Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Chemistry of Carbon Capture: Climate Change Aspects provides comprehensive and up-to-date literature on carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology and delineates the surface chemistry of this process. Mankind is dependent on energy from gas, oil, coal, atomic energy, and various other sources. In all fossil fuel combustion processes, carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced (ca. 25 Gt/year). In the past few decades, we have observed a constant increase in CO2 content in the air (currently ca. 400 ppm [0.04%]). This book discusses the technology related to carbon (i.e., CO2) capture and sequestration (CCS) from fossil fuel energy plants, which is considered an important means of CO2 control. It also covers the adsorption/absorption processes of CO2 on solids and similar procedures to help address growing climate change concerns.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the chemistry of CO2 in relation to surface interactions and photocatalytic transformation by UV radiation. The first part deals with the modelling of an anatase surface, its interaction with CO2, and the spontaneous exchange of oxygen atoms between the gas and solid phases. The book then naturally transitions to the photocatalytic reduction of CO2, achieved by adding UV radiation and traces of water to the experimental system, to produce methane and CO. This photocatalytic reduction is explained in detail and the implications for planetary chemistry (specifically concerning Mars), as well as Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and global warming, are discussed.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is significant interest in methods to aid in the removal of carbon dioxide from our environment. The methods range from sequestration to catalytic transformations. In sequestration, CO2 is collected from emission sources, and may be stored in a variety of materials including geological formations. Catalytic research often involves the transformation of CO2 to another compound such as methane. The majority of these latter studies focus on the use of photocatalysis for the conversion of CO2. An alternative method, discussed in this dissertation, is to examine the surface chemistry for the adsorption and thermal reduction of carbon dioxide with magnesium oxide and titanium oxide surfaces. We are also interested in gaining a better understanding of the refractory nature of CO2. The overall goal of these studies is to elucidate the surface reaction mechanism for the reaction of carbon dioxide on metal oxide surfaces with and without UV light. We combine the use of X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies to examine the surface chemistry of CO2. First, carbon dioxide is exposed to the heated metal oxide surface and the surface atomic concentrations are measured after reaction. The substrate temperature and CO2 exposure are varied in the experiment. Similar studies are also performed in the presence of UV light to gain a better understanding of photocatalysis. The results from these experiments will be discussed, as well as, the direction of future studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels still need to meet the growing demand of global economic development, yet they are often considered as one of the main sources of the CO2 release in the atmosphere. CO2, which is the primary greenhouse gas (GHG), is periodically exchanged among the land surface, ocean, and atmosphere where various creatures absorb and produce it daily. However, the balanced processes of producing and consuming the CO2 by nature are unfortunately faced by the anthropogenic release of CO2. Decreasing the emissions of these greenhouse gases is becoming more urgent. Therefore, carbon sequestration and storage (CSS) of CO2, its utilization in oil recovery, as well as its conversion into fuels and chemicals emerge as active options and potential strategies to mitigate CO2 emissions and climate change, energy crises, and challenges in the storage of energy.

Book excerpt: Corrosion processes and the rates of the individual electrode reactions in carbon dioxide containing solutions are well known to be affected by solution composition and hydrodynamics. There are many different mechanistic explanations for the observed, from rotating-disk studies, cathodic current-potential-rotation speed relationships, most of which obtain the observed currents by the simple addition of two or more currents due to processes (for example, chemical reactions and diffusion) that are considered to act independently. The validity of this is not clear, since many of the species contributing interact in the boundary layer.
