and dimensions, the number of shot peening applications in many industrial branches is increasing. The use of peen forming as a technique to form large metal parts into complicated shapes is also increasing, particularly in the aerospace industry. The Conference covers all aspects of the Science, Technology and Application of Shot Peening, and was intended to attract users, manufacturers as well as scientists working in the field of "Materials Treatment by Shot Peening". Emphasis was put on the current state of knowledge and research. This book offers scientists and engineers an unique opportunity to update their knowledge on shot peening.
