Book excerpt: A thorough knowledge of adherend surfaces is necessary to adequately evaluate adhesive bond joint performance. Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS), SCanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the surface topography (roughness, selective etching) composition (relative concentration of alloyed element on surface, contaminated overlayer ...) chemical state (titanium or alloy surface oxide, oxy-fluoride ...) and oxide thickness of different chemically treated titanium alloys. Seven alloys and the metal were conditioned with seven different chemical treatments. Data from each treated alloy has been compiled to show physical and chemical effects of each treatment on each alloy. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light alloys (aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys) are gaining increasing interest in the scientific and technological community in many different application fields, from automotive to medicine, thanks to their light weight coupled with interesting mechanical properties. The functional performances of light alloys can be significantly affected by their surface properties; in fact, the surface can be considered as the “visiting card” of the material for its working environment (e.g., it can drive the biological response upon implantation for titanium alloys intended for biomedical implants or it can affect the joining ability of aluminum and magnesium alloys) as well as for its further material working steps (e.g., coatings). Surface engineering is a versatile tool for the modification of material surfaces in order to tailor and improve their functional properties. The aim of the present Special Issue is to present the latest development in this field through research and review papers. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to, surface engineering of light alloys for biomedical applications, surface engineering of light alloys for joining and coatings applications, surface engineering of light alloys for corrosion protection, and surface engineering of light alloys for antibacterial/antifouling purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloys, due to unique physical and chemical properties (mainly high relative strength combined with very good corrosion resistance), are considered as an important structural metallic material used in hi-tech industries (e.g. aerospace, space technology). This book provides information on new manufacturing and processing methods of single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The eight chapters of this book are distributed over four sections. The first section (Introduction) indicates the main factors determining application areas of titanium and its alloys. The second section (Manufacturing, two chapters) concerns modern production methods for titanium and its alloys. The third section (Thermomechanical and surface treatment, three chapters) covers problems of thermomechanical processing and surface treatment used for single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of chemical treatments on surfaces of Ti8Al-1Mo-1Sn and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al were characterized with Auger electron spectroscopy, ion scattering spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of particular treatments were not always the same for each alloy. In all cases the original surface oxide was replaced with a new one containing traces of elemental species common to a particular treatment. In most cases the oxide formed was identified as TiO2. The oxide formed on Ti-8Al-1Mo-1Sn by a fluorophosphate treatment was an oxyfluoride of titanium. (Author).

The book organizes and processes the findings from over 2,000 published articles and studies into a coherent and easily accessible volume, deftly weaving together older and newer technologies to give a clear overview. Bridging the gap between medical/dental and engineering/technology areas, the book covers material classification, fabrication and modification, as well as applications and biological reactions to titanium implants. The author, with extensive work in academics and industry, helps medical practitioners and students answer many practical questions, including: What is titanium? What type of titanium materials should I use in this case? How can I fabricate my design using titanium? Are there any alternative materials or methods? In the second edition, macro-, micro-, and nano-texturing of titanium surfaces, tissue engineering-related materials including scaffolds, and functionally graded materials and structures are extensively included and analyzed. Provides quick access to the primary literature in this field Up-to-date information on nanoscience and nanotechnology developments Helps answer questions about the most appropriate materials to use and when to use them
